Prey Demo: Opening Hour Thread: Everything is Going to Be OK

The level design and story is interesting, though I don't like the 60s retro future theme or whatever. Does this have anything at all to do with the original Prey, though? Assuming it handles better on PC I might pick it up later on.

No. All new universe and story, but reusing name of old IP.

A few takeaways from the demo

Movement is extremely clunky. Simply interacting with objects is a pain. MKB may help with that. Seems like its an issue with the input lag. Movement is also really slow. Like... really slow. It can be brutal when you're getting tagged by 4-5 mimics

I like that they seem to be forcing you to use the environment. Like you'll have to set up plenty of traps with whatever items are around you since you die very fast even on normal.

Performance is likely going to be an issue. Anotha one.

I'm surprised at how negative the comments are. It has flaws, but I loved the general atmosphere. Half life 2 meets Bioshock.

My personal opinion from what I have seen so far of Prey, it does not deserve to be uttered in the same sentence as those 2 classics.

Nethertheless, I think it is a good game but it is nothing groundbreaking like they were. That Bioshock demo back in the day blew my mind

This game seems really fucking cool. I'm in love with the music most of all.
It's a bit janky in spots, but I've always been able to looks past that.

No review copies pre-release so X days after release.

I see. Well, I'll keep my eye on it for now and might even download the demo on PS4 even though I'd get it on PC. However there's zero show of the PC version ( well demo) and that's not a good sign.

I'm expecting the pc version to be unoptimised and feature patch after patch of patches. :)

I just have to run in here and say that I really loved the XB360 version of Prey. When I got my 360 the Prey demo was out but the full game was almost a year away. That demo was so amazing.. all of my friends and I were blown away. I hope this new version has feeeelz

Played a little over an hour and I do agree that the controls are clunky. I'm hoping that, and the annoyingly deafening soundtrack, will be fixed in the final game. The actual music is good, it's just so damn loud though ...

That all being said, I loved the atmosphere and the mystery of the world and the story. I'd definitely like to play this for those aspects alone, but I'm going to hold off on purchasing it until after reviews drop.

One of my favorite game mechanics writers, and Gaf regular, Doc isn't happy with the demo. It's worth noting he's a huge Arkane fan, having recently written this excellent Dishonored 2 piece for his site, so he has a lot of good-will for the studio.

Hopefully the demo isn't indicative of the rest of the experience.

The first half hour of Dishonored 2 was trash too, its not really any indication of the quality of the game at all.

So I'm sold. Didn't really get what this game was beyond the reveal trailer and I'm pretty stoked about its release.

I absolutely love games like this. Serious BioShock and Dead Space vibes so I'll be picking this up come May.

Sounds like they filled the game with shape shifting versions of the spiders from system shock 2.

And basically made a system shock game which I think most people wouldn't like anyway.

SS2 is complex, hard, unpredictable, SS1 is well a whole other beast.

But this whole thread deeply unsettles me but I have flashbacks to the numerous posts saying Dishonored 2 was a trash game compared to the first but when I played it, it was more like going from Thief 1 to Thief 2: The Metal Age, and was basically Thief: The After Years if you took Corvo's path instead of his Daughter's path.

If he's a gaffer, why would you post his tweets here? Let him post his opinion here if he wants to. We really should stop with bringing twitter stuff here.

Because I thought people would find his perspective interesting, as someone who is so passionate about Dishonored 2 yet feels very underwhelmed by Prey. I don't know how often he posts, I just know he's a member, and I wanted to highlight his recent Dishonored 2 article, which although the team behind Prey didn't work on, is still related in terms in design philosophies.

Frankly, not many are talking about the game on Twitter that it's one of the few Tweets that stood out.

I hate to be that guy but if the mimics annoy you because you can't hit them, get better. It's really not that difficult to hit them. What, do you want enemies to stand still and wait for you? I imagine that were designed that way because the game gives you multiple ways of dealing with them. If you're good, then just whack em. There's also the Gloo gun and the stun gun to stop them, and other enemies, in their tracks. Just learn the mechanics.

Be grateful I didn't actually say "git gud".

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Played more of the demo. Still really dig the exploration and atmosphere, creative ways to find places. But every time combat starts my enjoyment comes to a screeching halt. Enemies feel like bullet sponges while you feel made of paper. If I dont have a turret with me I dont even feel confident taking on a single humanoid enemy. Walked into IT saw 2 of them and waled right out. :/ Probably gonna wait for this to be $30 or less, hopefully by then a patch will fix the aiming issues I have with the game.

There is no "getting good" around the piss poor aiming in this game. Someone else in the thread mentioned the acceleration feels weird, so I know it isnt just me.

His perspective is interesting and I'll always be glad to hear it, but definitely not like this. A few tweets that go "this game is bad because its not like this other game which is good" are pretty worthless.

I hate that screech and then the deafening WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE music starts up the second a mimic spots you, and while its true you have little sound cues that a mimic is nearby, with my surround sound system I can't tell where the fuck the sound cue is coming from so I think its left of me, I slowly approach with my wrench out, and whoops the mimic was on my right I guess and now I just triggered it but I'm facing left and its on my side and yay it just attacked me and I'm slowly rotating to the right like a geriatric in a wheelchair and the little fucker has sucker punched me and bobbed to the left and now I'm just pissed, can't see shit because my screen is all wavy and shit, this goddamn soviet propoganda music is blaring at me like I'm at a North Korean military rally, and I just want to go have a nice cup of tea and maybe play some chess.

