Nvidia GTX 1060 Overtakes 970 as most common GPU on Steam

Not surprised. There are a lot of laptops with GTX 1060s in the sweet spot of $1100-$1400. Fittingly, my laptop with a GTX 1060 that (might) replace my desktop with a GTX 970 is arriving today.

Depends on how much you pay for electricity.

You could get certain "crypto currency" by doing certain calculations.
Shockingly, there are people who are ready to pay for it (apparently in hope to sell it at a higher price)

I lives in a dorm with free electricity
That is not the case anymore.
Now I'm back home. We have solar panels on the roof. "free electricity"

But I'm still not sure if one card to run is efficient with the rest of the pc have to run, too.
On the other hand my pc is on most of the time anyway.

Can you still browse and do normal stuff while mining?
Have a good site i should read?
I know my card is best for etherum and sucks for bitcoins

Considering the comments on various forums and YT it seems bizarre that only 13% of Steam users appear to have a GPU better than the standard PS4's.

Makes all the "I run my games at 1440p/ULTRA/60fps" comments a little amusing since very few people seem to have hardware capable of getting anywhere near that.

ya with everything on low.

You're overestimating GTA V. http://www.gamersnexus.net/game-bench/1905-gta-v-pc-fps-benchmark-graphics-cards

High 4k is definitely possible on an overclocked 1060 at the framerate he's claiming.

How do you get 13%? I just added a couple of GPUs and I'm already at 15%. It's much higher than 13%. Even if it was 13%, that could still be a lot of people.

I would think that the percentage of people with high-end GPUs is pretty high in an enthusiast forum like NeoGAF. Most of the people on that survey just play games now and then.

And........it's much higher than 13%.

Still go the 970 here.

Not planning on upgrading until the 11 series comes out. i usually upgrade every other gen. My last GPU was a 680.

What's the most bang for your buck video card right now?

Looking to upgrade my video card that's like 5 years old. Don't have a 4K TV or monitor.

Yeah i got my 1070 gamerock for 380 euro including gears of war 4
Good investment

Not sure tho, if i should mine etherum.
Is it really worth it?

If your PC is somewhere you don't mind the GPU fans cranking 24/7, for sure. For someone new, I would recommend using NiceHash to mine, it automatically switches currencies based on what's giving the best value.

970 is the best graphics card I've owned. It runs so cool, so well and so silent. It just makes me really happy that I've gotten so much value and fun out of it.

While not the most powerful, there is something great about buying the best price to performance tech as opposed to the diminishing returns cutting edge tech.

1060 sounds like that it's the best value for money in its own generation so it makes perfect sense that a lot of people who want the most for their money would go towards it.

I was just gonna ask why is the 1070 out of stock every where and now I now. Haha, that's actually a good thing though, because now I won't be tempted to spend the money.

Sold rx 480 for double the price I bought it, and got a new classy case and the 6 gb Gaming X version of this card which is arriving today. I thought about 1070 but the games I play even today work well on my old EVGA GTX 760 SC. Also I need to upgrade my monitor before I go 1070 or Vega level.

Polaris overclocked like a dream though, so much bios customization. I hope Vega follow and don't lock everything like Nvida.

My 970 is definitely getting long in the tooth. Would have gone for a 1070 but the Nvidia's pricing in my country was completely bonkers. I'm hoping the 1170 will be somewhat reasonably priced but not very hopeful. Will buy one anyway because an upgrade is required now.

the 1070 gamerock is the most quiet GPU i ever had

What? 13%?

JUST looking at DX12 Nvidia cards, so no DX11 cards and ONLY Nvidia, no AMD cards gives me about 30% of the overall Steam user base with equal or better than base PS4 GPU's. Likely that percentage is closer to 50+% when taking AMD and DX 11 GPU's into account.

That's a LOT of people. I woudl estimate comprable numbers to PS4's + Xbones combined especially when taking the PC gaming worldl outside Seam into account.

Let's just imagine that you're right (you're not, but let's imagine). Take 13% of any of those numbers

adsdasdsa.jpg

That's at least 1.8 million people. You're in a forum with 190 thousand people.

