Didn't enjoy the game from what I've played of the Japanese version, so I'm dropping by to give you props for the OT title.

In terms of setting, characters and story telling, this game does not feel very different than Trails of Cold Steel.

Will be reviewing the game for French website Sega-Mag, I am going to take my time and finish it properly.

How's the gameplay? I'm sure I can tolerate the story and cut scenes but the gameplay will make or break this for me.

Action RPG. Think Kingdom Hearts, mixed with Star Ocean, and a little bit of Dynasty Warriors. Can get repetitive after a while.

Alright then, embargo's up.

Valkyria Revolution is a disaster, easily the worst game i've played all year. The cutscenes are numerous, overly long and poorly directed. They encompass upwards of 70% of the game with 90% of said cutscenes blurting out the same repetitive dialogue and Shakespeare references.

The gameplay is a test of patience as to how much of the same button mashing boredom one can tolerate before they give up on the game entirely. It got to a point where I was simply letting the AI have its own fun while I caught up on some reading, barely . It never evolves, it never becomes interesting or engaging, and it's tedium is stretched out over a 40 hour epic excuse of a plot. The AI is awful on both sides, though the enemy is slightly moreso with their tendency to not notice the player characters despite them being right in front of them.

The bosses are about the only time you'll ever control any of the characters aside from moving them from one goal to the next, namely because of how large their health bars are and how long it would take to beat them by letting the AI have its fun. There's a boss who is only able to be hit once every five minutes once you run out of ammo and RP (and you will run out very quickly), which grows into a tedious bore given the boss' gargantuan health bar. The final straw for me where I gave up was a two-headed snake tank where the boss' health . Neither of them are difficult nor challenging in any regarding, they're simply a malicious manner of extending this an already lengthy game to .

Performance-wise, it's an appalling mixture of stiff animation poor draw distance, and the same handful of stages recycled over and over again with slight framerate drops scattered throughout*. The sound design is equally underwhelming, utilizing a handful of quips that get increasingly grating when they're heard with every attack (which is to say every five seconds) and the less than impressive voice direction does no favors to an already mediocre script. The soundtrack's good but it deserves a much better game to accompany it.

Also, this is minor in the grand scheme of the terrible gameplay and story but despite the setting being clearly inspired by the industrial revolution, the game never takes advantage of the setting to say anything meaningful about it like Valkyria Chronicles did with its WWII inspiration a la concentration camps.

So yeah, I wasn't a fan. Full thoughts will be in the review proper. Short version: Even if you're a hardcore Valkyria fan, you may as well skip it. 2017 has so many amazing games(including games by ATLUS/SEGA) that are worth your time and money. This is not one of them.

*Brief note: I played the Vita version for review so it's possible issues like the framerate, visuals and general performance are improved on the home console release.

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
Am so glad I checked out the import thread and canceled my pre-order yesterday. Ordered Tokyo Xanadu instead.

I think this is going to be one of those instances where I have to just ignore reviews and impressions, because I keep watching YouTube gameplay videos and this looks right up my alley.

Does it have dual audio? Coming off of Shadows of Valentia, I'm not really feeling the English voice acting here.

Yeah, it's dual audio.

The game seemingly has no PS4 Pro enhancements, sadly, judging by the lack of an icon on the back of the case.

I mean, why would a Vita game have PS4 Pro enhancements? It's obvious that Vita became the lead platform and that PS4/Xbone are the ports.

Because it's a PS4 game? It was announced for PS4 only originally, the Vita port announcement came later. Regardless, every other game I've bought for PS4 after the Pro released has had Pro enhancement, except for Persona 5 and Yakuza 0 (which is understandable since the Japanese versions came out before the Pro released).

So uh, what is it a reference to?
Final boss track in Ao no Kiseki/Trails of Azure is Azure Arbitrator. You can even search for it on Apple Music or Amazon music. Spotify too probably.

EDIT: I was beaten to the punch anyway (not surprising) but hell, maybe it'll get someone who missed the initial replies, or at least the one that linked to the song specifically.

