Just found a lost phone and it's strange

This afternoon I found a lost phone while I was out running. I noticed the phone was on but the locked screen hasn't been setup. I looked at the called history in attempt to return the phone but there wasn't any call history at all. There were few random dials with numbers like "99", "44" from July 2017 till now. Then I tried to pick some random accounts in phonebook to send SMS to but the phone didn't have a service carrier. It must have a SIM card in it since it picked up Sprint signal but I couldn't make a call or send SMS. The phone however appeared to be on wifi. I saw Facebook app with notification on it and few other apps.

What should I do with it? Is it possible this phone was stolen from someone? My wife suggests maybe we should bring it to Sprint and they might be able to find the owner.

Don't mess with it, just take it to the carrier on the SIM card. Yes, it's weird but finding someone else's phone and looking through it will get that way.

SO going through the contacts you don't see any names? maybe "Home" or "Brother" , "Mom" " Dad" etc? nothing in the contact list? Last person this guy sent an SMS to?

Or the most common person he or she had an SMS conversation with?

You could send them a text with the phone?

I couldn't send text because it has no service carrier. There are names in the phonebook but no call or text history.

I think your best course of action is to just hand it over to a Police lost and found...And make sure you stay anonymous, even to Police.

You want to play this safe, who knows whose phone is that and why they "lost" it or why they might want it back or not.

is there any music loaded onto it or anything like that? I don't think it's inherently suspicious to have a smart phone without a carrier. I've seen a ton of people on this very forum recommending cheap android phones as mp3 players and shit. I have an old iphone without service that I use almost exclusively for listening to podcasts.

Maybe they are using it like an iPod Touch. Could hand it into the police station if they deal with lost property.

I tend to leave items, because the owner might try and retrace their steps, unless there is an obvious place to hand something in nearby.

I found a phone in Thailand once, opened up his facebook and made a status update with his account where he can pick up the phone, he got it back, karma points for me I guess

Try logging on to neogaf and see if they have an account. If your lucky they might even have GAF GOLD and can share it with you.

Take it into Sprint. They can track down the owner with the SIM number and notify someone else on the account. If it's a prepaid phone that doesn't have a name attached then they'll likely never retrieve it.

Op probably killed someone when jacking this phone and made this thread for a reasonable doubt storyline. You won't get away with this OP.

Some people use old phones as music players when running. Any tunes on it?

Or a media device for watching stuff while on the go. WifFi only.

Not really that unusual.
