Ars: Early tests show bizarre issues with Nintendo Switch voice chat app

You don't think this backwards ass solution impacted sales at all, eh?

I thought, briefly, about buying a Switch. But when I did research and found out shit like this? Nooooooooooope.

And yes you can get a consumer friendly priced device with PS4 Pro level specs. It's called a PS4 Pro. It's quite feasible at this time.

While i agree the voice stuff is dumb the Switch beside that is a pretty nice console imo and they finally have a premium looking product for once.

Also it won't affect sales much maybe a few thousand or 10 thousands but in the grand sheme of things that's nothing and Splatoon + Mario and more on the road will have people buy em like candies.

Also i do also agree with people saying their IP's kept them afloat if they did not have several big IP's they would have followed Sega's path probably. The only exeption i can find is wii and ds and the era before n64 cuz Nintendogs and Wii Sports + more were pretty big for the casual market and well they pretty much dominated the market before the n64/ps1 era.

I am a big Nintendo and Sony fan but i am not going to defend super shitty mistakes the backwards choices of Ninty always bothered me it's their games that keep me as a fan. I also have some words for Sony too but that's not relevant now.

Sorry if my post drove on a bit btw ADHD lol.

Yeah for real. Don't care about Mario. Zelda I can go take or leave, but I thought NBA2k from the Switch commercial looked like something I could get into just spur of the moment with friends at work, and then some Splatoon at home online. But all the reports about how voice chat would work combined with the left joycon problems and the dock scratching the screens stopped me.

I don't know anyone that has one, but all my gamer friends know what it is and cite the same reasons I just gave about why they don't. Putting screen protectors and scratch resistant cloth on the dock and tethering a cell phone to a tangled mess.... sorry Mario might be worth that to you but not to me or anyone I personally know.

You know the dock scratching the screens was only in a very, very, very small number of cases right? It's an example of the Internet spreading issues and making them seem widespread

Nintendo also resolved the JoyCon issue...

Why? Why not have the stats in the game? Why lock them behind an annoyancewall? Surely 'the point' of splatnet is to show you stats.

Not just stats but upcoming rotations. I'm unsure if there are elements in the game that inform you but I imagine it's for an out of game organisation thing.

JoeM86, the owner of Serebii, would be the last person to be blindly fanboy about something. And even if it were something, I'd be Pokemon.

You mean the person who manages one of the biggest databases of pokemon on the internet isn't biased towards the company that effectively owns it?
I dont like pointing fingers and designating people but you brought it up.

You too were almost consistently defending the app until we had 3 separate articles criticizing it harshly, then you told people to to wait and judge instead of hating on it, once things were official your first response was to ask people to leave feedback, which i truly respect but im yet to hear any criticism from you either, everything people speculated in that thread came true.

Do some really think the exaggeration in these thread are helpful or funny in any way, especially in an unnecessary heated thread like this (some people are a bit weird here). If these are the people who normally use voice chat it is no wonder that most people think that voice chat with strangers is toxic. :D

There are probably issues with the beta voice chat solution for some people, but there is an feedback button in the (beta-)app itself. Use it! I am sure widespread complains will be targeted.

Console specific voice chat seems not to be a big thing these days anyway. All people I know that use PS4/XOne never use voice chat with strangers (all had very bad experiences with voice chat, especially the girls). For party chat they mostly use discord or skype on phones/tablets, because it is more convenient solution to talk to friends, because many have friends with a console from a different company :D

Console chats only allow friends with the same console, thats so 10 years ago solution. On PC almost no one use the in-game voice chat of games but discord or skype. I think Nintendo is here on the right way with outsourcing the voice chat to the phone.

It already uses a 4310mAh battery, which is larger than most phones and can hold the Tegra X1 at full power in handheld mode for about 3 hours, PS4 Pro level specs would be impossible with such a battery. And if you want even more raw numbers, the PS4 Pro uses about 150W when playing a game, while the Switch in handheld mode is something like 10W.

This is exactly why everybody expected them to go with the newer generation of Tegra.

Theres an odd lobby making system that font properly follow,
You can check your stats and buy some clothes.
Note that the app works on a game per game basis, which means the dev has to add these features themselves (or nintendo does it i dunno) but it has to be specifically added

It's snappy and the Splatnet is incredible/QUOTE]
I see. So it looks like as companion app, it's alright. It's the convoluted voice chat being a part of the app that's ruined it...

PS4 Pro costs $400 and is specifically a home console, while the Switch itself is, at its core, a handheld.

Look how packed the Switch itself is, and it's already pretty large for a portable device:

With how barebones the OS is and how it has 750mb and a CPU core dedicated to it, this isn't even a technical/resource decision. This is someone in Nintendo thinking off-loading all this stuff to a phone is a really good idea and forcing that decision through.

Never heard of it so I had to look it up.

So you're telling me this JoeM86 guy, who runs a Pokémon website, and is in this topic downplaying Switch problems, has no stake in this? Really?

Wow. It would have been better if you didn't mention that. Now it's just comical.

