Senate healthcare repeal bill fails - Collins, Murkowski, and McCain voted no

Collins and Murkowski also expended a lot of political capital doing all this, their re-elections are on the line while McCain knows hes on his way out lol

Murkowski's election isn't till 2022, she ain't worried. Collins is from Maine and a "moderate darling". If anything her actions here cement her election, she gets goodwill from both parties.

Lmao the gall of people. They're calling him selfish when they think they don't want to pay for other people's health insurance (except that's what health insurance is).

Oh and it strikes me as off that the people that bitch the most about Obamacare are those in states that didn't expand Medicaid...you know, Republican states.

I live in an R state. My Governor, Senators, and House member all wanted this pass. We've had Christian retirement homes post op-eds about how they will no longer be able to function at capacity if this bill passed. The 2 medical companies that operate in state have come out against it. It still has support here. I have no clue how.

You can be glad that McCain voted the way he did without thinking he's a progressive hero.

There have been more people in this thread complaining about the left glorifying Republicans than there have been posters glorifying McCain, and it's not been close.

3 Republicans and 48 Democrats let the American people down. As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal. Watch!

And of course he doesn't want to try and fix the ACA, just see how he can hurt people even more.

What an ass.

I dunno, I just really think it's pathetic McCain is seemingly getting all the credit (besides you know, democrats and the people), who was happy playing these games for so long, and not GOP women like Susan Collins and Murkowiski, with their unwavering fuck no's.

Yeah. Didn't one of them have Trump outright threatened to fuck with her state (withhold funding or something) if she voted no? Those are the people who truly stood up for what they believe. McCain only did so cause he has nothing to lose and it very well may be more to save his fellow senators who were in a damned if they did, damned if they didn't situation then voting his conscience.

Granted, I'm glad he did vote no but I'm not sure he really was the biggest hero here.

There is something profoundly awful about this.

There is someone who worked to expose segregation in their 20s, worked to better healthcare and education in a state in their 30s, got millions of poor children healthcare in their 40s, did quite a good deal of charity work in their 50s, and served the country as a senator and as secretary of state in their 50s going into 60s. This person, however, will be forever hated by you, while you laud the actual enemy as a war hero.

And because of a single ban message on an online forum, you did not vote against the current state of affairs or for a better future, and you have the gall to come in now and talk about how this forum doesn't deserve this 'war hero' who is neither a progressive nor an ally?

Quite flabbergasting.

This post is a good post.

The GOP controls the entirety of the government and has quite literally accomplished nothing.

The level of gridlock despite having zero roadblocks of any kind is fucking absurd. Never seen anything like it.

The GOP's ability to trip over it's own dick is legit amazing.
Their greatest accomplishment is the SC seat that they literally stole. I don't even think that they originally intended to steal it since Clinton looked like a lock back in those days but the deed was done and I'm sure that they know that they'll pay for it dearly down the road.

Sadly folks gonna prop him up as a savior simply for being slightly less evil than usual.

McCain's voting record is trash and he's trash for it. One obvious "right thing" vote doesn't absolve him of his political lifetime of being a pos. Like he's going to go right back to getting in line with Republicans on everything like he ALWAYS fucking does.

It's so damn easy being a Republican politician in this country. I swear.

Trump should take note, if he wants to be worshipped just do one slightly less evil thing and watch everyone sing your praises and ignore your record of fuckery.

We are not living in a black and white world.
One can call someone an asshole for doing shitty stuff and praise and thank that same person for doing something right.

If I was about to get murdered by someone and I got saved by a rapist, I would still call him scum for being a rapist but also still thank him for not letting that man murder me.

Yeah. History will be kinder to McCain than he really deserves. It's hopeless romance that heaps praise on him now, conveniently forgetting all of the awful things he's said and done.

