Phil Spencer: "Not a fan of marketing deals with exclusive content"

A game coming to a console first is fine, especially for a smaller developer who may need some help getting launched.

Shit like what Bungie does though... Yeah, that needs to stop.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
Shit like maps 30 days earlier never really bugged me but the destiny stuff is on a totally different level. The purple armors are fine but exotic weapons and stikes that never making it over is insane.

But it works, I'm getting it on PS4 because it has the extras so guess they know what they are doing.

This dude is full of shit, if he could still get the deals like exclusive fifa stuff and destiny strikes he'd be all over it. But the best he can get is "launch exclusive" which is holding back a product completely.

What the fuck.

So what's all the "launch exclusive" fuckery that happened in their press conference about?

Not to mention the fact of releasing games on your own shop/OS just to promote it. Which imho is even worse since it's locking entire games.

I don't think it's good for our industry if we got into a point where people are holding back the technical innovation of game developers based on a marketing deal.
Says the guy with a bunch of third party exclusive titles for Xbox (and sometimes PC). Right.

When did he decide this was the case? You know, since their exclusive FIFA marketing deal included this

I'm struggling to remember any Msoft exclusive content deals since Phil took over. I also remember that Rise of the Tomb Raider, which kind of goes against this sentiment?

People change I guess. I have to imagine they would have no trouble getting exclusive content deals if they want them.

This is a bullshit policy by both MS and Sony.

Anyone in MS calling out Sony for this is a serious case of pot and kettle though.

Was anyone at Sony stupid enough to say this last gen?

Not that he is wrong, but of course he only thinks that way now that he is on the "losing" side of these deals.

Man, this guy is so full of shit.

But paying to keep games off another platform for limited time is ok, right Phil?

After doing it for the past few years..

Rise of the Tomb Raider??

"console launch exclusive"

Come on Phil, now because Xbox isn't leading he is saying all this. Curious to see what the Anthem deal looks like.

What a load of complete bollocks. Microsoft kept entire games off other systems - and they happily did exclusive DLC / skin deals etc in the past. It's getting really annoying how obvious it is that 'good guy Phil' is just a pr face putting a good polish on a bad situation.

Coming from the guy who decided that it would be much easier to just buy Tomb Raider for a year rather than develop their own Uncharted competitor.

They were basically known for this kind of shit last generation.

He'd rather hold entire games back from other consoles for months or an entire year.
Cool.

lol. somebody should count how often "exclusive" in all its forms in mentioned in the Microsoft conference vs. how often it is mentioned in Sonys conference.

To those saying console exclusives are the same thing are completely missing what this is about. You're looking at locking away pieces of content you've basically paid for for a full year solely because of some marketing deals. Console exclusives will always be a thing, but you haven't bought those games yet.

Got to chuckle - he reminds me of the bloke in the pub sketch for The Fast Show who just keeps changing opinion to agree with his mates.
