NieR: Automata |OT2| You're thinking how much you want to **** this game aren't you?

Wow..

The final moments of
Ending E
, where you are
given a final choice that will permanently impact your file
is one of the most memorable moments I've ever had in a video game.

You beat "God", congrats!

Ending E got even better for me once it was pointed out that the chorus was actually everyone involved with creating the game lol

Yup, same here. The whole emotional rollercoaster from

Frustration when you realise that it's another silly bullet hell,
apprehension when it becomes increasingly difficult and you think you're not going to be able to complete it,
amusement when it keeps breaking the fourth wall as you fail,
awe when you agree to get help and see ghosts of actual players helping,
pure joy when the chorus comes on and you managed to beat it with "help",
sadness when you decided to sacrifice your save but ultimately
contentment when you realise you may help some other players.

The crazy thing here is that they are not emotions of empathy that you feel for characters in a fictional world but your own self.
Also first game I teared up due to joy and not sadness.
This makes it my GOAT as it hit the same emotional resonance as PST did to my kid self many years ago.

There's no way weight of the world doesn't stick in your head like a magnet after that whole ending sequence. It's such a better idea than how the original used its save file, it's a real powerful moment and really shows Taro at his best.

Ending C get. Watching 9S embrace the same path as Eve, seeing the 2B/E revelation, the destruction of basically every form of community. Shit got real dark. I enjoyed it but I can go no further for now. I ended up doing the entire third playthrough in a sitting after watching the second end. Due to the rumblings I've heard about E I feel like I should do All The Other Things before I press on with the true end of the game though.

Already a fantastic game, though. It's unbelieveable to me that more than a quarter of the people who get ending A stop there and don't continue onto B and the others.

According to the achievement percentages on Steam.
42.5% of players get One Battle Ends, 29.7% get A New Battle Begins.

The percentages are a bit higher on PSN (as are total users, although you can't directly see this information). I was actually surprised so many people played all the way through.
67% Ending A, 56% Ending B, ~50% Endings C/D, ~48% Ending E

I want a Toobie nendoroid to go with my two Estelles (from Trails) and my Kurisu. That makes me think now...

Estelle would probably be scandalized by 2B's outfit, but she would probably immediately want to spar with her once she saw 2B's acrobatics (especially those spear moves, Estelle would be in heaven). Estelle would totally want "magnetic" weapons of her own.

Kurisu would be intrigued by the android's brain uploading technology, and would probably be sorely tempted to dissect one for science!

Whew, finally finished with ABCDE. My thoughts on the game are really conflicted, going to need some time to digest, but overall I think the negatives outweigh the positives for me.

It does special things throughout and it's a really interesting game to analyze, enjoyed digging into the Waypoint spoilercast. I spent most of my time patiently waiting for the payoff that was promised and to be sure, the last third of route C raised my opinion of the game. Love the way it plays with UI, text, its odd sense of humor and its ability to maintain a sense of surprise throughout. The questions the game raises regarding the nature of humanity through its different lenses are meaty and thoughtful, for that alone I understand why it's so highly regarded.

But I never felt invested or engaged with the characters and found a lot of the storytelling to be heavy handed and detached, most of the emotional beats didn't hit as a result.
Pascal's story
was the best of the bunch, but even in his moment of truth I didn't hesitate. The gameplay and world is initially compelling, begins to overstay its welcome around midway through route B and was a real chore throughout route C. Replaying was tedious, most of the objectives even in route C feel like busywork. I don't think it worked as well as it could have as a device. And unpopular opinion.. the soundtrack is generally lovely and has some tracks that I'll return to, but it's also very samey and I'm good if I never hear the circus or credits music ever again after initially enjoying them.

Route E kind of encapsulated my time with the game -
"Oh, this is fucking cool, credits shooter sequence! Yoko Taro, you crazy. Huh, it's still going. This is the entire credits, isn't it. And oh, there's a gate where it gets impossible and you have to ask for help. I get it, let's just get it over with, this feels like a better idea than it turned out to be in practice. Cool idea though."

I have also just finished with E. A quick question
Is the save file actually gone gone? Or is there some trick? I made a backup just to be on the safe side. Should I reload and say to that last question?

Really? I thought this game topped the first in that department.
You're answering to me, right?
I don't know, it fit with the theme of helping and sacrifice, but I think that in Nier the in-game reason was more solid. Like, why exactly do I need to delete my saves to help someone else? As in, what would it accomplish?

Hektor

Member
Damn. So if I want to get everything else I should reload my previous save, redo the last bit and say no to that last question?

Got to say, while I liked it, I feel it fit a lot better in Nier.

