I think grinding just to grind isnt awesome. However I am surprised there isnt more secrets to be found out in the wild. Like the dreadnaught. The queens quests from D1 in the first week were also pretty neat. I just want more to do. Strikes being not as important kind of stinks. Siting in the playlist with my buddies and blasting through strikes was always fun. Maybe bring back strike specific loot? Shaders specific? Something.. Just a reason to play strikes besides collecting Vanguard tokens.
Even with my issues I LOVE D2!
There is a theory floating around that Destiny 2 was made for casuals who want stuff handed to them... instant gratification etc. That would explain why there are no secrets because casual players generally dont seek out hidden treasures.
While I dont agree with the theory, the evidence to support this theory is piling up (see Datto's mini review) with the Nightfall being only level 240 when it used to be a level 28, 280, 380 activity in the first three years. Weekly crucible bounties that were challenging and grindy are now replaced with a simple 4-5 game completion bounty. there is no such thing as a Crucible quest. No exotic weapon quests that spanned weeks (Sleeper Cell) or ridiculously challenging secret daily missions (Black Spindle).
I think if they truly wanted this game to be casual friendly, they wouldnt have made that mechanic heavy raid. they certainly wouldnt have made all the patrols and open world stuff useless after 265. Nightfalls are less grindy but even gaffers were struggling with last week's nightfall timers.
I think there are people in Bungie who were genuinely trying to make the game more rewarding. All the while trying to make sure that people didnt hit max level in less than a week. The problem they ran into was that they only had two years to make this game and that left them with not enough time to make some drastic changes to the game. The game looks practically identical to the first, plays pretty much the same, the 30 fps cap on consoles tells me they didnt revamp their engine for consoles whereas the PC version built from the ground up can run it at 60 fps using a dual core Pentium with 4 threads.
If they had enough time, they wouldve probably added more loot, different armor sets and made some major enhancements to mods and classes. Mods feel like they belong in a $30 expansion. Not a full gen/sequel leap.
The sad thing is that every eventual DLC will be hamstrung by this last gen engine. we wont get any huge changes until Destiny 3 which will probably be a cross gen release in 2020 hamstrung by console tech from 2013.
