Valiant Comics (Beginner's Guide) |OT| Out of the trash bin and into your hands.

Caught up with Harbinger volume 2 and its still pretty good. Is it bad that between reading volume 1 and the week or so between when I read volume 2 I'd totally forgotten who project rising spirit and that guy who works for them were ha. Signs of old age I guess.

The new characters were pretty fun, I think it can be a little risky when doing characters like Flamingo where you're trying to write them as more confident and sexually liberated to avoid making them a bit sleazy and exploitative, but think there just managing it so far. Also Torque seems pretty fun, be interesting to see more of him. Seems a bit sad they just took
out his family in the space of a bout one issue though, seems like there was more story to be told there.

PRS is less important in the first two volumes of Harbinger than it is in for Harbinger Wars or other books, so it's not surprising.

I think the fact that Dysart is as brazen as he is with the characters (particularly Peter, Charlene, and Torque) goes a long way for the dynamic he's trying to build. He doesn't hold back on who he envisions these characters to be, for better or worse.

Yeah I think thats what reminds me of the old authority/stormwatch series when I'm reading it, the fact that in the best way theres no subtletly involved in these characters, these people are just who they are even if there pretty awful. Its almost very 90,s but I quite like that sometimes in myc comics.

Secret Weapons has to come back at some point right? It's too good a concept and too well written not too.

What I know is that they are going to play some role in Harbinger Wars 2 (co-written by Heisserer) and they usually tease if they've going to do another series at the end of the last issue in a mini. Based on reception and sales, chances are high we will be seeing another miniseries within the next year.

Secret weapons has been so good so far, I'm kind of sad we've only got another issue left. I think by keeping things small in scale and the cast only a few characters it really helps you feel for the characters of the harbinger misfits. The villains still a bit cliche but the characterisation on the team is so good I enjoy the times were there just hanging around the hideout more than anything else.

Funny that the next thing for them is Harbinger Wars 2, I've just read the first Harbinger War as part of my selected reading list from the start of the Valiant relaunch. I enjoyed it, was fun seeing the different powers of the escaped kids, some of the action was good and was nice to see Haradas past with RPS in the Harbinger tie in issues. Kind of felt after so many issues we just took a very long way round
to the kids ending up with Harada and nothing else really changing though.

Next up, first volume of Unity.

I'm not a big fan of Matt Kindt so I wasn't that fussed about it.

Fair enough, was that from after reading it or you just didn't fancy getting it at all after reading Kindts previous stuff?

I've just been cherry picking series I've fancied going by the reddit valiant reading order thing. So read first few volumes of Harbinger up to Harbinger War and first few volumes of Archer and Armstrong. Didn't really fancy Eternal Warrior or Quantam and Woody. I've also heard Bloodshot picks up more from reborn so going to leave that till then. So next up in the list was Unity, I'll probably see how I like the first volume to whether I carry on after that.

After reading but also from other Valiant books Kindt has done. I love Divinity, but Rai and Ninjak have the same problem. You always feel like you missed an issue when in fact that plot point was just fast forwarded through.

I loved Bloodshot Reborn and Wrath of the Eternal Warrior is brilliant.

Yeah I can understand that might be confusing. I'll probably see how I like Unity to whether I try Ninjak and Rai, being Kindt for all of them. Unity will be the first Ninjak stuff I've read, as I didn't really fancy XO so didn't read the volume of that had the first Ninjak stuff in.

OK well I left all my comics at home (I am in the middle of Armor Wars) but am abroad for a bit

what is "out of continuity" Valiant that i can grab on comixology?

Ivar, Timewalker? any other recs?

Personally, I'm a big fan of Kindt's work. He sometimes gets a bit too ambitious with his storytelling, but he really prioritizes the characters over anything else and it really works well. The later volumes of Unity really shine because of that.

Dr. Mirage + Second Lives
Ninjak
X-O Manowar (2017, won't spoil the 2012 series as it just kind of skips ahead in time without telling us what happens in between)
Ivar, Timewalker
Divinity I-III
Britannia + We Who are About to Die
Wrath of the Eternal Warrior
Rai + 4001 AD
Quantum & Woody

Unity and Ninjak our prime examples.
In Unity, the blogger becomes noted for her coverage of XO but we don't see that happen, also what happens when Amanda gets the armor. She goes to just putting it on, doing one thing, to the armor being locked away for a while.

Whats the deal with the Ninjak vs the valaint universe web series there teasing. Looks like it could be fun if a little low budget ha. Some of the actors are really not the people I would have cast in the roles though, are these the same actors that are going to be in the movies in the future?

It's a YouTube webseries that they're doing with Bat in the Sun. They're best known for Super Power Beat Down. It won't have any connection to the movie universe. It's intended to be lower budget and a lot cheesier, yet it still looks remarkably close to the comics in spite of that.

Ah cool, might be fun then, it looks like there not taking it too seriously and it will just be wacky fun. I mean these things can work pretty well, like the Mortal Kombat series did.

I was just worried about them taking that silly tone and some of the actors (who look like maybe theyve been cast more so people might recognise them from other tv shows than look like the characters so much) into big budget movies.

Not at all. They're aiming pretty high with their casting for the TV/film stuff - Jared Leto as Bloodshot, Dave Bautista as Eternal Warrior, and Joel McHale as Woody are what they're been shooting for so far. Should be exciting.

They'll have to hope Leto doesnt have comic book movie burn out by the time its made, if they screw him for Joker and Harley the same as they did for suicide squad I don't think he'll ever do a comic movie again.

yeah, we'll have to see about that... 3 more movies as Joker on the table. That's nuts

Finishing up Armor Wars this morning with my coffee.

My to-read list is now:

Imperium
The Book of the Dead
The Valiant
Bloodshot Reborn
Rai + 4001

When in this should I read Wrath of the Eternal Warrior?

Also, is Divinity complete? or is there room for a Divinity IV?

Since you've got them on your list, read The Valiant > Book of Death > Wrath of the Eternal Warrior (and also The Valiant > Bloodshot Reborn).

Divinity IV is called Eternity and it starts releasing in October.

It was a weird situation with the ninjak vs valiant universe trailer wasn't it, I've heard of people having delays with getting full films or tv series released but not trailers, can only think maybe some of the footage wasn't ready yet or maybe there was some licensing/actor dispute to sort out or someting like that

Anyway I read first volume of unity as its where I'm up to in my reading list, I enjoyed it quite a lot as a fun all out action event series. I was maybe expecting a few more character moments to get to know some of the characters I didn't know so well at this point like eternal warrior and ninjak but I'm guessing these will come in later volumes now the teams set up or maybe more in the character solo series. Having not read XO there was quite a lot of world building set up that I'm guessing was done in there but still don' really want to read XO ha.

yeah, I have no idea what happened with the trailer.

yes, Unity will have more character-centered arcs after the first one. I think those are the best ones.

oh WOW

ok thats why Bloodshot: Reborn is old man loganish

this book is real dope

yeah, I think that Lemire is using Bloodshot to do all the things he wanted to do with Logan but probably couldn't. If he's writing Shadowman in 2018, I suspect it'll be a spiritual successor to Moon Knight, also.

Bunch of stuff got added to CMX Unlimited, including all of Bloodshot (2012) and Harbinger, and a large amount of XO Manowar (2012).
