The Verge: Project Scorpio might be the Xbox's final form: a Windows PC

A small comment from Head of Xbox Phil Spencer was the final bit of news necessary to convince me Microsoft's Project Scorpio will be named Xbox 10 S, and it will serve as a Windows 10 gaming PC built for the living room. I know, that's a big claim — and I don't encourage anyone to gamble on it. But ahead of Microsoft's E3 event on Sunday, I'd like to collect the evidence that Microsoft is eager to put a computer beneath your television.

As a fully functional PC, Project Scorpio could be an Xbox, an Apple TV, and an Amazon Echo all rolled into one. Would Microsoft really pass up that opportunity?

The naming convention would fit in with Windows 10 S, the newly announced OS. Windows 10 S only runs programs downloaded from the Windows Store, which would allow Microsoft considerable control of what can and can't be put onto the console. And the naming convention would explain why Microsoft went with Xbox One S for its lead up console last fall.

I'll tell ya what. I don't personally have an interest in buying another Xbox, but if Xbox 10 S ends up being capable of running Steam or other gaming services I would be blown away and have to buy one.

Although the new OS (Windows 10 S) is gimped in only allowing Windows apps to run, which I believe the current Xbox is already capable of, it wouldn't be as exciting.

Well considering Phil has outright said thats not what it is before, basically saying we are making a console not a pc.

Well, it obviously is not going to be full fledged Windows. Perhaps some kinda gimped version, but obviously they are not going to let you play Steam on it. Kinda defeats the point of making a games console, to make money losing hardware so Steam can make money. Defeats the whole point.

I am sure they could easily do it bu no one would cares about a walled garden windows.

You don't think it would encourage more Windows apps to be developed?

They made a great case in access to the Windows stores would allow people to use the console as a PC, which would be convenient for many folks.

Would added a few million Xbox's onto the hundreds of millions of Windows 10 pc's that already have the store change anything?

It just seems like more of a neat technical exercise more then something someone would actually want.

For the umpteenth time, I don't know why W10 games are on the Widows Store and not designated to the Xbox App as a launcher/platform.

I seriously doubt we'll be seeing Scorpio boot into a Windows desktop.

I don't think we'll see a Start menu but it doesn't matter that much if it can boot all UWP apps. I would assume a lot of the apps on the app store like the new Soundcloud app are UWP. I know Skype works seamlessly but I'm not sure about others since I use a browser for most apps like Netflix, etc on PC.

Honestly it should be a separate event for all the Windows stuff. If they do it right it could be a gamechanger but if they botch it by not having enough focus on games similar to the Xbox One reveal with it's heavy entertainment focus then they will be in serious trouble. Gonna be really interesting conference, that's for sure.

I think it'll be an upgraded version of the Xbox One, but then as the press conference ends there's a trailer for Xbox on PC where it shows the Scorpio and says "This isn't even my final form".

It'd turn the Windows store from a useless secondary marketplace on most PCs, into the primary marketplace on one of the industry's biggest consoles. That goes a long way to encourage dev adoption.

As an Xbox the Xbox could already be all those things if MS wanted

Because Microsoft never wanted to put games on pc in the first place apart from mobile ones shared with smartphones.
Then when they realised xbox one is lost cause they tried to salvage it by expanding into windows store.

Xbox 10 S? Well, ok then. I don't expect full blown windows access.

It makes sense but I feel all this move would do is turn into the new Xbox Store.

As I already have a PC with Windows 10 that's superior to Scorpio specs this would be a very dull out come from my perspective. Certainly it would kill any intererst I have in a MS console if it's just a PC for the living room with the same library I can access on my existing PC.

I doubt it. I mean the os will only have 3 gigs of ram to work with. Could be a special version of Windows that will only install uwp. You will not be playing steam on this system.

I think there's zero chance of that happening. You don't open up a closed platform and lose all that money on third party games.

What am I reading in here?

Xbox One already runs Windows 10
Xbox One already downloads from the Windows Store
Xbox One is already an Apple TV and Amazon Echo if you have Kinect and the Air Server app

I don't see it happening. At least not that big of a sweeping change so fast. Finally the name Xbox 10 S? Horrible. I'd rather it be called Xbox One 10... atleast that rolls off the tongue better.

Yeah, it's nonsense. The Xbox One S already have all that stuff. I don't the point of the article?

You wouldn't be interested if it's a PC that can also play Xbox One and 360 games.

Which means being forced into the terrible Windows Store.

Which gamers have been using for Xbox One for a while now.

The article just doesn't realize that the Xbox One already does all this stuff, no need to emphasize non-gaming stuff at E3 briefing. Just a fluff article.

I'd imagine MS has no intentions of selling you a steam capable machine.

They want that xbox live $, that game pass money, and 70% of every sale.

If Valve put a Steam app in the Windows store and coughed up 70%, maybe... but that'll happen when he'll freezes over.

What, you don't like the way Xbox Tennis rolls off your tongue?

It'll have the same games as your PC regardless so, yeah, I suppose you don't have a need for an Xbox. Don't see how this will kill any interest you had. At the least it'll be a console with most of the same games as your more powerful PC. If this rumor is true it'll still be that same box but with the benefit of the apps from the PC windows store. I guess what I'm saying is based on your post I don't see why you were interested in the first place and I'm even more confused why added functionality would decrease your enthusiasm.

So with both Xbox & Win10 games on the same device, how would they address charging for online play on one platform but not the other?

They could drop the Live fee & go all in on Game Pass, but that'd be a substantial amount of cash left on the table.

Exactly. The article hasn't done any research or the writer doesn't own a Xbox.
