If Sunset Overdrive, ReCore, Banjo N&B, Viva Piñata, or Quantum Break indicate that it's not that easy. Even Halo Wars 2 performed badly despite having the Halo IP attached.

It's never easy.

But you have to continue to put forth the effort. If one of those games were as good as, say, Zelda BotW or Last of Us, do you think people would ignore them?

The thing about having a diverse portfolio isn't that you are guarunteed to have everyone be a top seller. It's that you'll have a console with software that appeals to a wide range of gamers, increasing the likelihood that any individual gamer will be attracted to the platform.

Ah yes, thank you.

I really don't know any other company that does such stunts. I long for a new F-Zero or Metroid, but I absolutely did not feel teased with one at all. I'd love a new Monkey Ball, but Sega does nothing to get my hopes up just to have them crashing down soon thereafter. The same about a new 3D Rayman. I don't get it what it is with Rare's contempt for Banjo fans. At least during the Kinect Sports era, they kept quite about Banjo and no one in their right mind would get hyped about the possibility of them announcing one. Since 2015, I feel they are making it a specific goal of theirs to make Banjo fans suffer.

Haha yeah, I understand what you mean. :/

I just think Rare doesn't understand how hype and teasing works. They don't seem to know when to keep their mouths shut about certain things. They should probably go back to being a secretive studio. They seem more suited for that kind of thing lol

But maybe they just enjoy being dicks to their fans. They've always been this way. Remember how they used to tease Killer Instinct 3 for many, many years before it actually came out, and it turned out to not even be developed by them? Yeah.......Lol. They're just a bunch of bastards. :p

Wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens with Banjo. They'll probably just keep teasing it for many years, and then some other studio will finally develop a new one or something. They don't seem interested in reviving any old IPs for whatever reason.

i don't think quality has anything to do with it it. It's about knowing the audience. A broken game like Friday the 13th will probably end up being the 2nd best selling Xbox game behind Injustice(could be #1). Or looonat how Sony has adapted GOW4 to fit their European audience more. It's not as if the previous games were bad.

If a Banjo game were released and 90+ on MC, it would likely still get massively outsold by Friday the 13th. MS needs hits that would resonate with the overall fan base. State of decay 2 is pretty much perfectly built for that task. Crackdown 3 & SoT also for that

Also just to add, I don't think platform dov story is a big reason for it not selling. Maybe on here but brand loyalty, price etc those things matter when launching a console

I still think that a new Banjo-Kazooie game would sell well enough to justify its existence even in this day and age. Reasonable budget and price, back to basics gameplay and release on XBO/W10 and Steam.

Too bad it's not happening. : /

In chasing hits and/or market trends they could end up chasing away the fans, though. Look at what happened to Fable.

Agree with all of this.

Did Turtle Beach just confirm new Wireless Tech on the Scorpio?

"The STEALTH 700 & 600 will be the first two officially licensed headsets for Xbox One available at retail using Microsoft’s new Xbox Wireless technology to connect directly to your console, just like your wireless controller does. No wires, no base station, no adapter needed. Just turn-on your headset and start playing"

I'm sorry if old, and I don't own a Xbox one/S

Edit:

"The STEALTH 700 & 600 headsets on Xbox One use Microsoft’s new Windows Sonic for Headphones to deliver immersive virtual surround sound for your games, movies and music."

Interesting. I'm expecting an Elite controller revision, but they just recently updated the regular controllers so this seems a little soon.

Quality has a lot to do with it.

Not that those games you mentioned are of a low quality (I loved Sunset and Quantum Break tremendously), but they didn't command the sort of attention that comparable titles on completing platforms did.

Getting 90+ review scores on an exclusive property is wonderful marketing .

Games like nuts and bolts, and recore weren't very good. Halo Wars and Viva Pinata inherently have limited appeal due to the their genre.

MS absolutely needs titles that excite their base I dont dispute that. I'm glad they are making SoT and Crackdown. But they also need to grow their base. And that will only happen with a diverse portfolio of high quality games.

It doesn't matter if Banjo would get outsold by Friday 13th. The people who like platformers would have more reason to invest in xbox, alongside those who like games like Friday 13th, thus growing the base and paving the way for future Banjos (and games like it) to find more success on the platform.

I don't think the fans that you say are there, are actually there tbh

Xbox Wireless was announced a year ago guys :p

https://www.theverge.com/2016/8/16/12503856/microsoft-xbox-wireless-platform-features

Gregg Mayles posting several rhymes just before E3, that point to a new reveal, other Rare people like Duncan chiming in on the rhyming, several photos of a Banjo-Kazooie bag posted, including photos that solely show the Banjo bag. All of which coming a short time after Mayles first commented on what he would do with the level design of a new Banjo (which sounded great by the way; and note that this particular posting is not part of what I am criticising, it's jsut for the context of the other ones). A posting about extending the show to be able to show all the new stuff and Rare making clear it's about them, where it was obvious that Sea of Thieves would have been on the show one way or the other.

