SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

Man, people must be getting dumb in their rush to hack the SNES Classic.

The instructions clearly say IN CAPS TO NOT LOSE THE ORIGINAL KERNEL!

It even gives you a perfect storage solution: send it to your own email.

Has anyone been able to get the Actraiser retranslation and the Super Mario All Stars Brick fix to work? I can get the stock versions to work but every time I patch them I get a crash or an error.

Yup, I had it saved, but it was after I got an error so I assumed that a restore wouldn't be the need for it.

Oh well.

Mine works perfectly now in original condition and I have an Amazon preorder that will hopefully get shipped soon to hack.

Anyone got Rock n Roll Racing to work on the stock emu? I had no luck with the No Intro USA or JAP roms compressed or not. Pal ROM patched also no good. Works fine in Retroarch but still.

Oh good, so as long as I haven't deleted it I can just back it up now then. Would you happen to know where it places it by default?

What they don't tell you is that if you make an error that it actually changes the dump file if you attempt to return to the original kernel. Only the original dump file matters.

I didn't realize that.

Well, it wasn't specifically directed at you, but at everyone that on every page is surprised when people tell them to not lose the original kernel.

Well that was easy. Added a few things in my collection and the only thing that didn't work was Super Street Fighter II. Gundam Wing Endless Dual plays great. Not sure I like all the extra games ending up in a sub folder but don't want to fiddle with it too much right now. Need to go through some other junk I have, I'd like to see if these old SD Gundam games work on it...

NBA Jam vs. NBA Jam TE

Which one is better? What are the differences?

|
V
NBA JAM TE for the SNES provides many features over the Original
translation. Most noticeably is the battery backed-up record keeping,
new options screen for strange "hotspots" and "power-up icons",
increased rosters, new dunks, and new sounds. The quality of the sounds
has not changed that much, and the graphics are practically identical.
However subtle differences are noticeable. One feature that was removed
was the FMV during the halftime. I liked this feature and was sad to
see it go. This version is a full 8 Megabits larger than the previous
which brings the size of the cart to 24 Megabits.

probably some other stuff like cheat codes, etc.

Just tried to mod my Classic, couldn't get past this error:

22365264_10155740501433582_7090273841729401223_n.jpg

It didn't seem to matter how long I would hold the Reset button before releasing. Nothing happened and I couldn't install the driver. I wonder if there's some sort of incompatibility with either Windows 7 or when using virtualization. I was trying to do it from my Windows 7 virtual machine in VMWare.

I didn't see anyone in this thread post DQ3 US-style box art, but digging around on the internet I found these:

I've never played the DQ3 SNES port, in fact I only played a bit of DQ3 on NES. So it'll be fun to try it out.

Had a minor freak out...black screen after installing retroarch. Flashed original kernel still black screen of death...panic sets in. I frantically start searching Reddit and noticed my PlayStation 3D Monitor which has avoided the blinking red light of death for a good 6 years is blinking red. Plug my PS4 in monitor is still dead. Move the snes upstairs... all is well.

Sucks I lost an awesome monitor but at least I got it for $150. Now to find a cheap 4K monitor :(

Not sure if I remember correctly, but did it ask you what you were modding? It says NES mini twice in your screen shot.

Your Hakachi seems to be outdated too

if you don't know then you want TE for sure. only con to TE would be the fact that players accumulate injuries and become slow if you don't sub them out, but other than that basically everything is better, just a different (and expanded) roster

I'm attempting to mod my Super NES Classic. I was using the Hakchi from a link given in a YouTube video that walks through the process.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dBUfO9X8Hc
You should use the newest version of hakchi2 from GitHub, and when you start it up, click the big ‘SNES Classic Edition’ option when you choose which type of system you have.

I would flash back to your original dumped kernel with the setup youbhave now before you do that

Why would you use a YouTube video, instead of the instructions in the OP?
I downloaded the latest Hakchi and tried both sets of directions (the video and the OP), and neither worked. I did select "Super NES Classic" when Hakchi started up, as well.

I'm really wondering if it's an issue with using a VM rather than an actual PC. I'll have to see if I can find my old Dell laptop with XP Pro and try it on that.

I did it using Parallels on my Macbook Pro fine.

Is there a way to make the games display full screen/stretched? Don't really like the frames.

You don't want to do that, all the games will look terrible. (You can't anyways AFAIK)

I'd suggest just taking the black frame if you don't like the others.

Alright, finished with mine. Not gonna mess with it any further. I hand-sized each of the boxes, color-corrected everything, and tested every single game. It's organized, clean, and I love it.

Wow, that's awesome, nice work! I'd like some of those SNES boxes! Many of mine, especially the colors, looks off compared to the OG 21.

Also I remember being really bummed about this: TE removed the rare occurrence of shattering the basket’s glass panel when dunking. Whether it’s intentional or a glitch, it sucks!

There is a recent translation of Fire Emblem 4 that's technically still in beta, but it's basically done. Highly recommended (and my favorite FE).

Nice! Thanks

Yeah this, I added this to my SNES Mini earlier and played through the prologue. Seemed to be fine.

You need to use Retroarch for it to work though. Doesn't boot otherwise as far as I'm aware.
Oh....damn, Retroarch looks like trouble. I'll check it out tomorrow.

DQ3 doesn't work, right? Or are you using Retroarch?

Whoa! How did you add all of those NES/GB/GBA games? Are there additional steps to take?

Man y'all are making me want to import a UK Super Nintendo to turn into a retro gaming machine. I grew up with the US SNES so I just wanna keep that one confined to SNES games but the UK SNES might as well be a new console altogether with its different form factor, and I'd love to play the dozens of GameBoy and GameBoy Advance games I never got through since I don't really like playing on handhelds.

Can the SNES Mini run DS emulators too or is that too advanced? Not sure how the touch screen would work but damn I have DS games I haven't even unwrapped yet because of the handheld aversion thing.

If a kernel is like a bios, then yes, it's illegal to spread it.

If it is just the *nix kernel, then it should be fine to share as that would be open source by default.

If it is the kernel plus additional copyrighted content (such as artwork and emu code), then the dump technically wouldn't be shareable.

*shrug*

I tried it using VMWare Fusion 10 with a Windows 7 Ultimate VM. My Mac is running High Sierra, though I don't think that would matter to the VM.

I had the same issue using Windows 7 through VirtualBox on my Mac. I fixed it on mine by first adding the SNES to the list of USB devices that would get passed through to Windows. Once you install the driver and hacked kernel the SNES will then show up as another USB device that you will also have to add to the list of USB devices to be passed through. At that point you will be able to load more games in hakchi.

Doesn't work with the stock Canoe emulator unfortunately :(

4 and 5 do though.
