Secret of Mana Remake (PC/Vita/PS4, February 15th, 2018) Trailer

I personally think the graphics and the art style they went with looks great. Don't get the overreaction we're seeing but it's probably the reason why SE is always so hesitant to bring over their other games, like DQ.

game looks about on par with DS Final Fantasy remakes, which is perfectly fine with me.

i mean, you can't let perfect be the enemy of the good; they wouldn't even make the game if it required hi res sprites or whatever, and the game was in sore need of a remake because unlike, say, FF6 and chrono trigger, it's a great game plagued by glitches and bugs. so we kind of "need" this

and in the tier of square golden age sprite work, SoM is probably one of the uglier games. some of the early stages are iconic but the visual style falls apart at the seams as you progress

This looks ... passable I guess. Snes version will still be my preferred way to play the game. I'm concerned that they'll make a shoddy 3D port of SD3 and that's how the west will finally play it in English :( ... legally anyway.

I dunno, I think it's far superior to the likes of FFIV and V and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Shame about the bugs and terrible slowdown, though. That's one area where Secret of Evermore definitely improved.

I'm fine with the art, it could be better and make more use of shaders and textures but it still reminds me of Secret of Mana enough to want this. It also immediately looked like a step up from the Adventures of Mana graphics to me so it seems they're making more use out of the engine if it's the same one. The trailer on the PSN site says it's "development footage" so there's a chance they could be polishing things like visuals for the next few months, they got like 5-6 months to work on it.

I've been looking at old SD4: Dawn of Mana screenshots since this remake looking like a PS2 game got brought up a few times (and it's the only 3D game in the series before the remakes). Man the HUD is huge in that game, but it's definitely a different aesthetic they had going; I believe this was when they still had most of their main team together:

...So how's that Android version? Any disqualifying issues? Those screenshots make it look really good graphically, and the store page says it has controller support. Any reason not to call that the definitive version other than it being on a really inconvenient platform?

How many people here do you think have played the remake to be able to comment on what the definitive version of this game is?

Sorry, I'm out.
For me, the charm of the Seiken Densetsu series had always been it's hand-drawn graphics and sprites. Making it 3D/polygonal removes all that charm, and ruins the feel of the game.

Yeah, I think people are being overly dramatic here.

The game's presentation is serviceable, it seems internally consistent, and it matches the overall art style of the original.

This is not a FF6 style disaster.
I also dont get comparing a pic to a gif of the same area.

What kind of question is that? It came out 3 years ago, so people have had plenty of time to check it out, and if even one person has they're welcome to share their two cents.

my main concern is that it plays good. even though SoM is an arpg it played very much like a turn based RPG (unless you just spammed nukes). you had to keep an eye on buffs, keeping each character alive ration your items, ect. it had a relatively delicate balance that i could see getting lost in an overhaul. later games were essentially hack n slash so i could see it going in that direction

I never fealt like the graphics in the original were especially good. Ff6 and Chrono trigger both had looks that really popped but som not so much. It was an earlier game, after all. And being more real-time probably put more demand on the system.

I still like the look of this.

Did we even get Adventure of Mana Vita in the West?

As Tohsaka mentioned, we did get all versions of Adventure localized and released internationally. (Wonder if PS4/PC will eventually get AoM ported over to sync things up, assuming all platforms will get SD3 if/when that's remade?)

What we did not get was Rise of Mana, a free-to-play / semi-online game on iOS, Android and Vita from 2014 that was the first of these mobile-engine-Mana games. Strangely (or maybe not given its weird market approach), that was left in Japan.

Damn...

I have no interest into playing the game.

But I just saw the limited edition for the remake... As a huge fan of the game, I need it. Even if I never open the game, and boot my SNES instead.

(possibly Japan-only, don't know)

This I'd buy no question.

This looks... awful 😵
They basically stuck with the Adventures of Mana art style.

The bright side of that is they're likely not going to stop with just Seiken Densetsu 1 and 2. I'd guess they'll do a Seiken Densetsu 3 remake in the same art style with a worldwide release.
Bright side? If they re-release the best-looking Super Famicom game with this horrid art style (instead of just localizing it) it will be a goddamn tragedy.

The original game was extremely vibrant and full of color and life. These bland, low-poly visuals don't really capture the spirit of the original or look good on their own merits. I mean... there's more detail and realism in the original SNES version:

Look at the care put into the shading on that pixel art to make the architecture look rounded and deep, now look at how flat and plain the actual 3D version looks in comparison. Details like the keystones in the arches are also missing, and the way those bricks awkwardly wrap along that bottom corner is pretty lazy. It just looks cheap as hell and doesn't do justice to the quality of the original art.
Yep yep agreed with you all the way. The original looks a million times better. This looks offensively bad, and omg that insufferable anime VA too... NOPE

I'm glad I wasn't such a huge fan of the original because I'd otherwise be pretty upset, lol. Still, it had good visuals at least, and having them butchered is a sad thing to see. If they were to remake FF6 or CT in that style... gaahhhh no please no

Never played this. Any good? The original that is.
Not a bad game but extremely overrated. What I remember finding the most annoying is how it just pretended to be an action-RPG; like, some enemy attacks were impossible to dodge/avoid even though you supposedly had full control over your character(s). It's not a good combat system at all, either it should have been turn-based or you should actually dodge for real.

