Any potty training advice?

We are super late, by most standards I assume as my son just turned 3 and he isn't trained yet. We tried this weekend but he freaked out, had no interest, and didn't want to push to hard since he has a history of constipation.

My 2nd, is 2 months old and now I fear with our attention and time split between 2 babies, we are way behind on potty training.

Any help?

Has anyone adopted here? My wife and I are adopting a child and we should get him next month, he is 9 and we are really excited to finally be parents. Poor kid has had a rough fucking life with a meth addict mom and alcoholic dad who physically and mentally abused him and his siblings, he's been in foster care since he was 5. We've been in this process since march of last year and it's been exhausting. We are just ready to get him and care for him after all he's been through.

Our daughter is about 2 and a half, we started training her a couple of months ago. When it comes to pissing she's great. She can go all day without a nappy and will tell us that she needs to go. She'll sit on any toilet, public or whatever. She still craps herself though. Just refuses to shit on a toilet or potty. I'm not concerned though, I think this is one of those things that just comes with time and you need to be patient with.

The way we did it was to just let her run about the house without wearing anything on her lower half. No nappy or trousers or anything. She pissed on the floor once or twice, but then she learned to hold it in. We could tell when she needed to go because she'd start dancing and grabbing herself, so we'd just lift her and sit her on the potty. Didn't take long before she started peeing comfortably. We reward her with a sticker each time which she likes.

Basically just stop putting nappies on until it's bed time or if you're going out somewhere and won't be near a toilet for a while. They're going to have accidents but don't get mad at them, it's to be expected. Just praise the hell out of them when they do go.

new OT name?

My lad Leo has learnt to roll over now, he gets really frustrated that he can't crawl yet though! i think he's way too early to crawl, he's only 5 months old

Haha, which end? I have a bit in my incipient standup routine about forgetting you had beets the previous day.

The back end. :D Thankfully no blowouts yet, but my god it smells like something died in there. I've been teaching her about "pee-pee" and "poo-poo" in preparation for potty training, and the last two days have been full of gleeful, "Mama, mama! Poo-poo!" Yes, child, I know. Oh, how do I know...

And you are so right about beets. Scares the shit out of you until you remember. And how about those blueberries? That shit's the stuff of nightmares.

My daughter was at a birthday party a few months back and had some cake. I wasn't there, so I wasn't aware that the cake had green food colouring in it. Imagine the shock when I go to change her nappy and see this

I shrieked. I thought she was possessed or something.

My son was three when he finished potty training - 37-38 months. He would pee, but nothing else, just flat refusal, and then one day he just decided it was time, I guess. Like magic. He also had a history of constipation and for him it took learning that he could go and that it felt better, and then he taught himself.

We had some early success with peeing just before my daughter turned three, but then nothing. So far no matter what we do she just has no interest in it at all. She's going to be four in October and I'm starting to think she's going to never learn. Next week I'm going to just let her run around without any pants on and try that, again. She's ridiculously stubborn and if she doesn't want to do something she'll battle you until you're both crying. At this point though we've tried pretty much everything and she just doesn't want too.

My daughter just turned four and is similar. We've tried EVERYTHING. She understands, she can go, she just refuses half the time, and if we put her in underpants, she just pees immediately and I swear it feels purposeful. We asked the doctor last week and doc says that with "bright and stubborn" kids, especially girls, this is very common. They know they can get away with it so they do. Not especially heartening in terms of dealing with it, but nice to know it's normal.

Notes:
- learn ninja magic
- avoid spicy foods with indigestible ingredients
-- try to forget the word 'blowout' for awhile, again
- try to remember the intake of vivid colours
- poop oh god the poop

Dude, congrats! And don't stress. At this age it's like anything else: you just roll with it.

Yeah, not stressed. Just concerned I should be worrying more :p. Aside from a car seat, think we have most of the things we'll need for a few weeks at least. Still crafting the perfect Facebook announcement to try and convince people I'm going to be a terrible parent or am simply a terrible person in general.

Or do what I did and hit the creakiest floorboard in the house. My son sat up in his crib and looked right through me with an exhausted 1000 yard stare. I froze mid stride and stood there for what felt like an eternity. In reality it wasn't quite 15 minutes, motionless, in the dark, trying my hardest to stay awake and not shift my weight which would cause the floorboards to creak more. The muscles in my legs were on fire by the time I felt he was asleep enough before I dared to move again.

Of course now that he's older I can just pick him up and move him around without him waking. I checked on him the other night and noticed he had pooped a little in his training pants. I picked him up, walked into the nursery, changed his underwear, and put him back to bed without him waking.

In my experience spicy foods aren't a problem. My son LOVES spicy foods and has since he started eating solids. I mean it all depends on the kid's constitution but it isn't a hard rule like the others on your list.

