Waypoint: 'A Hat in Time' is the N64 Throwback 'Yooka-Laylee' Was Trying to Be

Yeah Danielle Riendeau did a write up that really was in tune with everything I felt while playing AHiT.

.... That platforming, crucially, feels good, with plenty of augmentable powers on top of the more typical running, jumping, whacking and diving. Hat Kid (yes, that is the protagonist's name. I think...) has a jump that's just a few shades floatier than Mario's, but she can easily double-jump and dash in mid-air, allowing her to cover a ton of distance over enemies or land. She's small and nimble, and quickly turns on a dime of you need her to.

And you can find magical yarn throughout the stages, allowing you to craft new hats—like a sprinting hat that lets you tear ass through stages, an ice hat, and a "detective hat" that lets you solve crimes.

Its worlds are diverse and cleverly designed, and in its best moments, reminded me of my favorite game of all time, Psychonauts. One early stage, where you need to stealthily navigate a bananas film set where two movies are being shot simultaneously (some cartoon owls are filming a western, and their rival penguins a… disco kung fu movie?) gave me intense early Double Fine vibes.

Picked out the bit that lines up with what I feel are the strongest points of the game:

It's funny, feels good to move around in, levels are all interesting, and every single collectable feels like it has genuine purpose.

Can't wait to play it tonight. Yooka-Laylee was definitely a bit of a disappointment so looking forward to this all the more.

It's great man, and it takes a good feature or two from one of the underappreciated platformer GOATS: Sunshine.

Dunno about Sunshine but I for the most part enjoyed Yooka Laylee. I couldn't care less about which game it is based on be it DK 64 or Banjo Kazooie, it was a fun platformer all things said and done.

Looking forward to pick this up in the next couple of days.

GOATS: Sunshine.
Thank you for this. Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one who defends this game.
Been super mega interested in this game, and feel so happy that it's getting good press. Can't wait to play it.

EDIT: not to turn this thread into a battle for Sunshine, but let's get Ryckert in here

I really don't get the hate for Yooka, it had some technical issues (some of which are fixed now) and some design issues, but I thought it was still really enjoyable.

Anyway, A Hat in Time looks tight, if my backlog wasn't so stacked already I'd probably get it day 1.

This is the kind of thing I wanted to hear. I enjoyed Yooka Laylee but it's not holding a candle to the N64 greats like Mario 64 and BK. I will definitely pick up Hat in Time eventually but I'll wait a bit and see if they announce a Switch version, if not, I'll pick it up on PS4.

I swear Super Mario Sunshine is as divisive and controversial as pineapple on pizza

and I love both

I'm REALLY excited to play this if it the gameplay reminds some people of Sunshine

Thats taken the game straight off my radar.
Might pick it up down the line when on sale.....

Lol I'm only really referring to the optional hidden challenge levels, it's a good thing.
Or maybe it's gone straight to a day one purchase....if the whole game is like the optional challenge levels then that's incredible.

Comparisons to Space Station Silicon Valley are one of the fastest way to sell me on a game.

The N64 platformer era is baaaack, aw yiss.
Would you say all signs point to A HiT?

A Hat in Time |OT| A HiT Platformer

That's what you meant, I know.

If people want to be hyperbolic and pass on a game since one person compared it to Super Mario Sunshine on a message board, I don't know what to tell you.

(Hat in Time doesn't have a cleaning mechanic or anything like FLUDD, for one.)

Yooka Laylee felt like your step dad wearing your dead dads skin.

I was interested in both games early in development, but near the tail end of things, Hat in Time ended up looking much better to me. I'll get it at some point down the line...
