What and how?Because they have better relationship with the companies, by the fact that it is a western company.
Sure, PS4 sells double of what Xbone sells, so it is the most supported system, and they use that advantage to land exclusivity deals, but Microsoft will always have an advantage in the west.
Think of it as a handicap. It's small but it's there and will always be there (and Sony has a clear advantage over Microsoft in Japan, but not over Nintendo).

For all we know, anyone in this thread could've made that rumor up and posted it.Anyone else read the word "4chan" in the thread title and immediately get a slimy feeling about the thread?
Advantages are mercurial things. They aren't constant. They are subject to change depending on relations and sales incentives.
Hope is true! Monster Hunter is crying to look next gen.
Is the same engine since forever!
The most important change Capcom would have to make to appeal to the western market is to get rid of or at least reduce the preparation and therefor farming of items needed to do quests.
Speaking from personal experience a lot of my friends couldn't get into the series (especially MH3U) because of this and the slow start which basically acts as a 2 hour tutorial.
So I'm very happy to see it being rumored that they adress those issues.

And this is exactly my point. In equal conditions, before launch, coming from the PS3 selling better than 360 (overall and outselling it everywhere in the final year), Microsoft had the advantage with publishing deals.Pretty much, look how the exclusivity deals with Activision's COD and EA's BF has been switched this gen.

Thing is the switch is selling everywhere and not just Japan, so Japanese devs can no longer ignore Nintendo in any market nowMS had a western support advantage at the beginning of the 360. Most of that was just a timed advantage in the end.
Western support is predominantly multiplatform. Don't see how MS has an advantage there. EA access? Is that the thought?
...
OT: idk what Sony's thinking on Japan is. They don't really need it much for either developer or consumer support, but, at the same time, it does net them a bunch of niche exclusives and adds certain flavors to their overall library.
I could see them being overprotective against Nintendo which is still trying to "win" Japan even as Sony has turned to building devices for the outside world first, but you'd think that Sony will still have the platform that gives Japan access to the west even if Nintendo re energizes the domestic market with Switch or something else down the road.
This makes a lot of sense though.Sounds like SFV where 1/4 of the game will release and the team will continue to develop content at a slow pace.
I think the main argument against this is the unnamed IP's sales estimate. Unless this is for FY2018, they're only expecting 1.5M sales for an alleged AAA next gen open world game that is supposed to reimagine the series for the west? Wouldn't they need to recoup more for something like that? Didn't RE7 just miss it's estimate while doing the exact same thing on what would probably be a smaller budget by virtue of MonHun's nature?
This makes a lot of sense though.
'The west' is not synonymous with 'the US'. Sony has a huge historical advantage over MS in Europe where PlayStation/Xbox are concerned.Because they have better relationship with the companies, by the fact that it is a western company.

FFXV had better dungeon design than FF13 and even FFX. Have you even played FFXV? What dumbing down relative to Versus lol
For all we know, anyone in this thread could've made that rumor up and posted it.
It could even be me.
if a mass market MH is anything like Final Fantasy Explorers... it will be terrible and bomba hard
Because they're all horrible and we shouldn't support knockoffs?
Wait so Sony is afraid of losing ground in the East? Isn't that the place where they have a lot of support? Especially over the Xbox One?
I prefer them over Monster Hunter. Good controls goes a long way

Are you saying MH, a series known for letting you tightly control your character and it's actions, has bad controls?
The only thing that sounds promising about MH5 is the idea of open world; maybe I'm the only one that finds it annoying but the loading screens between areas seems so nonsensical (being knocked back from Area 6 to Area 5 by a Great Jaggi really pissed me off when I had to wait the 8 seconds of loading only to run right back and wait another 8 seconds of loading, and then the damn thing limps away to escape three hits later). I don't see why we can't have seamless transitions between 12 or so areas.
Well, they are mostly losing ground to Nintendo, but that's been the case since the Wii days. They sort of reclaimed the home console area, but Switch will probably end those ambitions as it doubles as a home console in addition to portable. That said, I just cannot see what Sony gets out of this especially now that we know Switch is a portable. The portion of people who play home console games probably overlaps heavily with those who bought MGS and FFXV which means not really many new sales. Japan likes Monster Hunter, but it likes portable Monster Hunter in particular so short of a portable PS4 MH5 sales are kind of capped at around 1/4 of MH4, MHP3rd, MHX, etc.
Like if this was an agreement that harms Capcom, I could understand it. However, the only loser in this scenario is Sony. Capcom gets Sony's money regardless. They can be risky since not many MH fans buy the home console versions anyway. Capcom gets the good sales of MHP 5th. Nintendo gets more people to migrate over to their new handheld quickly also giving Nintendo power in the home console market. Fans still get a traditional MH game in MHP5th.

It feels like sony would have nothing to gain from buying an exlusive monster hunter game. They are already so ahead of the competition in terms of console sales. Buying exclusives feels like a desperate move to get people interested in your console.
Also the description for the MH5 sounds awful.
Was the last time you played the game on Wii? The load times since MH3U have been marginal, at worst. You barely have time to even read the "now loading" screen in MHG before the new area loads in.

The transitions make sense for the areas MH has. They let you jump large distances without forcing you to run all the way (which would be incredibly boring). Imagine having to go from the base of the volcano all the way to the peak after Rathalos flies away in an open world. That would be incredibly boring.
That's true. They'll have to be creative to get around that. Maybe shortcuts and stuff.
Personally I think camp placement has always been a tad fucked in the MH games. More maps need one way shortcuts like the 2nd gen desert map where you can jump down the hole from the camp. Plus they should do something interesting with the camp. Make it feel a little more useful and cozy. Maybe add a telescope where you can scout for monsters or something. Imagine if it was a seem less open world. You could scout out and see if there was a rathalos flying in the north or south. It would be cool.
Add a damn spit
Capcom should go DQXI route with MH. But they're too stupid to do it. A traditional MH would do great on PS4.
Sony is stupid too. To moneyhat games that are not really exclusives. They should learn with Nintendo.
Anyway, if true it's a potential flop like SFV.
For some reason I thought they eventually did add a spit. But I never cook anyways ever since they let Felynes do it for me.
Potential flop or not, it will still be big in Japan and that'd be the point of securing the game even if temporarily. People in Japan will eat this up just like they'd eat up a true Poke'mon rpg on Switch. So, while it may seem stupid, it'd likely prove to be very auspicious for Sony and their userbase considering they're playing a game that hasn't been featured on its consoles since PS2?
The boat has sailed on Japan for the PS4.
How come?

What works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.
They are competing for it, and if Sony loses the Japanese market (as in becoming irrelevant, as I previously defined it), then the only thing for them to compete for is Western support, and Microsoft has a clear advantage there.
I played up to Altissia before I decided that continuing just wasn't worth it. From what I experienced, Caves Caves Caves with a smattering of forced stealth military bases is not great dungeon design.
And by dumbing down I was referring to Versus' Kingdom Hearts-esque action combat vs the strange floaty halfway house not-quite-combos-but-not-quite-ATB setup that we got in the end product, not to mention the brutally homogenised magic jar crafting system and completely opaque (if pleasantly flashy) summons.
