Madden 18 announced: Tom Brady (G.O.A.T. Edition), Frostbite, teaser trailer, XB1/PS4

God damn, that salt from Jason is lol.

I probably won't buy it because I only ever buy madden once every few years but the combination of a story mode and the different styles (arcade, sim, competitive) have me intrigued. If past madden games are supposed to be "arcade" then no thanks, but if "arcade" means closer to 2k5 style or (!!!) NFL Blitz, I am in like flynn. Basically, I'll be waiting on reviews and getting into the meat of what these changes actually are.

Regardless, though, fuck Brady.

GOAT? Seriously? I was never fond of that abbreviation, it's just stupid. You can have a Game of the Generation(GotG) or a Game of the Year(GotY) but you cannot have a Game of All Time. That doesn't even mean anything, is this game more gamier than the others?

Well i guess Goat Meat is pretty gamy?

Is not just a tie in to Brady on the front cover?

Ummmmm, I believe the G.O.A.T label is directed at Brady. As in Greatest of All Time.

EDIT: B.E.A.T.E.N

I think I can skip this year, unless the story mode is actually impressive I'll probably just use the extra money for the sweet Shaq edition of 2k18. Unless it comes to the Switch as a decent port.

Awesome cover, that's the look of a man who pulled the biggest upset in Superbowl history and instantly infuriated half the country all at once.

I doubt that Arcade mode would be closer to NFL 2K5... NFL 2K5 is lauded by football videogame purists because it's much more simulation-focused than Madden has been historically.

I don't think it'll be like Blitz because the NFL is never going to allow a game like Blitz again, but I think splitting up the three modes (which I love the idea of) will allow EA to focus on a sim-style game for people who want that (primarily, connected franchise players), and then they'll still be able to have arcade-like performance for people who would be frustrated by a sim game. It's always been a tough line for them to walk, to make QB and WR play, or OLine/DLine play be simulation, but still have that be fun for people who want to pick up a controller and throw 85%-90% completion percentage, scramble with a fast QB more easily, or play with a more limited, simplified playbook.

As a sim player who really focuses on calling the right plays from a football perspective, it would be frustrating for me to play against people who would call the same 3 plays over and over, and mostly just work to exploit the AI in the game... And while I'd usually win those games (say, like 70% win, 30% lose), winning like that wouldn't really be fun for me, so I usually just didn't play online unless against people I knew. But even then, it's frustrating to set "house rules" on play style, so hopefully this decision can improve that.

I'd like to see a sim game where a QB throwing 68% is considered a good game, and a running back rushing 18 times for 78 yards is considered productive. In Madden now, throwing 68% would be considered terrible, as you can easily go an entire season throwing 85% completion percentage, where the 15% incompletions, like a bunch of those are interceptions. It was an artificial balance in the game. So while I dunno if they'll nail it this year, I think it's a great direction to go in.

Ultimately, this may be moving to a future where Arcade and Competitive mode get released as a standalone, software as a service game that is only Ultimate Team mode, and then Simulation + Arcade gets released as a separate, $60 game that focuses on story mode and connected franchise, but also includes MUT. I've thought EA would go that route at least with Ultimate Team splitting off for a few years, and it's a flat microtransaction-supported release.

I think that's a pretty fair way to look at it. I've only ever played madden with the mindset of wanting to chuck the rock and throw some stiffarms, bat down some balls and land a few sacks. I don't think I have the headspace for sports sim gameplay, so something more arcadey is more my style/speed. I definitely don't actually think they'd go with something like Blitz, but it sure would be something to see.

That said, the last time I got into a madden title, I was surprised at how well MUT got its hooks in. I usually play a few games here and there, maybe a full season, and that's about it; it never finds itself competing for my dollars as a day one purchase, but MUT had me logging more games than I ever had in an effort to get those better players.

As far as going with a full on MUT spinoff, I don't know if they'd do that with the console versions (I mean people have been saying Activision should just spin off COD's multi for a while, too) but that's exactly what Madden Mobile is.

They could still announce it later, 2k is coming to the switch after all

I don't know about that. It uses Frostbite engine and I remember when we heard a frostbite Dev on here mention that they haven't had time to actually work on the engine for the Switch.

They're gonna need a classic cover or lose quite a few sales. No way I'd ever buy Brady-branded anything. Know I'm not the only one.

At least I can root for the Madden Curse.

Just buy the digital version, then you won't have to worry about the Tom being on the cover of the box!!! :)