Anyways I was surprised to hear the Dishonored 2 team wasn't the one who did this game, its gotta share some of the artists though this portrait you can pick up at the start of the game looks like something straight up out of Dishonored 2

I ran through the demo earlier tonight (X1) and really enjoyed it. Cool atmosphere and presentation and I'm interested to see where the story goes. I definitely see myself picking it up in the future. Only thing holding me back is I'm trying to really limit my game purchases this year, but also having recently completed Deus Ex: MD I realized that I wasn't feeling up to repeating some of those similar gameplay systems just yet.

Those two Tweets are part of a larger chain. I didn't want to post the entire conversation here, which Is why I left a link to his thoughts.

Well I don't know about you but I've gotten good, even with the lag. Playing it without lag is even better. They're quite easy to hit. Good job the lag won't exist on any platform at launch.

Yeah I agree with you about the music. It's really weird how it shoots up in volume and stays playing far too long.

I quite like how Arkane have developed their own signature art style. Even with the difference in engines you can tell it's an Arkane game.

Anyone have a recommended level to set the music to in the settings menu?

:(

Also, yeah, the input lag coupled with Morgan's exceedingly slow movement is.... well it's a tough sell

It's almost like tweets are a bad medium for long form discussion and a person who has a gaf account can post them here if they want to, and they won't post them here if they don't want to.

does mick gordon just enforce really really weird rules about how his music is going to be heard in games so he fucks with the sound mixing?

I wrote DOOM's sound mixing issues due to id tech as Wolfenstein shared it also, but this is supposed to be cryengine? how are video games even made?

Bethesda PR got in touch with Forbes to address why there isn't a PC demo.

"Hope all is well and thanks for reaching out. We appreciate the enthusiasm in the PC community for Prey, and the interest in a PC demo. The team at Arkane has been fully focused on optimizing and finalizing the PC version of the game. We aim to deliver the best PC experience to our fans – and are hard at work to do just that."

So this is what we get instead of a space bounty hunter game, huh? I guess a day one patch can fix how poorly this game controls.

Translation:

"Remember how fucked up Dishonored 2 was on PC when we released it? Yeah, seriously, we have a ways to go before we're going to let anyone get hands on the PC version. We'll put out a PC demo a few months after release once we've had time to polish that version."

hi :D

Yeah, uh... I posted some video too.

If you've played Dead Island, this basically just has Dead Island's combat system. When you're fighting four evil headcrabs at once, you run out of stamina in like... seven swings? They take 3-4 successful hits to kill. It's not fun. You can use the GLOO gun to slow 'em down, but when fighting four at once, because they're fast, can shapeshift, and take a decent amount of damage to kill... just... ugh. I've been a bit concerned about the aliens from the start, because their designs are so bad, but I was hoping the game would be fun, and... it's not. I was expecting to like this more than Dishonored, because I prefer System Shock 2 to Thief.

This is a really bad System Shock successor based on what I played. I confided to a friend something I thought I'd never say, which was "they canceled Prey 2 for this?" I'm not even one of those super salty folks, but... this... is just really shoddy. It's Dead Island style combat. I don't understand how the creators of Dark Messiah and Dishonored could create such a garbage combat system.

That said, I love the music, I love the maps so far (there are SO MANY DOORS that I need to unlock). I'm glad the tutorial is short and the game gets to the good stuff right away, but narratively it's pretty dull.

I was expecting to love the hell out of this, so I'm kind of numb.

I don't think a single Bethesda game has had good sound mixing or voice acting, tbqh. They often have great SOUNDS, but the mixes are always off, regardless of who's involved.

Didn't realize input lag was a mechanic you had to learn now.

If the PS4/Xbox One versions suffer from input lag does that mean the PC version most likely will too? Or are PC games typically unaffected by input lag?

The Xbox One version does not suffer from input lag. Only the PS4 version.

And Bethesda claims they're aware and that it's fixed in the real game. Still, if you want to be safe and are planning to preorder on a console... well, go Xbox One. The mimics are such garbage that I wouldn't want to fight them on anything less accurate than a mouse, though.

Huh, it's like Deus Ex. Half Life and Portal made a baby.

I like having a demo available. Makes me think of Nier, which i also picked up. Because there was a demo first I got to try and saw I'd enjoy it.

I hope things go back to having demos again, i've missed that!

I'm not sure why you'd make any of those comparisons. It lifts pretty much everything directly from System Shock. It's just not very good at it.

Played the demo up until the stopping point. Got to say, I'm pleasantly surprised how much I really enjoyed it. I've always looked at this game cynically for being rather uninspired in basically trying to be a System Shock game, but you know what, it plays like a damn Shock game. And I'm okay with that.

Already puts Infinite in the dirt considering it plays like an actual Shock game. Very open ended level design that allows me to really explore and uncover all kinds of secrets and deal with enemy encounters in a variety of different ways based off of my chosen skills.

A nice array of both tools and weapons to use as well to deal with enemies. The game really demands you improvise by using either the environment or your tools to deal with enemies and that's something I like. You're going to have trouble if you're just running up to enemies trying to kill them with just a gun or wrench.

Already had an encounter where I had to deal with some ??? phantom who was quite powerful. Sneaked around it, grabbed all of the explosive canisters in the room and stacked them all together, and got his attention by throwing an object over at the explosives. Blew the fucker right up. Quite fun.

Again, System Shock but with this added creativity, I think I see myself playing this, but not day one. Perhaps later. Only thing that annoyed me was the music. Sometimes it just blasts at the smallest enemy encounter and continues to play loudly even after combat has ended. Like, shut the fuck up already.

How does the Xbox One version hold up? Impressions in here are all over the place.

Played quite well for me. Doesn't look like the prettiest game ever, though.

Yeah, little cues of Half Life here and there and then they hit you with that 0451 Deus Ex code. I like the setting, just wish it'd been harder sci fi visual design without the art deco and retro uniforms.
