Magic: the Gathering |OT13| Ixalan - Port to Sideboard

Any ideas for dealing with Carnage Tyrant in U/B? Am I right in thinking Rags//Riches will work on it?

Random idea. Would this be any good?

Fervent Digging - 1R
Sorcery
As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a land.
Create three colorless Treasure artifact tokens with "Tap, Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool."

Seems... absurdly good.

that's like a split card between a manafixing pyretic ritual with minor downside and pentad prism

would be immediately slotted into ad nauseam and gifts storm

on the topic of Carnage Tyrant, the card fell by more than 50% on mtgo in a day

it doesn't really seem to have a home right now outside of Dino brews, and maybe one in the temur energy sideboard.

Dino Brews are doing really well though. Having 8 Fires of Yavimaya effects turns out to be kinda insane.

Building a U/W deck and have 17 creatures. Is this a good cost breakdown.

1: 1
2: 4
3: 4
4: 4
5: 1
6: 2
1 Multi

I have bunch of 1 cost instants, which is why I have only one 1 cost creature.

I hope Carnage Tyrant drops to affordable levels, or I get lucky in a booster. I really want that card.

Not much we can say without knowing your deck's strategy.

Assuming you intend to attack with creatures a lot, one drops typically aren't that important outside of aggro. That said, if you expect to consistently get out a creature turn 2 then turn 3, your deck is a bit top heavy, and you don't have enough creatures.

Ignoring some artifacts like Rachet Bomb and Nevinyrral's Disk. Does Rakdos or Mono Red or Mono Black have Enchantment removal (modern format).

I guess control, midrange. Stop creatures on turn 1/2 with instants, and then attack with 2/3 cost creatures.

Mana bases in Modern are consistent enough that you can pretty easily splash a 3rd color to deal with enchantments.
Well there's Scour from Existence, Karn, All is Dust, the Ulamogs.

Red and black only have stuff like Chaos Warp and permanent sac effects a la Crack the Earth, Torment of Scarabs.
Chaos Warp isn't Modern-legal.

Something is super hilarious to me about this mystery Pirate deck that's apparently terrorizing the Legacy leagues.

It's apparently a combo deck?

EDIT: If it's just Sol lands, Cutpurses, and that pirate blink spell I'm going to be disappointed.

EDIT2: But it would make sense why they want it quiet. They don't want people showing up with Veteran Explorers.

I like that it's starting to circle back around to the point where people are questioning if it even exists and that it might all be a hoax

Spreading misinformation already I see. Hope it's all just a hoax to make some people bring terrible tech cards. Why isn't choke played much in legacy btw?

There's this hilarious brew of UG merfolk in modern that play choke. Kumena's Speaker and Branchwalker are supposed to be bonkers in a more aggro oriented fish deck.

2/2 black Vampire tokens with Flying (both from Innistrad and from Tarkir) are so expensive and hard to find. The two cards that make them (Bloodline Keeper and Sorin Solemn Visitor) probably won't be reprinted any time soon too. sigh

The animated tokens look cool aswell but they don't have Vampires unfortuantly.

I used to care about owning them.

But now I just print and sleeve them.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
I don't have a picture of my vampire token, but I cut a piece of paper out and drew a basically a jack frost from Persona with bigger fangs.

You don't need to own the token. Just draw them yourself, everyone will enjoy them.

There's absolutely nothing better than shoddily hand-drawn tokens. Like my favorite ones have been Pokemon-looking quick sketches on post-its with intentional memespelling.

I used to have a complete set of Christina Aguilera trading cards from the late 90's that I used as tokens. Totally worth the 5 bucks I spent on them.

I think I still have them stowed away somewhere

I hate sealed but my lgs is gonna have it tonight with the leftover prerelease packs. Looks like I'm biting another bullet.

Kari Zev and Lannery have been great for me, and Repeating Barrage closes out a lot of games, but it's not necessary. 2 color version still does all the busted stuff, just a little slower and with less reach.

Also I really can't get over how good Hostage Taker is. Really want to go up to 4 copies, but can't justify that many 4-drops.

It's great how the only actual pirate lord isn't even the third best four drop for this deck.

Edit: Losing access to Unlicensed Disintegration and Lighting Strike definitely sucks though. I bring in enough negate and essence scatters in most games to not be happy playing Walk the Plank.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd trust Repeating Barrage that much. It's so expensive to bring back. Kari Zev is a great card, but I'm not sold on Lannery just because she's so easy to kill. Only 2 toughness, no evasion or other relevant combat abilities, I just figure the opponent's always gonna have a two power creature to block her on turn 3 and I'll have just spent 3 mana for 1 treasure.

Unlicensed Disintegration + Lightning Strike are the real deal though, but I'd worry about having enough treasure to always trigger the life loss on Disintegration. God, I wish Vraska's Contempt was 3 mana instead of 4 so I'd just play that instead.

I think I'll just stick with 2 color for the mana base consistency. None of the red cards for pirates really appeal to me that much, and it's not like the check lands are super good early on without shocks. Besides, there's always counterspells for removal, and Lookout's Dispersal is a top tier option for pirates.

If I play around with red, it'll be either Dinos or Izzet Favorable Winds.

Spyglass seems good against a bunch of decks. Against Rumanap Red you name Hazoret or Rumanap Ruins. Against energy I guess you can name hydra, longtusk cub or ballista.I dont think it does anything to Approach decks though.

Edit: Wait, whats the difference between a : and a , for an ability? Gather says activated abilities have colons which Longtusk Cub has but Hazoret has a comma.

Drafted a UG merfolk tempo deck. Not great but I have a decent curve and ways to push through damage.

Game 1. No creatures 4 lands, mull to 6, 1 creature draw just 2 more creatures for the entire game.

Game 2. No lands, mull to 6, 1 nonland and it's not a creature, mull to 5, no lands, keep, scry to bottom, draw my first land on turn 3.

Magic at its best.

Not to mention it's one of the best cards against Scarab God. A 5/5 that keeps coming back isn't that hard to deal with.

Biggest slight I can see against it is Abrade is a thing.

No, Hazoret has a : just the same. The comma is because discarding a card is part of the cost. All activated abilities go "cost colon effect".

You mean her direct damage ability? The commas are used to show that there are multiple costs you have to pay, and the last one is followed by a colon. Thus, it is an activated ability.

Thanks, I see the colon after the "discard card" now. I guess Spyglass also shuts off Planeswalkers. Seems like you would want at least one in most sideboards.

Travelling quite a bit this weekend so trying to make some standard decks to keep me busy. Thoughts on U/R flyers with Saheeli Rai and Glorybringer/Dreamcaller Siren at the top end? Would use a few of the new blue flyers and maybe Hope of Ghirapur for early drops along with some burn/opt/Unsummon.
