Ars: Early tests show bizarre issues with Nintendo Switch voice chat app

Dude. I'm 16 and have been playing Nintendo since I was 5 years old, they're my favorite company in the world and I absolutely adore them, I'm literally a Nintendo fanboy or a Nintendo child, but what you're saying is too much.

Is this like a reverse understand x culture meme post?

I'm thinking that if wasn't for Splatoon the app probably wouldn't be releasing so soon. It clearly needs some work but the alternative is no voice chat at all and that would just make folks even angier.

No it's not.

The alternative is putting it in the damn console.

One would think there'd be a shit ton of stories about this stuff happening on xbl and psn, but there aren't. These same kids with their own smartphones with multiple social media apps.

I don't think it's actually a big risk, but Nintendo is really sensitive about it for whatever reason. This is the thing that happened a few years ago that led them to kill off Swapnote (which was like, a very limited version of a modern text messaging app):
http://kotaku.com/child-predators-were-using-nintendos-swapnote-service-1459304126

On October 31, Nintendo suddenly announced it was ending its SwapNote service for the 3DS. Nintendo said Swapnote had been "actively misused" to transmit "offensive material" among system users, including minors. Now we know how offensive and unsettling some of that material was.

Japanese newspaper Mainichi reports that charges for child pornography have also been filed against another man, aged 44, who had allegedly two girls—then aged 11 to 12—send nude photos through Swapnote, or "Itsu no Ma ni Koukan Nikki" (いつの間に交換日記) as it's called in Japan. This man, a resident of Aichi Prefecture, has allegedly confessed to the acts.
...
Nintendo released the following statement to Kotaku after being asked if these incidents lead the discontinuation of Swapnote's online support: "Nintendo stopped the SpotPass feature of Swapnote in our ongoing efforts to provide a positive experience for all consumers and limit the risk of any inappropriate activity or misuse of a service."

I'm not defending the stupid voice app, just saying why I wouldn't expect it to ever be any good

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
This one is at least excusable given you can't exactly cross those streams. The rest? Just add that shot to your OS already Nintendo.

I was going to say the same thing.

This actually makes sense. Or how about muting voice chat so you can let your folks know you are away from the mic right now.

See....being able to do basic multi tasking you could at least let them know. I assume they may see you got disconnected but still.

Yeah basically hahaha I just can't believe it. I hope it's from Nintendo employees becuase I can't believe fans can seriously give this app 5 stars.

I think Nintendo spent more money astroturfing the reviews in app stores than they did on the development of the app.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

What is a Nintendo child?

Also, that means your first Nintendo console was a GameCube??

It also runs games at higher resolution and more graphically demanding. And so far there nothing that they run in the background including voice chat. For example can you share your screenshots without leaving game on Switch?

I am just trying to think logical reason for this.
I don't think there is a logical one other than saving money. If they even saved money from this. App development isn't the cheapest thing, then again they have a partnership with Mobile companies now a days so.

One review said "I guess we'll adapt" 5 stars.

At this point in time it appears that Nintendo has no intention of allowing voice communication within Splatoon 2 on the console itself, so if the app hadn't launched in time for Splatoon 2's release, there would be no official voice functionality for the game.

So what do iPhone users do? They can either use a headset and kill their battery, or charge their battery and have awful audio.

Yeah, you can. There's no logical reason for this beyond Nintendo and DeNA wanted to partner up on some apps, at some point Nintendo decided to get DeNA to handle the Switch's online and DeNA are a mobile developer so they made a mobile app to do it.

I don't quite understand how Nintendo didn't hire on someone this time around that actually knows how to implement basic online features. You've had several generations now to think it over.

My only conclusion is that they simply do not give a fuck about online chat, or never wanted it implemented in the first place. But they are invested in their new venture into phone apps. So you get this. I mean, it is what it is I guess. Still embarrassing when you compare it to non-Nintendo consoles that came out 10-15 years ago.

Yes, and their lack of intention is the problem.

The fact is, it's not just this app "solution" that's unacceptable and behind-the-times. It's the fact that the Switch didn't launch with basic online features that have been part of other consoles for over a decade.

Goddamn it is crazy. I am going to delete this app without ever using it, and continue to party chat on PS4 while playing Switch.

