16min youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f4dW1YpuoA

Mic.com said:
An Overwatch gameplay video gaining traction online can only be described as 16 minutes of pure horror. Throughout the entire recording, several members on a female player's team verbally harassed her, hurling moronic, sexist, rapacious vitriol at her — nonstop.

The video is absolutely gut-wrenching, not only because the content itself is horrifying, but also because it stands for something larger: It's a distillation of the experience of gaming online if you don't fit the stereotypical image of what a gamer is supposed to be.

"I am putting this and a few other examples of the way I am treated up not just for entertainment," Overwatch player Glisa said in the description of the YouTube video. "I want to give people a look into how women are treated online. This is not OK, and I'm doing my best to show that."

Overwatch players Acayri and Joel verbally harassed Glisa for 16 minutes straight
The majority of the harassment came from an Overwatch player called Acayri, an individual who can only be described as a Yahoo comments section come to life. Here is just a brief sampling of some of the things he said over the course of the match:

• "Mercy, heal me. I won't call you ugly again. Just kidding, you're probably ugly."
• "I like how this Mercy's trying to heal me because she wants me."
• "I'm assuming Glisa's setup is in her kitchen — as you know, she is a woman."
• "We honestly lost because we had an e-girl on our team"
• "Can you stop talking please?"
• "I don't care, post about it on Tumblr, you sexist."
• "I like Americans because they're good at raping people."
• "This isn't sexual harassment, this is gender equality."
• "You're a woman, do you even have a right to give your opinion?"

Glisa tried to defend herself — and it only made things worse
More at the source.

The video's long but worth a watch just to see some of the bullshit that people experience online for no reason other than their gender. Gaming has to evolve past this and at some point regressive assholes like the harassers in this video should be left behind. Hopefully it's sooner rather than later.

Lol dumbass teens are going to get banned.

Stuff like this should be recorded all the time for people to see, not only to ban idiots, but so you can show it to those that say this never happens.

Yeah... this is pretty consistent with my own experiences. I usually get harassed on text rather than voice, however. ><;

always chasing the next thrill
Online gaming with randoms sucks.
It always sucked i can't even remember ever having a normal evening playing with randoms.

After watching this video for 3 min i turned it off.
It's like 5 guys trying to take a shit in my ears.

How do people enjoy this? 🤔

It's so fucking sad that there are still so many dicks like that poisoning the gaming community and the human race itself.

This always depresses me to see this is still something that's so common.

This is the reason why I don't play competitive and have audio chat turned off in OW. I've only been insulted once in team (text) chat and my team mates shockingly defended me.

Unfortunately people are terrible most of the time when it comes to score/points/rep whatever you wanna call it. And I just don't get how you can be so disgusting just because the other person can't see you.

-sigh-

Overwatch's community is so toxic, my friend actually just turned off all the chat functionality altogether. Makes it a real pian when I try to group up with him but I don't blame him really.

at last, for christ's sake
As an Overwatch player, agreed. This is how I, and all others I know, act each game.

Oh, im sure you are decent people. Sadly it hasnt been the same for me and the usual random guy who gets shredded apart in each game in solo queue since day one

shit like this makes me shrug when people like this are doxxed.

"oh no, little henry is such a good kid and it was taken out of context"

no, sorry. you just raised a piece of shit human being regardless of age who isn't worth the carbon in their body

Yuuuuuuuup this is why no voice chat in games is far and away better.

It's a shame that this is even the solution but it's one that I use as well.

Thinking on it, I've had more games ruined by voice chat experiences than I've ever had positive experiences with non-party voice chat (read: not one positive experience)

Sadly, not specific to Overwatch.

I just don't bother using voice chat unless it's with friends.
Does/can Blizzard do anything about these ?
You can report players for harassment as far as I remember. I'd imagine at worst they'd get a short temp ban, though.

Some people are super toxic in Overwatch.

I played one match where one guy on my team kept bullying another person for like ten minutes, even after they quit. Our entire team told him to stop but the dude just kept trying to justify the harassment. Shit was super fucked up.

I'd say the female player has a higher chance of being attacked because of this than the shitbags she was playing with.

This is why I don't feel bad about my first-strike-you're-blocked policy. Depending on how bad that instance is, maybe I'll throw in a report.

Thankfully I have at least 2-8 other people I play with online for Overwatch on our own Discord so I don't hear alot of others online. but half of the time its pretty fucking disgusting especially on the weekend when the youngins come to play....

Can't report players on PS4 for some stupid reason, we're only a year post launch...

At best, at the absolute best, voice chat results in some asshat barking orders at you like mr king shit master strategist.

Most other times its some kind of Donald Trump lunatic locker room wankfest.

Just so much nicer to just play without all the nonsense and bullshit.

This is absolutely disgusting and unfortunately far too common in online gaming.

I have anxiety using voice chat, and I'm a white straight male. I can't imagine how difficult it is for women, non-straight people, minorities, people with disabilities, and so on. They're much stronger than I.

Part of the reason OW has very little appeal for me to return to it. The first two months were great, everyone was nice. Tried about 3 months ago and go all kinds of shit heads on chat and voice.

Sucks...

See, this shit is why Nintendo has resisted voice chat for so long. Because playing video games is supposed to be fun. For everyone. Not a place for sexist fuckbags to show off how macho they are to their friends by making every woman they encounter feel like shit.

Fucking terrible. No one should have to go through this.

Also when people complain about people not talking on PSN or Live voice chat anymore. I'm sure stuff like this and the racist talk is a big reason.

Most people just go in private lobbies with their friends.

This has nothing to do with sexism and everything to do with anonymity. Some people will be jerks behind the veil of anonymity, and they'll use whatever's easiest (standout characteristic) to get you riled up (nigger, bitch, fat, chink, terrorist, etc).

It's like high school but amplified because of the protection anonymity offers.

Stop feeding them and recognise that they are just being jerks and would likely attack you even if you were a dude or fight back with whatever means you have.

Don't be the victim.

Really? That's pretty shit. I guess you'd have to report via PSN instead?

On the PC version it's had the ability since the start iirc.

It's not just to do with anonymity. People say that kind of shit with their full name clearly visible for all to see.

I don't know, maybe the fact that there was a Widow and Hanzo.

On Offense.

On Hanamura.

Had something to do with it.