They're going for pretty different things imho

In the first Nier, it had a better direct connection to the fate of the protag. He sacrificd himself and all memories of him existing and the sacrifice was loaded onto the player by forcing him to delete his safe, which is the single biggest sacrifice someone could make in a videogame.

In Nier Automata on the other hand, the savegame deletion doesn't directly got anyting to do with the story of our characters, but instead that entire ending segment is you,
collaborating with other players to defeath or kill the author to invoke the so called "death of the author", you take the story out of his hands and make it your own, the data you sacrifice is just the price you pay for it and there to help other people achieve the same.

Fandoms taking ownership of media is generally very common, Automata is probably the first game to ever really acknowledge that directly and make it part of the narrative,
which is great and works especially well if you take the authors greater context (that being D1, D3 and Nier 1) into account, in which we could beg all we want and never got anything but thwe worst possible ending.

Of couse that doesn't work quite perfectly because even that fought for fandom ending is still actually written by the author and not our creation.

So yea, i can very much see why someone might prefer the way it was done in Nier 1 as it made more sense in the story itself, where as it doesn't make a smuch sense in Automata (but imho doesn't have to since it's about writing your own story)

Personally i also preferred it in Nier 1, but mostly due to it being a surprise for me where as i expectet it in Automata to happen, tho i still loved automata's ending a lot.

Oops, my bad, should have noticed OT2...

Got it today, finally. Should be starting it soon. Haven't been this excited for a new game in a while.

Just finished Route A. Started up the game again and
tried jumping with the bucket of oil and it spilled. Filled it up again and the robot tripped over the pipe and spilled it yet again. I laughed quite a bit. Then I took control of 9S and obviously went any direction I could other than the objective and got ending G. I was laughing so much.
Can't wait to press on tomorrow.

Hahah I did exactly the same as this. Worth getting through that bit tho.

Done with the game. Absolutely splendid. I think it might be my favourite thing I've played this year. It's hard to put it up against Zelda cuz I played through Zelda months ago and this is so fresh, but... this was fantastic. I've never played anything quite like this, and it basically never stopped getting better.

Was this team up between Yoko Taro and Platinum successful that we can count on seeing another similar game? I looked into Taro's previous games, but it seems like the previous games aren't such a joy to play as Automata, which is a bummer. Coupled with the fact that I don't own a PS2, or a PS4, and it seems unlikely that I'll get the opportunity to experience the series from the beginning, even if I were resolved to do so.

Anyways...

D was my final ending before the final credits. 9S really went off the deep end at the end there, and yet his ending's revelation about the cannon and the machines really put a twist on things and made me feel shitty about A2s ending. Is D significantly different depending whether or not you choose to go?

I basically knew exactly what to expect with E but it still affected me strongly. I managed to make it up to the Square Enix portion of the credits before I lost any lives... but after that everything quickly went to shit, as I guess it does for just about everyone. I took the help just as soon as it was offered. When I realized that every time I got hit after that though, it removed a player's data, I lost all the relaxation that they'd brought me. I ended up losing two allied ships, and both stung a little, both gave me a little jolt. I went on youtube after to watch other people play the sequence and seeing them lose upwards of 10 or 15 allies I was shocked at the carelessness. Yet it made me doubt that Nier TRULY deletes players messages and avatars when they are killed while helping another player. At least, not immediately. I doubt most people make it through the final credits without losing a few allied ships, so if they really did fry a file each time you took a hit with help... the game would quickly run out of offers to help. Seems unsustainable.

I was amazed that the writing in D and E managed to close such a dark last third of the game on such a hopeful note. The pods feeling the same way about D and struggling to fix it somehow, the other players words of encouragement, the credits song which was powerful every time i heard it, but this time with the tension of the fight even more so, and finally, the hope for the future of the final cinematic ending. How could anyone not feel great about save wiping?

I absolutely loved this and it will easily make my list of things I desperately wish I could experience for the first time all over again. Sorry for being a little melodramatic about my post play thoughts, but I'm all done gushing.

And thanks for your help with the hacking shit, Hektor. Much much appreciated.

Me too. Identical experience.
Scratch that I think I did it backwards of that, I think I didn't see the pipe at first, and then jumped to avoid tripping. Oops. Great stuff, lol.

After reading the short stories it seems that the Pods are probably the main overseers of the world:

It turns out that 10[H]ealer is the only android on the Moon, along with hundreds of pods. However she was deceived to believe that she is actually maintaining the servers under the ocean on Earth at crush depth and was told not to open the doors less the servers get damaged by the water. One day curiosity got better of her and she opened a door only to see the desolate landscape with Earth a small disc above the horizon. The pods however were not having any of it and swarmed to apprehend her. They then erased her memories, with one of them saying

"Poor thing, this is the 46th time."

This is giving me flashbacks to Asimov's short stories.