As mentioned the percentage is probably closer to 50%. The slide is tlaking about active monthly players, not the overall size of the Steam active user base, which is MUCH larger.

A bit off topic but I have a question. Which one of these cards is recommended if I wanted to get a Gaming PC to play mostly Multiplats on my 4K tv @60fps in my game room?

The best one you can afford. Native 4K@60 fps and high settings is a tall order for any system. I'd say a 1070 at minimum.

I'm seriously thinking about replacing my GTX970 with a GTX1080. However, I don't "need" one yet and I can lower the resolution if I absolutely have to. I will probably get the GTX1170 if the price is reasonable next year. As long my next GPU has over 2x the teraflop power, I should be fine for the next 2-3 years. The 970 has served me well so far.

Neither the 970 nor the 1060, IMHO.

The 1070 does well @ 1440p at mostly very high ro ultra @ 60 FPS in msot games, while you can probably get closer to 1800p or so at mediun/high quality settings at 60 FPS in most games.

That would be my entry point for "4K" TV gaming. That is, a picture that will look more detailed and crisper on a 4K TV at usual TV viewing distances over 1080p, while not necessarily being native 4K.

Lots of games are including in-game resolution scalers, dynamic resolution support, sparse/checkerboard rendering options, etc, so hopefully, most games will be easy to tailor to a good level fo image quality and performance on PC for 4K TV gaming and at 60 FPS on something like a 1070.

IF you absolutley must have full 4K (and I would relaly only personally insist on this if playing ona 4K monitor, not a TV fromt he couch, then you ar elooking at the 1080 or 1080ti if you want 60 FPS, and even then you might have to compromise some graphics settings down from very high to high or medium. Native 4K is brutal, especially on anything with a lot of per pixel effects and that doesn't feature optimizations like dynamic resolution or checkerboard rendering.

But if you are willign to compromise graphics settings ot console levels, you should eb able to get 4K or close to it at 60 FPS on most titles with a 1070 or better.

Very happy with my 1060 6GB.

Can't see myself getting a 4K display anytime soon. Happy with my 2008 1080p Samsung.

Cheaper, efficient power consumption, most of all, less coil whine noise.

I absolutely hate my 970 with a passion. I can't wait until I upgrade from this pos graphics card.

Appreciate the info!! Yea 4K res isn’t necessarily a must, it’s just that it’ll be a 4K tv that I’m hooking the tower up to potentially. So if I can scale it to 1440p to get ultra settings at 60fps then I’m good with that! I’ll look into a 1070 then.

lol more people play on intel graphics than AMD.

i really hope AMD can get it together. i love my 1070 but nvidia need serious competition.

Add me to the list of 970 owners. I'm debating upgrading this year, because I just dumped a bunch of money into upgrading from an i5-3570K to a Ryzen 1600X, but XCOM 2 and the paltry amount of RAM the 970 has make me think about it more than I'd like to. I only play at 1080p, but on a 32in TV, so I feel like more GPU horsepower and RAM would be nice.

If the 970 had 6GB of RAM, I wouldn't even be thinking about upgrading.

Crossing my fingers that AMD pulls out a 1070 competitor close to the 970's original price point. That would get Nvidia sweating a bit.

1080Ti not even on the list

1060 is a great card. Had one as a temporary card while i was waiting on the Ti to release.

That was surprisingly fast, I'm not surprised that it was the 1060 that surpassed it, it's a great card and it seems like the best bang for your buck cards are always #1.

Glad I was able to snag a 1070 before prices started driving upwards. Upgraded from a 7970 and loving the power. Can't wait to try out DOOM tonight.

When did the 1070 prices start to go up?
Didnt that card start at like 100000 million dollars.
Maybe i can pull a quick undercut.

P.S 1070 owner here, actually hoping Volta takes its time coming out so i can save up for the 1170 or 2070 whatever they call it.

Xbox One X really is a monster at only $499 beating many people's rigs and also beating the most popular GPU used in people's PC's

Great reign for a great card. Still rocking my 970 with an easy OC to 980 levels. Going to keep with it until the next big Nvidia line hits.
