Ramadan 2017 |OT| Let the real Hunger Games begin!

I'm not sure. Generally, it's just the regular headache, mild fever, muscle ache and such. It usually goes away on its own after a day or two.

Bro I think it's Dr time, go just in case, I'm pretty sure a flyover cold is supposed to include Muscle Ache.

Selamat berbuka puasa though bro and get better inshalla.

it's just me being selfish. when you smell someone cooking in the house it makes fasting that much more difficult imo. only then does your hunger hit you the worst

Nah the worst is when someone eats something you want in front of you. Smelling good food is up there though.

Guys can I ask a question here, I'm completely ignorant so go easy!

I'm not Muslim. I'm visiting London in a few weeks and was hoping to catch up with my friend and his Muslim wife. He wasn't born Muslim but has converted. I don't want to intrude on them during Ramadan so is it appropriate for Muslims and non Muslims to eat together in the evenings when breaking the fast? He's invited me but I think he's just too polite not to. Just if it's not I'll politely decline the instead.

For a lot of people, it's preferred to share the breaking of the fast with as many people as possible. :)

Just got back from the gym after my 9-5. Only did half my workout but it was very doable. I may push myself a little further next time.

Ate a lot of watermelons & yogurt, drank a lot of water so I didn't feel too exhausted. I think my fear of the effect of working out + fasting was definitely overstated. Hopefully I can maintain it throughout the month!

i end up spitting a lot during ramadan. you know, like after i brush my teeth or in the shower coz I keep thinking I got fresh water in my mouth.

Ok I am thinking of working out before I break my fast... How do you do it without getting dehydrated?

Slower pace? Less or more cardio versus arm day or leg day?

I'm an extremely novice guy at the gym, been only going for 3 months now. I followJason Blaha's novice program. It basically does a full body workout every alternate day. On the rest days, I go and do some cardio.

For Ramadan, I'm straight abandoning cardio days and just doing full rest days without even going to the gym. And since Jason Balaha's program is based on 5x5 lifts. For Ramadan I'm just doing 3x5 for each workout. My main goal is just to maintain rather than build by keeping the muscles involved in the full range of motions.

And yeah, key to not getting dehydrated is IMO having as much watermelon, avocados, yogurt, dates, and water during the night as possible.

Futoor at work (I am doing an evening shift) has mostly been oily-ish food from a nearby restaurant :S
If I want oily food, home made is contenting enough.

Just swim into the ocean and catch a fish then grill it on a fire!
I'm sorry if that was a bad joke.
Do you work in a rig or something? They're one of the few places I can think of where they don't schedule work around Ramadan.

Trying suhoor meals from Buzzfeed (in the OP) this year. It's been working out fine so far, I never know what to have for suhoor.

Yesterday I found myself watching Gordon Ramsay cooking videos in the middle of the day.

I hate myself it seems
Last Ramadan I got into a habit of watching Tasty and Tastemade videos in the afternoon. It was fun.

Thanks.

I'm alright for work today. But now I'm totally exhausted arriving at home. Glad I made it.

My mother got really ill fasting so she broke her fast and is taking medicine. Took her to the hospital. I hope she's better now.

For sure Red I hope she has a speedy recovery. Once she's stable again and the doctor finds out why it happened, make sure she doesn't do that no more

I got into a pretty difficult discussion with my mother last night during iftar. It started with me telling her that when I was in high school, I learned that after the prophet conquered the Arabian peninsula, he allowed Jews and Christians to practice their faith, but they had to pay a tax. I said that wasn't fair.

Sometimes it's better to let the older generation think whatever they want to think. It's harsh but we're the future and they're not.

There is some stuff that they argue when it comes to politics for example that I just know is factually wrong because I actually read into that subject but I'll just have us agree to disagree.

I will never back down from having my own opinion and will clearly say my stance but if they want to be wrong so badly then that's their choice. At least they allow me to have my own opinion which is a privilege I have.

I don't know how to multi quote but thank you guys she's much better now I'll keep my eye on her and make sure she eats well during iftar.

Edit: She isn't diabetic, but she has thalassaemia minor. I have no idea if that makes fasting harder.