Wait, so
does that mean the pods are the ones that orchestrated Yorha and the tower and all that?

I'd say that the Androids
not only created Yorha, but also created the Pods to keep the cycle going should any of the orchestrators ever fall (like the Commander)

I agree that the androids
created Yorha and the pods
, but just to clarify,
the Commander was in the dark and always meant to be a sacrifice, just like the rest of Yorha (which was a one time thing)
.

Wow what a game, just finished ending E and this game is just incredible, I couldn't put the game down and went through all endings in about a week, 32 hours of gaming bliss .....
And the best thing is I only paid $20 for the digital version from a friendly gaffer 'KillerAdg" in the buy and sell thread, so thanks to him for giving me one of my top gaming moments from this era ........ don't know what to play next cos I'm still thinking about Nier.

One thing tho, I booted up my original game of Nier on the 360 and am only 5 hours in, do you think it'll be alright to play that now ...... I remember it being janky and going in straight after the Platinum magic might be too much of a kick in the balls ...... maybe I should wait a while before trying to pick it up again ?!

Nier's combat is often made out to be worse than it is, if you can stand playing the first few hours you're gonna be fine.

It's a bit janky but as long as you don't stress yourself out trying to do the, frankly, boring sidequests, it's a solid enough game.

That was my understanding. We've never actually seen
a true, living android orchestrator. Which makes me wonder if android involvement was actually entirely faked by pods, after hearing this. They've installed themselves as the android's humble servants as a way to closely monitor and control their plans.

Jumped back into this, still never even beat it once yet. I think I'm coming up on the end (just got to the flooded city?)

Should I finish all the sidequests first? I can't seem to find how to get some of them. Do they even matter?

Edit: Apparently i missed the wandering couple thing? It just disappeared from my quest list...

Flooded city part has you at like 60% concerning getting through Route A. The sidequests you missed can be done in Route B, but not all of them.

That said, no sidequest is permanently missable, so don't worry.

Okay, thanks.

Also, do you happen to know what the two red dots on the map are that look to be like deep underground under the factory from the beginning of the game? Both are ??? And I don't know how to get to them

Oh, and does the half wit inventor progress carry over, or do you have to do it all in one playthrough

If I recall correctly, those are save points that you have yet to be able to actually access.

As yes, the inventor sidequest does carry over.

Still really early in, but the Supply Trader's request... do I have to keep going back to that area to respawn them? I've only found one of the three items after clearing the whole area out twice. (And it was in the building)

Never mind, got it from reloading.

Might be a case of them accumulating so much data and intelligence they decided to nudge things according to a set of core rules which may themselves be evolving. They are in a great position to do that especially if they share data all the time.

I got an amazon gift card, no idea what to spend it on, so I just bought the Nier Automata soundtrack.

Damn it feels good. It's not quite as amazing as in-game, but it's still very evocative, and dense.

So I feel like I'm pretty late to this party.

I liked Nier 1 a lot.

Gameplay in Automata was definitely better. The overall story was about of equal quality. I'd say the sound track is on par if not a bit below (with a couple of exception songs).

That E though... That will stick with me for a long while.

So now I'm trying to 100% so I can finalize my ending.

That leaves me with 2 quests. (the super boss, and 100% all enemy data).

I'm level 99, 80 something percent on weapons with 30% of them maxed (the rest are lvl 3)

Fishing is currently the slow grind. Also going to be a pain to go back and find all of the archives.

Also not looking forward to the secret boss, but hopefully it'll be better this time around now that I'm 99.

Also gotta grind out the other 17 endings.

What's been the consensus for great weapon/chip loadouts for bosses?

Are you playing on hard? I played on normal, but I found that
auto item use, auto heal, and anti chain damage combined with melee and ranged defense and +hp, made them kind of a joke, and I was nowhere near 99. You may actually want to not go with such a tanky build, as it basically just makes it very difficult to take enough damage to die before auto item brings you back up. I also used the blade pod program, which seems to annihilate everything in the vicinity.

You only need 95% enemy data for that other quest, though, though I guess that you'll go for 100 regardless.

Yeah it's actually quite hard to die on normal with those chips, very forgiving. If you're on hard though those are immensely important because the damage you get is around x3-x5 per hit.

Is there a consensus? We all seem to just sort of do our own thing lmao, though I guess stuff like Overclock and chips that heal you when you attack would obviously be helpful.

Yeah, not of the bosses have actually been hard because of how forgiving the dodge is, its just the secret boss that got me.

Probably my fault for trying at 65 the first time, but the ranged crap (for the very first fight in that small place) kicked my ass. Couldn't get a word in.

Maybe overclock will fix that.

Yeah, want to 100% everything to make my second run at E special.

Also want to try E without the help since I already excepted help once the first time around. Feel like I owe it.