That's about when we started and it went... relatively smoothly? Ended up going in stages, first peeing in the potty, then poo, then switching to undies during the day, then no diapers overnight even. Used stickers as a reward, working up to a trip to go get ice cream once she collected enough stickers. We read plenty of books to her about going potty, talked about how big kids go potty, tried to avoid directly comparing her progress of that of her friends of the same age.

We weren't the latest out of her classmates or anything like that either. So I wouldn't worry too much, but it's probably time to start focusing on it.

Now THAT'S like having the devil in her butt. Satan's diaper. Wow.

Speaking of Facebook announcements... I guess I can drop this here now since I posted last night. It's in the pre-production phase currently, but we expect to go gold in Dec.

Congratulations! Two can be so much fun, especially when the oldest does something super sweet to/for the newest.

Our daughter is three today and has asked to go to an Indian restaurant for her birthday meal. She's a korma fan mostly, but always tries the spicier curries and lime pickle...

(Entirely off topic - phone keyboard replaced 'spicier curries' with 'Soviet cuties'...)

That's nothing. I once forgot our son had been eating beetroot. It looked like he was shitting blood.

Welp. My son is set to be born tomorrow. He's overdue, original due date was 06.09. The doctor said he had enough fluid sacs around him to keep in for another week. Going to stay overnight at the hospital tonight and he'll be induced tomorrow morning.

Okay... my boy is getting mobile a lot sooner than l planned for (crawling properly not even a week ago, now he's pulling to stand eek)... anyone got any hidden safety tips beyond the obvious? He's pretty robust but still seems too small and fragile to be tumbling from standing height (he's quite tall too).

Not sure if you are interested but they do make foam padding you can put on the floor to soften falls that double as toys. Something like this

Thick rug/foam playmat + baby jail (play yard) is an option. That's what we did for a little while, but kids learn to stand pretty well pretty quickly.

My son started pulling himself to stand before he could crawl. It really concerned his physical therapist too since that's apparently an issue with premature babies. Still,
kids are more robust than you expect. As long as he doesn't hit his head on sharp corners he should be (relatively!) OK. If you're still concerned you could make sure the area he's playing in is carpeted or use padded play mats like others have posted. As much as it sucks, sometimes you have to let kids fall down. Just remember: baby proofing can get really expensive and it's not necessary to coat the inside of your house with Nerf.

So we've now had our second NCT class (meet other soon to be parents, get advice and talk about stuff with a midwife, ask questions about pre natal, post natal, birth, labour etc). Seem a normal bunch!

Managed to snag loads of stuff from a friend of the wife second hand saving a fortune. eg, Cot bed, chest of drawers with a changing table on top and a nursing glider chair, new all comes in at about £1000, we paid her £200. Also got a load of other useful stuff too. The only new thing we've bought is the car seat and isofix base.

Also finally managed to redecorate the nursery after the roof leak (and had the roof replaced), so we're approaching liftoff and feeling pretty good. Still got a few bits to buy but most is in an Amazon wishlist to order in one go.

Thanks guys. We're at the hospital waiting for the Cervadil.

Good luck! A little longer in the oven!

Hello Parent-GAF. I'm a 35 year old male who is at the hospital right now waiting for induction of my first little guy. I'm excited and nervous. The nervous feeling is coming from all these things out of my control, like his health. Just like everyone else in the world, I just want him to be healthy.

This may be a stupid thought, but this is something my wife and I have been thinking about lately as we get closer to her due date. How exactly do you have a baby in a house with a cat? What I mean by that is how do you keep it from constantly being on a newborn? You can't gate a cat like you can a dog, and it can jump into anything we put a baby in that I can think of. How can my wife and baby safely nap in the living room?

We are more worried about the cat than our dog.

Can't speak for your cat, but we have a 3 month old and a cat. We worried about the same thing, especially because our cat is super snuggly. Turns out the cat just generally avoids the baby, and is really careful when they're near each other, e.g. when the baby's in my lap and kitty wants in too, the fluffy one will make a point to not step on the little human.

We still have to yell a lot and blast him with water whenever he gets in the empty crib.

Our cat is a dick at the best of times, but he's on best behaviour with the kids. He gets the run of downstairs at nighttime, but can't get upstairs so no waking them up. I can count on one hand the number of times I caught him curled up in an empty crib.

They learn very quickly, and also since they're cats, they don't actually really care about humans anyway. So all should be fine!

Historically this was definitely a concern in some communities. My wife's grandmother used to tell a story her mother told her, of how when she was born her father took the cat, put it in a sack and threw it in the river. Things were done differently 100+ years ago...

We cut out a piece of cardboard the size of the crib mattress, covered it in double sided tape, and left it in the crib for a month or so before our first child was born. It took a week or so for the cat to get up the nerve to jump in there, and then she freaked out from the tape and never went in there again.