No seriously, compare the 2015 demo to the 2017 retail product. Downgradeatons left and right in what were clearly downgrades for the Vita that carried into the console versions.

That's not really relevant. Other small budget Japanese games with Vita versions like Akiba's Beat, Fate Extella, Atelier Firis etc. have PS4 Pro enhancements, there's no reason they couldn't at least bump up the resolution or something if they didn't think it could hit a stable 60FPS.

While the PS4 version was compromised for the Vita, the Vita version of the game is the equivalent of taking graphic sliders and moving them as close to zero as possible to make sure the game was playable (and it's missing the game's signature graphic filter). So it stands to reason that PS4 was still the base platform.

Not like it matters though, the downgrades really hurt fans of both platforms. PS4 players got a game with PS3 animations, textures, and that annoying as hell battle wheel that blocks the view of the battlefield, and Vita players got a game with graphic slider syndrome. Very definition of chasing two rabbits.

EDIT: Looking at the footage now, the game actually looks more consistent with the simple colors on Vita somehow lol. But the hit effects...

Do we know how many years before the events of the first Valkyria this game takes place?

Are there any references to the first Valkyria's lore?

I updated the OP to be a bit more clear on that front. Separate universes, so no references. It was their intention to create a large continuous world starting from this game in the beginning, completely separate from Chronicles.

I recommend reading my amateur interview translations in the OP, since it gives insight to their thought process before the mistake of releasing a bad demo caught up to them.

Yes, English and Japanese audio with English subtitles.

First impressions after a couple of hours and chapters: this is not a bad game. I'm not in love, but I'm engaged. The cutscenes are overly long and poorly done, but the story is interesting so far and the graphics and art direction are lovely.
I don't want to make a direct comparison, but I'm thinking of it like a Musou spinoff - not as good as Dragon Quest Heroes, but much better than Berserk. The biggest issue I have so far is that there are a lot of little systems and the low difficulty (so far) has given me little reason to engage them, and as such I don't really know what's important, effective, or what I want to pursue. Will read the web manual at some point.

It's entirely skippable, but is not the dumpster fire it's being made out to be. It's not broken or unpolished; it's technically sound and even gorgeous at points - its most egregious flaw is not being Valkyria Chronicles, and that includes how you feel like you should play it - it takes an adjustment.

There are some interesting things here I would love to see inform a "Chronicles" game in this world, or a proper VC4: the world feels alive, the motivations are less black and white - as of now, I don't feel like the good guys are particularly good at all. It has a framing story like Final Fantasy Tactics and I'm interested to see the story play out. The prologue is very cutscene heavy - about 15 minutes of gameplay in the first 1hr 15, but it's picked up since chapter 1, including non-story free missions you can do whenever as often as you'd like.

I miss the Sakimoto soundtrack, but Mitsuda's score is strong and feels appropriate for a "gaiden". He shows a lot of respect to the Sakimoto's tones and instrumentation, but is confident to take them to different places. I might have preferred some lietmotifs from the original carry over, but it doesn't feel at odds with the rest of the series.
I would love to see a collaboration in the future.

I'll post more if I get any further.

PROTIP: The BGM volume is set way to low by default at 50. Setting to 100 improved the mix and my enjoyment considerably.

Is it possible to replay a mission? I got an A and I want to go for an S (this game is extremely easy so why not?). I'm looking in the history book and I see the picture for Operation Recapture Molda, it has an A on it, but I can't find a way to actually select it. Is it impossible?

Thank you for that, just fixed it. Much better. The music is glorious.

This game is kind of a hot mess but I like it.

The only one "Herp Derp"ing here is you with that /V/-quality post.

This game does have a lot of style.

I wish the Now Loading... screen wasn't so prevalent all of the time. Ugh.

Valkyria '06 Confirmed.

Is there any way to recover lost terrain ?

I lost half of Ipseria because the game threw three battles at me at the same time.

I didn't attempt any mission retries, but I would assume it only lets you replay story missions on NG+, just like VC1.

There is at least one boss that is pretty much broken in terms of design, where you literally can't point the camera high enough to hit it. You'll know it when you see it.
