Kotaku: "Injustice 2's Facial Animation Is So Good It's Uncanny"

I'd rather they had Andromeda level facial animations if it meant that in game the characters didn't look like stilted stop motion animation rejects.

You must destroy this before the stroke of midnight or forever be cursed.

Injustice 1 design was an abomination

Those proportions.

Why are the facial animations so good, but the attack animations are bad?

Different people worked on it.

Facial mocap clearly had a big push for this dev cycle.
Well they were ok with their current combat animation solution.

I'm sure there are a lot of people at NRS that fully know the animations need a complete overhaul.
And from the outside looking in, if I had to guess as to why the animation is still like this, I would say it's probably because of some random stubborn upper management at NRS that is in charge because of seniority rather then talent.
Not some silly homage excuse.

And I don't think anything will just change unless there is a big enough backlash against it.
That's why the netcode and faces got fixed.

The facial animation in this game is really fucking good

no, like REALLY fucking good

The eyes can use some work, but the other subtitles in the face are being nailed here.

"So you won't kill, but you're fine with traumatic brain injury."

I KNOW, RIGHT?

I seriously laughed at that statement since I'd already paused the video after the punching to think to myself "Was it really necessary to keep punching him in the face 5 times after he was already unconscious?"

Calling it now, next NRS game is going to completely revamp their in-game animations. This studio is advancing by leaps and bounds with each new release. Hugely impressive facial work on display here.

Looks cool, but I still think that L.A. Noire is better. Maybe it's a acting thing, but who am I to tell?

NRS has made huge steps forward with this game. Not just from Injustice 1 and MKX but from the start of the development of the game itself. We all saw the evolution of their female faces over the past year.

My hope is that they take their improvements to facial animation to MK11 and with that, make a real effort to truly improve the battle animations.

They have improved sure, but this seems like viral marketing by Kotaku than actually uncanny valley. Have they even seen some of the facial and tech demos out now? Blur cinematics for Halo Wars 2 are more impressive than this.

I guess that's why NRS games are multi million sellers and Capcom fighters are slowly going into niche territory. Not saying you're wrong or right, just that in terms of production values and SP content, is clear who is the winner, and how important are those for sales.

The good ole sales argument

Yes, the NRS games are more appealing to casual players and sell more, obviously. That's not what we were discussing though.

I love Capcom fighters to death, but they really need to take a lot of pages out of NRS's book if they want to sell good numbers again. These aren't even the hard lessons to learn. Mechanically they make incredible fighters most of the time, just double down on the SP content.

I agree, the games need more content for people who aren't looking to go to/watch EVO every year.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

LA Noire has a similar problem to Injustice 2. The head feels disconnected from the body and that's basically because it was.

Honestly, we probably arent at this point yet, but if any genre was going to be the first to build a full human anatomy model with all 200+ bones and all 600 muscles with full physics based movement on each muscle. It would probably be a 2.5D fighting game.

It's driving me nuts that nearly all gaming sites are refusing to address the body animations.
A lot of people don't even see an issue with it so I don't know why reviewers would either. Especially as the presentation of intros, supers etc is good.

It's the only thing holding them back imo. Everything else about their packages are killer

Given the strides they've taken to improve the online and character models, I feel they can and will do the same for the in-game animations.

MKX was a big improvement from MK9, hopefully MK11 will be even bigger.

I bet Netherrealm will listen to the attack animation complaints.

Injustice 3 will look Hollywood tier.

I bet they will too. Everything people complained about in the previous games they made, they made significant improvements on it in the next game.

The faces do indeed look amazing 90% of time. Some of them can look a bit jarring. Kara's and Catwoman's jumped out at me. Superman's looks a bit Lawnmower man CGI sometimes.

I think the inconsistent voice acting from some of the cast makes it stand it a little more than it should.

It's ridiculous how much of a quality jump in design and faces there's been between injustice 1 and this.