You don't need a headset with the Switch either. Your phone has a microphone and both it and the Switch have speakers.

Gimme dem straws.

No! Put the straws back down, and back away from them.

The 3DS is functional without the headset, because you'd naturally be holding it up relatively close to your face in order to be playing it. This is also true of the Switch but not simultaneously true for the phone.

Now stop it.

I'd honestly rather just run up minutes by 3 or 5 way conference calling my friends then using this app.

The Switch was pretty clearly rushed to the market, that much is certain.

In a perfect world the Switch would be releasing this holiday season and Nintendo would have had a further six to nine months to polish up the system's operating system, online service, and companion app, but since Wii U fell flat on its face Nintendo didn't really have much of a choice but to release the Switch otherwise they would have had to rely on 3DS sales alone to get them through 2017.

It's a shitty situation all around. Here's hoping things improve by the time their online service launches next year.

I cant speak on DS, 3DS but I do remember this from the Vita:

https://community.playstation.com/c...eral.topic.html/a_question_aboutlis-38dI.html

Not all games allowed it, but it was possible.

Unless you meant for the Switch.

Thanks for showing me the light lol

So is it fair to call this a bulky gamer app?

"Bulky gamer headsets" needs to replace "localize Mother 3" as the thing people shout randomly at Reggie in public.

One of the more prevalent theories here is that this app was indeed designed by DeNA. They brought them on for a reason after all.

So. Not only did they opt for an incredibly cumbersome and inconvenient solution, but they managed to make it as insufferable as possible.

At this point Nintendo should've just delayed the app, Splatoon 2 or not, because even though it's a limited, beta app, it's so lacking of everything that the only thing it will generate is bad word of mouth.

Terrible decision all around.

It's not confusing. You have the true Nintendo fans like us willing to stick with them through what others perceive to be a mistake (it's not deal with it) and those willing to jump at their throats with this "criticism". Really shows you who the true fans are.

I'm a big fan of Ninty, but even I'll admit that this is starting to feel a bit unecessarily cumbersome. I'll wait until friday, when it actually launches, to make sure this is the final version meant for us. Otherwise, I was actually on board with the app if it had the following:

-Messaging system.
-Sending invites to people without them actually being online with the switch.

I had the hope that this was going to be an on the go social aspect for nintendo's online services going forward. But them tying the functionality of the app to the system having to be on, it really feels like this was originally built as an OS level app and ported to mobile devices.

That said, it's in its infancy and it still have the potential to be a really social media out for Nintendo. My dream is that they combine Miiverse with this and have it standalone (meaning without a switch needing to be on). They could lock access with having to have a (master) account activated on a switch and we'd be golden.

As it stands right now, it's pretty underwhelming. I'll use an old nexus phone i have laying around for at home chat with a bluetooth earpiece, and phone when i'm out and about,

So, doesn't seem like it's hardware that is holding all this stuff back from being on the Switch natively... yet Nintendo decide to go this route and then the app is so ham-fisted and restricting as to be next to useless.

What's genuinely going on here? Is it "protecting the kids" (?!?), or is it somehow tied to hardware? Did they somehow design the Switch and not leave enough RAM and processing power to run voice chat on the side? Seems unlikely the hardware would be as poorly designed as that.

Whatever the issue is they need to fix it. This solution is fucking bonkers. EVEN if the app gets massively improved, keeping chat open while using other apps and in sleep mode, it's still a clusterfuck. And we should ALL be screaming this at Nintendo and making it a big deal because it sort of is. The Switch is a portable console, all of this should be self contained, having a super convoluted system just to be able to play a game and hear voice chat simultaneously is just madness.

Guys, TheSpoiler was joking. At least I hope to god he was.

Nintendo...
fix....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

They seemingly changed the monthly game thing with the online service. And they're giving us 2 new Metroid games. They're clearly listening to the fanbase, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them fix some of the issues with the app.

On the other hand I doubt they'll add this functionality to the console, which is what they should really do.

It's plainly obvious that this new app draws more power than Skype or discord because it's linked to a powerful next gen system. So of course lesser powered phones will have trouble running it. Nintendo is trying their best to put us in the future and all I see is a bunch of people being mean to them. Real developers made this if you forgot.

Nintendo put me in the future to warn me this post would happen, but I was too stubborn to listen.

Now it's too late.