The Vita has voice chat. I think some games on DS had voice chat. This isn't about system power but differation between the Switch and PS4/Xbox One and to get people invested in the companion app.

None of that is really a problem but the app is surprisingly undercooked. It will be better, but for now it is strange.

I've been criticising the app... I've just been saying the extension of that criticism that has happened is ridiculous.

Discord and Twitch Messenger (aka Curse) should use this bullshit and market directly to Splatoon 2 players. They are much easier and more convenient anyway.

Seriously what sort of argument are you trying to prove?

oh come on it's obvious. If it wasn't for Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola wouldn't be anymore.

While true and i would have picked some other things too, they also have huge third party releases wich helps em alot too. Nintendo mostly survives and does very good with their own IP's mostly and some third party here and there.

If you are insinuating that Switch is not running Tegra at full power because it's downclocked then you're foolish. They downclocked it because in other hardware it will start to over heat and make the game bog down. Nintendo downclocked it to the point that will never happen.

Id take Nintendos Tegra implementation over an unstable one.

How is this more convenient than using the integrated PS4 party chat? You can manage game invites and join/watch friends from there, and talk to them even if they're playing other games. Pretty sure some games even automatically group you up depending on the system level voice chat you're in. How is using Skype more practical?

Edit: Ah, might've be a joke post. Whoops.

I mean, we know Nintendo is absolutely incompetent in regards to anything OS related especially if you throw internet into the mix but this is just sad even for Nintendo.

Pretty much everyone was positive about Nintendo with the Switch until this app, now they've changed their mind about Nintendo making the right decisions with the Switch and claim they're making poor ones?

No. That's a ridiculous notion just because of this.

I don't think anyone was ever positive about their online plans. They've been lousy from the getgo, and as more information is released, it just gets worse.

You can only chat with friends who own the same console with console specific chats? This is a very backward these days where games with online cross-play become more widespread (not on PS4 for now, but Sony will eventually allow it). Console specific chats will not be a thing in a few years anyway.

I wonder if discord could get an app for Switch...

Also, I better not be paying for something like this in the future :/ 20 dollars a year isn't worth it at all. I don't plan on using chat but this is too much.

Atleast it's not the full 50 bucks that would have been a huge disaster. But i would probably paid it.... I need my Splatoon fix:/ so i am happy with 20 i expected worse price wise.

But for the service currently available it's crap indeed, and not worth 20 bucks.

Why isn't the app on the switch anyway?
Not enough system resources left?
I know this post has been responded to and is a few hours old, but the Xbox 360 has 8-person cross-game party chat with ~30MB of RAM available (out of 512MB total) to the *entire* system OS while playing a game. The CPU usage is more or less proportional.

For comparison's sake, the new 3DS dedicates an entire 804 MHz CPU core (1 of 4) and 64MB of RAM to its OS. So the 360, both by percentage and the actual numbers dedicates less to its OS than the n3DS (possibly even the OG 3DS), and only a fraction of that is used by party chat. The freaking Vita can even do it. The Switch has drastically more resources available to its OS than any of those consoles. So it's absolutely not a technical issue.

With how barebones the OS is and how it has 750mb and a CPU core dedicated to it, this isn't even a technical/resource decision. This is someone in Nintendo thinking off-loading all this stuff to a phone is a really good idea and forcing that decision through.
Exactly. You're talking about 30 times more RAM than the 360 OS (nearly 1.5 times the RAM of the *entire* 360) and waaaaay more computing cycles.

Yah this doesn't seem like it's done being developed. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but oh boy. Good thing I don't really use voice chat.

Be calm, remember many "stability" updates are coming

What's the best that we can hope for? You don't lose connection if you get a notification or your phone goes into sleep mode?

We're still going to be stuck with this shitty phone setup with cords running everywhere.

The cords running everywhere is for the people who insist on playing handheld mode with game and voice going to headphones.

Im not excusing the stupidity of this app, because this should t even be an issue period. But I've always used voice chat with head phone and game volume coming through speakers so this doesn't add any more wires than I'd already have.

People with their speakers on in the background are a real annoyance to other players due to the echo, nobody ever complained to you?

You think this backlash now is bad? Just wait a few days starting tonight when people will actually try to use the app with Splatoon 2.

And if you think to yourself that people will just enjoy Splatoon 2 and everybody will forget about the app and this will go away, that says actually more about how this app has no reason to exists whatsoever.

I'm still utterly baffled as to why we don't at least have Messaging/Game Invites/Game Joining on the Switch OS. The Wii U did 2/3 of those things (granted, messaging was tied to the slow Miiverse app, but still). How did they step back from the Wii I'd infrastructure of all things?

It's snappy and the Splatnet is incredible

PS4 Pro isn't a portable device...

No. I think the voice chat here is a mis-step. I only find the exaggerations and hottakes to be ridiculous.

I also don't blindly buy things from certain companies just because.

Lmao don't you run a Pokémon site? Who would've guessed you would be staunchly defending Nintendo's asinine decision making.