You may think this is not much, but it has been 12 years since MS bought Rare, 12 years for Banjo fans to beg for a new game. 12 years in which there was a spin off title instead of a sequel to Banjo and then first a turn towards motion games, then some online stuff that isn't even gameplay focussed much (and was teased in advance as very typically Rareware, where Rareware is the name that was used only in the Nintendo era. What exactly is Rare-in-the-Nintendo-era about an online pirate sim?), they have really strained the nerves of Banjo fans well enough. Considering all the hype and disappointment at E3 2015, you'd think they'd really be more careful in that regard.
thanks for taking the time to explain.

Best selling game on a console doesn't necessarily equate to selling more consoles though. Although it definitely helps lol. You gotta have games like Banjo if you're gonna draw in a bigger audience. Then game sales for a console as a whole will go up, and the best selling game on the console is going to sell that much higher. That's what the ps4 has done and is doing this gen. I kind of feel like MS needs to stop looking for that one game that will be a huge success and instead take in a bigger number of modest projects to draw in new consumers. I'm not one of those people that thinks the xbox has no games, but I would like to see MS bring back some of their old IP's, and especially some of Rare's old IP's.

Yeah those rhymes were a tease, but it could have been about pirates all the same.

I don't believe we'll get a Banjo at E3 but at the same time if there was to be a announcement at E3, no way Rare would reveal that just here on Twitter. Just saying. :)

A best selling game likely means that the game is popular and sought after. Meaning more people want to play it. A diverse game doesn't necessarily mean that at all. If F23 was exclusive, it would do more to grow the fan base than Banjo would. It would add more value to the library because, hey this game is fun. Not it's something different. Sony has loads of single player cinematic story driven games. That doesn't mean adding Horizon ZD to the list won't grow their install base. Because it's a good and sought after game

Knowing your audience and only directly catering to the very slim field of shooters and racing sims may be good in the short run, bot not in the long run. In fact, the much more diverse line up on Xbox 360 (which, by the way, includes the most Rareware game Rare has made under Microsoft, Kameo, which sold well despite mild review resonance) did a good job in that initially and I think it did pay off - though I admit that it is hard to prove one way or the other. It was only when Microsoft started to limit itself to shooters, Kinect, racing sims and Fable that Xbox 360 lost traction and consumer trust. Now that Kinect and Fable broke away as well, they are shaping up to be rather redundant. Sony isn't nearly as limited in their own output. And I say that as someone who has never bought a Sony home console himself. In fact, I have an Xbox One for the better controller and the off-chance that Rare ever makes a great game like Banjo, Conker, Blast Corps, Kameo again in a genre that I like (because Nuts & Bolts, Viva Pinata and Kinect Sports were actually very well-made, just not in genres I like).

Teasing Banjo at Twitter would do no harm to an announcement of Banjo. It severely sours fans if it is just for play though. Had this thing not happened, I would have watched the conference for the likely Ori 2 and the off-chance Microsoft has something else in the oven that I am interested in. Now, I just cannot bring it over myself to watch it and will sleep instead.

I think that's because Ms only recently opened up the xbone wireless tech to partners, so for them, it's like new.

What if it's a Banjo kart racing game in the mold of Diddy Kong Racing? Would you be pissed or okay with that?

It? Rare has now clearly stated there is no "it". We will just see the pirate stuff and nothing else from them.

Hot damn. I "log in" to the world wide web and find that this thread is almost at 6000 posts. The hype is real!

I messed around with Game Pass last night and it has me hoping that they give us some more details about the service at E3. My dream prediction is that we'll get OG Xbox games and they'll all be available via Game Pass.

SOT will probably get significant stage time and played live. I do think they will at least show a teaser of their secondary project that Shinobi602 said they have. There is no way Rare is just there for SOT. Too many hints.

Even the boss of the studio himself made absolutely clear they are at E3 just for SoT. Maybe under different circumstances, this could be play to surprise people, but this comes as a direct response to people being hyped by the Banjo backpack and rhymes. It would be absolutely crazy to first hype it (from your argument: deliberately!) then deny it twice and clearly, then to still show something off. This just wouldn't make any sense whatsoever.

scorpio in a few days
time to get my preordering fingers ready

I'M READY!! Just not sure where I wanna pre-order. For the Xbox One launch, Gamestop had some neat T-shirts and swag to give away. But... I also need to spend $400 at Best Buy this year to maintain my "Elite" status and keep free shipping. Decisions decisions...

I do think Rare must have something else in the works besides SoT. There's no way the entire studio has been working on nothing but SoT these last three years. I refuse to believe that. They even have an incubation team there, so I'm sure they have already thought up of something by now.

Whether they show what this second project is at E3 or not is an entirely different story though.

So, after reading the latest Halo Waypoint post last night I don't think Halo Wars 2 DLC is going to be shown during the show. The post said halo wars 2 fans will wanna tune in to the live at e3 show for exclusive halo wars 2 news.
