Just don't use the ingame chat of Destiny 2 (PC)

A few friends are seeing that the chat uses your blizzard real name account instead of your battletag as your name in chat, still verifying if this is just an option, but the game won't give any prompts to disable.

UPDATE 3:
Did some testing and turning off real ID will still show your name oddly enough. Had my brother and another friend whom I had on Real ID before check my text though and with the option enabled, I came up as my btag and no longer my name. Opting out of real ID seems like the safest bet if you wanna avoid any of that.

UPDATE 2: Disabling REAL ID on your account management does nothing either

update: the toggle does nothing

so I tested it
and the name will still pop up
even if you've turned it off
so when I said something my name showed, when my brother typed in something
his name still showed despite having it turned off

AAAAND as soon as I posted, a friend found it;

However, why this is set as default, or how it really works is just a mystery as now.

Just said the same thing to a few friends of mine. Looks like there is no way to disable it.

I think it uses your real name for yourself (what you see, and not others unless your are on that real name friends list thing), but if you are streaming you are giving your name away.

Yep i typed one thing in. Saw my name. Then immediately remembered I need to setup 2 step.

Edit: Ty for the solution!

What kind of shit is this?

Why are you forced to use your real name in this app anyway?

Good thing I used a fake last name when I signed up long ago, but also see that there is no way to change it.

Problem is, that if you ever lost your account credentials, it will be very though to prove your ownership of the account.

Don't be so fast, because we are testing if the rest of the fireteam won't see your real name, if this toggles your side, or every side.

Your fireteam shouldn't be able to see your real name. Really only friends who both agree can see each others real names.

My concern was that when I hit enter (for chat) my real name would show up. Granted my real name would likely display only for me, my concern was if I am streaming it would be displayed for everyone.

Had you tested this?

There is absolutely no reason what so ever that your real name should be broadcasted in the middle of Destiny 2.

This is actually very dangerous for transgender folks, especially those of us who have been unable to get a legal name change yet. Huge dealbreaker for me.

I don't get this at all, why is this a default option???

Yeah, this is super awful for privacy's sake, and legal hurdles for transgender people highlight an unintended side effect that is super harmful. I understood why they thought it would be a good solution for whatever they intended, but it honestly has no real place in any game ever.

I don't know, but it's why I don't ever use the RealID portion of Blizzard's services. The last thing I need is my old name being broadcasted to everyone instead of Sophia

Agreed. I'm not gonna purchase Destiny 2 probably now. This is a huge dealbreaker for me, just like how I refused to RealID in WoW until Battletags were introduced.

Hope they get sued for this seriously real names should not be disclosed without permission.
Doubt it.

Probably hidden in the EULA somewhere. Could be Hanlon's Razor, though.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
This is doubly weird considering years ago Blizzard tried moving their official forums to real name instead of battletag and almost immediately backpedaled following massive backlash.

My friend and I just tried this. When I type stuff in it shows my real name, but to my friend, he sees my battletag. Same thing when he types.

If it's anything like other blizzard services, only real id friends will be able to see your real name. If it doesn't work like that it's probably a bug.

It's kind of a nonsense option then. Like, if it only displays your real name to you, who needs/wants that?

This shit again. Wonder how many times this hand has to be slapped back before it actually goes into the dustbin of bad ideas forever.

It'll be fun for me if it stays like this on release. Made my account with my mom's name when I was 14... 11 years ago. Blizzard doesn't let you change it AFAIK.

Yep,

This was my concern. Mostly because when I stream I don't want people to see my real name if I decide to type something into chat...

We need someone to test it exactly and see how it works. I'm seeing conflicting reports. Regardless, I don't want my "real name" broadcasted to even friends if that's what it's doing.

Problem with the testing is showing your name so, I will be reaching blizz about this

update 3: It might only show your name to your real id friends on Bnet

It really doesn't matter. My boyfriend has RealID disabled, yet he's still seeing his name in game. That shouldn't happen at all. :\

We can test this tomorrow once we're both in the beta. Both of us have not sent real-ID request to eachother and have it disabled in our Battle.net privacy settings, so if it is working correctly, we wouldn't be able to see eachother's real-ID names. If we do see it, then it's bugged or bypassing the Real-ID privacy setting, because we both have it completely disabled.

Really hope this is just an oversight or bug and they aren't actually messing around with this again. People were perfectly clear the first time they tried it. Given there's a toggle it seems probably just a bug.

I've tried chat but have not seen any messages yet in a couple strikes and crucible matches. Are we sure it's even working in the beta?

Thats how it works in every Blizzard game. It's not gonna show your real name to Battletag friends, let alone strangers.

And if your main concern is streaming, why not just add an opaque overlay to the names in chat?

Because adding extra steps on the user side is embarrassing
