And....

Dynamic Weather added to engine *hinting at Forza Motorsport 7? :)

"But the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Specs are one thing, but Microsoft is promising that both 900p and 1080p Xbox One games should be able to run at native 4K on Project Scorpio. We needed to see validation of this, meaning we needed to see software - a tough call so many months out from release.

Regardless, Microsoft duly obliged, showing us a ForzaTech demonstration with the Xbox One engine operating at native 4K, at a locked 60fps. As you can see in the screenshot above, GPU utilisation is remarkably low at just 60-70 per cent (you can grab a full 4K PNG version of the above shot here) - but we should stress that this is basically an Xbox One port, not representative of the full quality we'll see in final software.

"This is us. This is ForzaTech running 60 frames a second, 4K," says Turn 10 Studio Software Architect, Chris Tector. "We're still running with settings that we would have used in Forza 6... but this is also including 4K content... we've got authored assets for this set of the models, cars, tracks everything. We pushed it through and made sure the 4K textures were flowing through. We've got them all there at the right resolutions and they're not giving us enough of a bandwidth hit to offset that. If we drop back to when we originally ran and we didn't have 4K assets, it was maybe one per cent different. We were very much bound on a different point than memory bandwidth. It's been awesome and this is the point it's at."

The demo stacks up the maximum amount of cars and runs the full AI and physics simulations. It's a highly taxing stress test, used to enforce the strict budgets in Forza Motorsport to ensure the locked 60fps the series is famous for. The ForzaTech port to Scorpio took two days to complete and was fully performant from day one. In fact, the team can push ForzaTech to the equivalent of PC's ultra-level settings and we're still sitting at 88 per cent GPU utilisation; in terms of system utilisation, this is ballpark with Xbox One at 1080p on its default settings. Clearly this is just one game, but the point is that Scorpio doesn't just scale Xbox One engines to 4K. For the Forza engine at least, there's overhead, and plenty of it.

"The awesome part about the whole story [is] that we can spend all this time heading into the future," enthuses Tector. "Instead of saying, 'How are we going to wrestle to get the performance on this?' we're actually saying we can make this quality trade-off or this quality trade-off and spend that time iterating, heading towards much better image quality. So instead of stressing about getting to a final resolution or a final frame-rate, we can really drive it all into quality."

Of course, if you're going to show off a game on a new Xbox, choosing one of the most visually accomplished, well-optimised first-party engines we've ever tested is the way to go, but Microsoft is insistent that the results and scalability Turn 10 demoed to us is "not atypical". The fact that the studio got great results from Scorpio hardware so early perhaps also explains why Microsoft is ready to unveil the hardware to the users so far ahead of release. With everyone we met there's a genuine, infectious excitement and confidence about the new box. And the fact that the platform holder is willing to share so much so early also suggests that E3 2017 is going to be one to remember."

I couldn't even get 4K on my 980ti with the horizon demo.

And native 4K?

Damn impressive.

--ahh different games. Still, very nice!

In their tests the Xbox Scorpio outperformed the GTX 1070 at 4K Ultra settings. Good stuff.

Note: This is a closed system punching above its weight. This is to be expected and no it's not on the level of a 1080.

It is still incredibly impressive!

So impressive. Can't wait.

Scorpio is going to be *the* place to play multi format games moving forward. Or at least it should be.

Hmmm? I have a 980ti and I played the demo at 4k 30fps with stuff at max (Pretty sure it defaulted to that, not sure about MSAA). Not to mention that port still has issues. The Horizon Forzas are 30fps on Xbox, I better example would be Forza 6: Apex on PC. Though I expect Horizon 3 will be 4k on Scorpio easily.

Richard said in the Eurogamer YouTube video that that was base Xbox One settings in 4k, on ultra settings it was in the 80s GPU usage

Yes and only 2 days to port this onto Scorpio with a engine that isn't fully utilizing all the customization of the hardware :)

I don't wanna be super pessimistic all of the time but what would a screenshot of GPU utilization tell us about how powerful the system is? If this is a two day port job it could be unoptimized. It could be the tightest code in the world. But how the hell would that number tell us either?

This is saying 60fps with overhead too though! And I had dips/stuttering at 30fps too lol!

Pretty amazing.

My worry is that some developers are going to go overboard with extra rendering features and performance will suffer just as much as it does currently (I know forza is rather solid, but I mean in general)

Really can't wait for Scorpio. It seems like MS will be putting in some real effort with game updates to show off its true potential. I just hope they get better developer engagement from third parties than Pro has received. Most Pro patches seem pretty lazy.

Well, I mean, we're already at the point where some games are like basic performance expectations on PS4 Pro and kind of dodgy on PS4/XB1 regular, so that's almost assuredly where we're heading long term.

They ported ForzaTech to Scorpio in 2 days and this was the result, very impressive indeed - it's not even fully optimised for Scorpio. Bodes well!

Screenshot looks awesome but makes me sad. I can't afford a new 4k TV *and* a new receiver too.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to upgrade but it's not in the cards anytime soon

This is a Forza that's targeting 60fps on regular base Xbox ONE hardware though since it's based on Forza 6 tech, which is "technically" a different Forza series since Horizon aims for 30fps and is open world. You'd get similar results on your PC with Forza 6: Apex. Horizon 3 if it gets a Scorpio update will probably still be 30FPS at 4k.

It's still pretty impressive to see they have some overhead.

This is important to note. Its a 2 day port with ZERO optimisation, Turn10 were blown away apparently (i know they're first party so expected i guess).

I want to see what Playground Games can do for the next Horizon with this kind of power.

YEESSS!!!

Ahh, sorry, I messed up, completely forgot about Apex.

Was about to dump my pc

;)

It's pure wizardry that it is doing this so easily and it only took two days. I think it's safe to say that they had their shit together when designing this system.

no hotlinking please

I thought Richard said that they got the game running at 4K60 with 4K level assets, but I don't think it was ultra settings across the board. In fact I was pretty sure Richard noted in the 4K screenshot that the 4xAF could be increased to 16xAF due to the room to spare.

Very impressive, I wonder if Microsoft will win over any PC gamers with this tech.

No. And for the last time, this isn't marketed for hardcore PC owners. By next year, mid range rigs will be capable of this for PC. This is for console owners, especially Xbox One owners stuck with 4K tv's and a console that is 720p/900p/1080pr most of the time.

PC gamers will be won over in that Play Anywhere titles will most likely be Scorpio ports that will really shine. Imagine Scorpio Halo 6 being on PC.

It's worth noting that the Scorpio shot isn't just FM6. FM6's rainy tracks have full overcast whereas this one has sun shining through and a very FH3-looking sky. It also has a wet track but not wet cars, suggesting it's actually dynamic weather.