I've never played it, but that's not surprising considering that for a while there S-E refused to update it to play correctly on updated firmware. Not sure if they ever went back and patched it. From the screenshots I've seen, it looked like a marginal graphical update w/ lots of touched up or redone sprites and some interesting graphical effects like reflective water.

I'm curious if this remake or the previous 2D mobile port will/ever fix/fixed some of the glaring issues that were in the SNES version like Weapon orbs going missing or shitty partner A.I.

EDIT: wait, I don't think we're talking about the same thing? This?

That screenshot doesn't look so hot, but the ones from the store page including the one posted in this thread looked good to me. Basically like the original but with less ugly dithering and some tasteful lighting effects.

Edit: There are some ugly tiling artifacts happening in that screenshot that don't seem apparent in the store page shots. What's going on there?

Great news!
I am fine with the style, it's a bit like remake of the FFIV and it's great.

It's a remake, there's going to be changes and what being presented is not that bad. If I ever wanted a faithful adaptation of the original game..... I guess I will just play it on my SNES or my phone or in any type of emulation on any machine of my choice.

I am more concern on the combat system and how the magic is being presented here.

The remake models are ok. They look like a simplified version of the artwork.
I just wish they did a little bit more to the visuals than just the bare minimum.

But then again this was targeted for Vita.
So... I guess it's better than nothing?

Secret of Mana 2 is a LOT more simplistic compared to SD3, that's why I am ok with the current 3D representation which are clean if not details lacking.

Remaking SD3 will be a very tall order, in that I think it's better to just releasing it by it's original art work and balance the broken combat system. (ie., dodge rate, critical rate and stuff)

This captures the spirit of the original game, I'd say it's a job well done.
Hopefully the rest of the game can keep up with this quality.

We had this 17 years ago ...

Oddly when I see this screenshot I just remember the weird map system, the world creation system that was not explained clearly, as well as the clunky combat lol. It has good art style I give you that.
That could be just me, but I bought the game twice (PS1 and PSN), try to get into it multiple times and still fail. ;(

Eh, I don't mind it, but it's pretty clearly a budget effort. Like, the Flammie looks cute as heck to me, but you can see his wings flap like bent cardboard. This is not a World of Final Fantasy or FF Type-0 HD level of effort on Square Enix's part, which is unfortunate for how special the game is. But if you love how this looks, that's a success there.

Well, it really depends on how many people end up biting with this sort of thing. Those titles are FF and are kind of guaranteed to sell. What reason do they have to put a lot of effort into a title if it may not do too well? Personally I'd rather they actually remake something within their means than overshoot and future remakes end up out of the question.

Anyone going to PAX, let us know how it is! :)

That art style looks 1:1 with the original designs, just in 3D.

At this point we're dealing with the traditional complaints about modern graphical updates of classic sprite games that have plagued every remake/sequel since 3D began.

"it looks better in 2D" or "I assumed the 2D was implying some different art style" (realistic? non-anime? etc).

I do get it. I viscerally understand how these graphics had a more universal charm in 2D. But I don't think this represents an effort that misrepresents the original art at all. It's pretty authentic. It's just going to be a different feel in 3D entirely.

Did it sell out or something?

I don't think so, when I go directly to the site, the option to add to cart is still there. I don't have a Japan account so I wasn't able to try and place a test order but I might give it a shot later today. Otherwise I might have to try placing an order through a different proxy.

Really hope theres an option to disable the minimap. As for the preorder DLC I thought it was funny since there literally was a Tiger bikini armor in game.

This was by far the best screen they've shared so far, if they manage to hold true to that image during gameplay then I'll be more than happy with that. Most of what they've shown has been to show off the new cutscenes and obviously, there's a massive change in perspective there. The acting seems pretty bad but with something, I'd always play it in Japanese anyway.

I really can understand why some people are concerned about the changes, I am too but I was so happy to pre-order this yesterday and I really can't wait to play this again. I do also have a SNES mini on pre-order so I can also play that version if I prefer to.

Who knows, maybe this is a Final Fantasy VII remake in reverse and they will listen to what people want and also include the original game as part of the package. I was happy to pay the asking price for this but making the original game launchable only from within this game would surely add a few sales without massive costs being involved.

The original will always exist and be the "real" version. The art is bland and inoffensive but it's good enough for me I guess. I'm not expecting this to blow my mind, but it'll be a fun way to relive one of my favorite games of all time.

Also, if they fix the magic spam problem I'll be happy.

Reading about when they decided to do 3D for assets to use in potential future remakes, both this and SD3 came up. Now this is made, it seems like only a matter of time before SD3 ends up remade but in this fashion.

Yeah, gameplay, combat and rpg system was terrible, but game still looks wonderful 😀

Oh shit, more important than graphics concerns: who's doing the soundtrack? Did they manage to get Kikuta? This is all that matters to me now.

Was my first thought... what a god awful HUD. Why's so many RPGs these days thing they have a staple a giant map over a corner of the screen :/ OG was fine without it, and for when you may _need_ a map, I wish it was just a toggle -- e.g. FF XII's overlay map you can bring up or hide with R3.

BTW, Tiger Suit was the same -- was what Hero and Sprite wore instead of the bikini.

Makes me wish that instead of making 2 armors into DLC outfits, they went full out and made every armor have its own unique appearance. Spiky Suit and Rabite Cap, please :D
