New York Times said:
The White House on Tuesday accused the Russian government of engaging in a cover-up of the chemical weapons attack last week by Syrian forces that prompted American airstrikes, saying that United States intelligence and numerous contemporaneous reports confirmed that the Syrians used sarin gas on their own people.

In a declassified four-page report that details United States intelligence on the chemical weapons attack, the White House asserted that the Syrian and Russian governments have sought to confuse the world community about the assault through disinformation and “false narratives.”

Senior White House officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the government’s view, said Russia’s goal was to cover up Syrian regime culpability.

Following up on the leaked Intel reports from last week saying the same.

Still don't trust Trumps White House and Russia but at least they're not being so open about it?

Or is that bad?

I don't even know anymore

OK are you going to impose stricter sanctions on Russia or just posture a lot so that the "special" portion of America forgets about your campaigns suspected collusion with the country?

So much finger wagging. Our fucking Secretary of State just the other day said Russia has to look inside to see if interfering with our elections is going to get their desired outcome. Such a goddamned joke.

This is a deliberate distraction from the fbi invesigations into the trump administration.

I hate the Trump admin as much as anyone else, but why do people make such conclusive statements like this? Not everything is perfectly orchestrated, Russia has multiple arms and heads. The Trump administration can have dirty dealings while Russia still has interest in covering up Syria stuff. Both things are worth reporting on. Do we just ignore everything about Russia that doesn't align exactly with Trump stuff?

Edit: I guess the focus is on the White House making the allegation, not the allegation itself.

"Look how tough I am on Russia, you guys! So tough! There's no way I colluded with them to influence the election, huh? Huh, guys?"

Pee pee tape incoming.

White House also released background documentation on Syria using CW.

G7 fails to agree sanctions on Russia after 'chemical attack'

This is getting hard to keep up with. Just yesterday senior WH admins denied this reporting and Spicey even mentioned Russia explicitly as an ally we need to work with in Syria...

Is this horseshoe theory applied to diversionary tactics? The White House has gone so far around the bend in trying to distract from Russia that they came around to agree with the idea that Russia spreads disinformation to favor their allies and their own interests?

We're in full Adam Curtis mode with this recent Syria business. There are so many narratives flying around and so many theories about who's doing what for what reason that nobody knows what's really going on.

What are the chances this accusation was cleared with Russia before it went public?

Low. Trump's won the election and it's obvious his Russia stink is never going away, so those sanctions are staying. He has little to lose by doing this and painting Russia as his enemy, it only looks good.

I really am starting to think that and I feel so insane for it. This whole thing is so convenient at so little actual cost to anyone.

That's assuming the collusion with Russia ended on election day, though.

I would imagine Flynn/Manafort/Page have kept their heads down, they're under way too much scrutiny.

“If there was anything that Syria did, it was to validate the fact that there is no Russia tie,” Eric Trump told The Daily Telegraph during an interview at the family’s Trump Turnberry golf resort in Scotland.

Eric Trump to the rescue! Mug can't keep his mouth shut.

As for distractions, remember when the former attorney general was supposed to testify, and that Flynn had asked for immunity? That was over a week ago and since then nada.

Spicer - "Russia is our ally"

White House - "Russia is not our ally"

What the fuck is it?

I'm wondering if the leak last week was planned to soften the response to Trump's change of tone on Russia or if the leak forced Trump's hand in responding negatively to Russia.

Bannon's not in control anymore.

These are the effects. I'll be enjoying the view from here. (Waiting for Putin to drop the piss tape)

How would that work?

Seems more like grounds for introducing the possibility of additional ground forces in Syria.

Something like US ground troops deployed to Syria and then after some amount of time, both sides come together for cease fire/peace talks and one of the conditions being sanctions being lifted.

Sounds pretty out there which is why I put the tinfoil hat on

but then again, with this administration-who the fuck knows

I hate doing this but...

*Also puts on tinfoil hat*

Which would Russia prefer to be accused of:

A. Rigging the US election and controlling the President?

Or

B. Covering up a chemical attack in Syria?

*Removes tinfoil hat*

Ok I'm done now.

Just waiting to hear back from Putin on approved "sanctions".

Isn't the SoS traveling to Russia for meetings this week or was that cancelled? Seems odd considering this public back and forth over very serious charges like these.