In his long history in politics, he has also been on the right side of history. He's done the right thing plenty of times. In fact, the worse hatred of him has come primarily from the GOP. Remember when McCain's adoptive daughter was "proof that he was being unfaithful with his wife?" Just so happens that that daughter wasn't white, mind. And when running against Obama, he vociferously defended him multiple times as a man he had disagreements with, but a good, Christian, American man, in the height of the birther fervor. But these are not things that one ought to be lauded for.

This is the baseline of human dignity.

McCain has so much respect from people like myself mainly because he was a war hero and POW, and as the ranking officer, demanded that everyone else be released before he was, if he ever was going to. In the response to torture of body, mind, and soul, he did the right thing, far outpacing what could ever be expected of someone in even better conditions.

At times, the glimmer of him being a good human being shines through cracks in the shit he's been up to. Maybe it's politics that's doing it. Maybe he sincerely holds these conservative beliefs and just doesn't have the wherewithal to understand their ramifications (for what it's worth, I would wager most Republicans today are like this). Most assuredly, his vote to move forward was a warning, and one that Republicans refused to heed. He wanted them ALL to work together, not drop a bill two hours before they voted on it. He blamed both sides for this as cover when he knows damn well it's the GOP's fault, and in so doing, gave the Democrats a way to be the bigger people in their response.

Or maybe he voted no for this, perhaps because his life will soon be over and it provided enough cover for the rest of the GOP to vote yes, to show their constituents that they're really all about healthcare, no really, see?

In the end, I probably prefer not to dig too deeply on this. I will not be eating crow because the long string of abuses has come to a temporary standstill once again. He deserves our respect for what he's done right, but derision for what he's done wrong, and being better at times than the majority of the GOP -- who, I might add, have descended into Christianofascism -- is not enough to earn more than the modicum of respect he's earned in other ways.

Awesome post. I don't agree with everything, but I think you hit the nail on the head with most of it and especially with the bolded.

@realDonaldTrump

If Republicans are going to pass great future legislation in the Senate, they must immediately go to a 51 vote majority, not senseless 60...

Its up!

He's just going to use the time to blame democrats and the republicans that voted against it. He can never take responsibility for a failure so he knows he needs to start the blame game right away to control the narrative.

Remember how Obama actually tried selling the ACA while it was being drafted? How he even went as far as to going to a Republican retreat to try to get votes for it? Fucking Trump has done nothing to get this bill to pass and he should be the last person to blame anyone because he didn't want to put the work in.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
We are all relieved that McCain did the right thing. Relieved and grateful, but this isn't a fucking game. These decisions should NEVER be about dramatic theatrics or portending to curtail principles for personal vendettas or spite.

Demonizing GAF members for having understandably justifiable fears for their future and the future of their loved ones spiraling into a potential hopeless and dark future dealing was understandable. McCain did the right thing, but have some perspective and its natural the reactions of heightened emotions are at play.

The forum has shown an outcry of support for McCain since the vote, stop with the demand for vindication. The GOP held American lives captive, demonize them, not the victims.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

This right here!

I was very worried about this.

I didn't expect McCain to put out his hand and steal McConnell's soul like that.

I don't forgive the things McCain has done, but that's for another day. If this is what he leaves us with, I can be done with it.

He's so fucking dumb, and yes I realize its redundant saying this over and over.

Dipshit has absolutely no ability to consider the long term impact of actions. Sure, go to a 51 vote majority when it wouldn't have saved them this time, and watch Republican tears next time Democrats have a majority.

This is exactly like when the A+ Honor Roll student gets no recognition because "of course they do well" but the kid that smells like piss and eats boogers gets a standing ovation for doing one thing right and being "most improved".

The gulf in leadership should be abundantly clear. When the ACA was near the finish line he was doing town halls, hosting GOP lawmakers, on the speech trail and helping whip votes. He was steering discussion by using the office which gave enough space for Reid/ Pelosi to work and do the maneuvering needed for major legislation. Trump hasn't spend s day selling a single plan outside of a few Tweets saying "get it done." Most of this loss is directly on Trump and the WH.