The only point she had on me is that I don't read the Qur'an. Which is true, I never have read the Qur'an. She told me surah Yasin is the heart of the Qur'an and the thing is yes I can read the book and maybe it can enlighten me but I have a feeling I will find a lot of stuff I don't like as well. I can't resonate with it.

I'm fairly certain that God is real. I grew up being taught Islam, so Islam is the only way I know how to worship God and the teachings and concepts of God make sense to me but there are other things about the religion I cannot resonate with. Does that mean I go by my own whims?

If it does, what am I supposed to do? I cannot just dogmatically accept something that feels and sounds wrong, you know?

word yeah if the doctor said she needs to eat more make sure she does that man

I guess I'll chime in on this one. You can go about this in two ways:
  • Do a light workout before breaking your fast
  • Or work out after taraweeh and after having regained your energy from iftar . Then use the protein intake as a suhoor meal.

Either way, try and fit in a quick power nap before iftar to remove a bit of the weariness of the day. You need to account for resting.

I'm an extremely novice guy at the gym... yogurt, dates, and water during the night as possible.

Glad to hear you're hitting the gym, finally!

Yeah, take it easy for now and using a full body workout seems like a good start. You'll want to start slow and then build up your own synthesised routine along the way. I personally do an amalgamation of splits and full body.

A typical "Leg Day" would look like:

Stretching/warm-up
Conditioning (weighted):
  • Squats *10
  • Shoulder Shrugs *10
  • Walking Lunges *10*2
  • Dumbbell dead lifts *10

Basic Training
  • Push-ups -max reps }
  • Sit ups -max reps } *5 rounds
----------------------------

  • Inclined power walk -max setting, medium jogging pace: 3 miles
Threw in some relearning K-1 arts.
  • 500*2 jabs

Abs
  • Bench crunch 15 wgt rep +15 pulsed }
  • Hanging leg raises 10+10(obliques) } Superset (SS) *3
  • Weighted side raises (for obliques and back) }
  • Cable crunch 15-20

Legs

  • Leg press 20 reps }
  • Leg extensions 20 reps } SS *3

  • Barbell squats 12-15 reps }
  • Hamstring curls 12-15 reps} SS *3

  • Walking Lunges 15*2 }
  • Seated weighted calf raises 15 slow +15 pulses } SS *3
  • Then burn it all out with the step machine and climb 300 steps!

Soon you'll look like this, let's go!

Salaam brah, been a while. Fancy hanging out this Ramadan? EffingVic, you also live in NY right? Want to tag along?

Sounds like you're talking about jizya and dhimmis? It's a long story but to paraphrase, you're comparing two different systems that contrast the pre-nation and nation state.

I'll link this podcast that talks about this topic at the 17min mark. Although, I highly recommend that you listen to the whole thing, it's really insightful stuff.

Ramadan Kareem everyone, stay strong.

walaikuum, it has been a while, it's been a year lol. i'm unemployed so i've been upstate for about 2 months, I'm coming down today to pay rent and get a haircut, i'll be here till Friday. you got the same cellular?

i'll check out the podcast in a little bit. honestly i don't remember all the systems I was referring to, it's just something I remember long ago back when I was in high school.

First day back to work and I'm finding it easier than milling around the house all day over the weekend. My mind is occupied with other things. I didn't hydrate well enough this morning though so my mouth feels like a desert.

I also signed up to work a food line at a local shelter in June (or July) as part of doing some good deeds.

It's not fair because that's only half the story. Did you know those who pay Jizya don't have to pay the 2.5% in charity? The Muslims have to pay the 2.5%, not the Jews and Christians. So the Muslims actually pay more then the Jews and Christians though everybody has to pay something. The Jews and Christians also get a protection contract. Jizya for the people of the book and Zakat for the Muslims, there is a balance here, but the Jews and Christians pay less and get more(as far as worldly concerns go).

Probably shouldn't trust your high school education on Islam or the first page of Google results for that matter.

i'm older than you think. high school for me was a long time ago. i dunno what they teach kids in school nowadays.

why not just make taxes the same for everyone? why did it have to depend on your faith?

IIRC jizya was done because the army was formed of muslims only so they wanted some form of contributions from the non muslims as help to the army. Of course this is an old system and shouldn't be applied today since it marginalises people according to faith.
