SO4 isn't as bad as people say it is. But is anyone defending SO5? I was so hyped for it... only to be disappointed.

I like SO5 quite a bit, as a fan of Star Ocean 1. It came at a good time for me, when I was completely exhausted by open world games that are simply way too large. Playing a game with a smaller scope just felt really good. It reminded me very much of SO1, especially in terms of brevity of the script. It's not for everyone (or, apparently, anyone other than me; I've never actually seen anyone else really speak very highly of it), but I'm glad it was made.

I guess this remaster would finally give us the quality of those bullshots released way back? I thought Star Ocean 4 looked great but the resolution drop during battles was brutal

SO5 is just a bummer to me because of what it could've been but aside from a repetitive battle system, some too-wide-open fields in the overworld, and the Protect Anne bosses I think what's there is okay. I think it was here that I heard someone describe it as feeling like disc 1 of a much bigger game and I think that's the most perfect summary of how I feel about it.

I've only played SO2 back in the day and it seemed to have a pretty unique way of handling party joins and stuff, depending on if you started the game as Rena or Claude. I think that was a thing? Also a bunch of endings, though those weren't really all that special.

I also made a lot of rotten sashimi.

Does Star Ocean 4 have parabola beam?
PARABOLA BEAM!

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Even as an SO fan, it's hard for me to defend 5. 5 lacks in content and there's too much backtracking and retreading of locations.

This is coming from big games like SO3 and especially SO4.

Yeah, the final dungeon and boss kinda just show up and the game ends. I actually enjoyed playing SO5 but it's clear that the budget just wasn't there. The full party battle system sounded cool on paper but just didn't work, cutscenes were really needed instead of the stand around and listen to people talk scenes and planet hopping would've been cool. It gets deserved flack but I think more fondly on my time playing 5 than I did 4.

To be fair I'd actually like to finish SO5. There's just some dumb boss that kills a regular party member in 5 seconds flat and that somehow results in a game over. I wish I was exaggerating but I literally get seconds and then it's all the way to the title screen again.

This is what I’d want. I can finally beat the game. Don’t think I can go back to PS3 to finish the final boss off.

Hopefully this move means that tri-ace will be more open towards PC ports of their ASKA engine games, which falls in line with SEGA's efforts to getting their Japanese portfolio on Steam - Valkyria Chronicles, Bayonetta, Vanquish.

Resonance of Fate was made with the same engine as SO4 (ASKA), so perhaps there is a possibility of the game ending up on Steam. I would be overjoyous if this was the case.

Was not interested until I read that it's also on Steam. Usually no physical for console games always kills my interest, but I don't mind all digital on PC at all.

Will pick up with discount for sure. Had been eyeing getting a PS3 copy for the last few years, haha.

This would be interesting... Hope they fix the hexagon system for world map. I hated it

SO5 was in my top 10 GOTY last year. Technically, it's pretty good (graphics and animation), and I like the characters.

The story is pretty straightforward with no grind required. And the side content is there if you want to do them.

SO5 is ok. I wouldn't call it a great game myself, but I don't really understand a lot of the over the top hate for it.

I've never played a Star Ocean game. Where does this one rank in the series?
Gameplay is near the top, it just suffers from bad writing. But so do pretty much all Star Ocean games.

I'd really like 3 and 5 on Steam eventually as well. I'd love SO1 and 2 but since playing the PSP games on PPSSPP is actually better than playing the PS4 version I'd question how well it'd turn out. lol

Maybe when it's on sale for a good amount... Would prefer a SO3 sale though, since that's my favorite.

4 deserves hate for its unholy trinity of 'kay, catgirl and chicken, but it was still the best in terms of living up to the promise of adventuring through space. For that, I'll always have some affinity for it.

Pretty much. I still enjoyed 5 more than 4, but it definitely felt like it could have been a whole lot more.

You’re glad it probably killed the franchise? Lol jk kinda

Cool thanks, maybe I'll give it another fair chance.

The fantasy scenario where we either got the SO5 we got, or we got some massively higher budget SO5 that ticks every box you want doesn't exist, though.

It was basically a SO5 at the budget it had, or no new Star Ocean game. The franchise was already basically dead.

Really cool news that it's coming this way. I'm loving the JRPG resurgence! Especially with the PS2 Classics popping up on PS4 and a ton of stuff making its way to PC. Hopefully the Star Ocean 2 remaster makes its way to North America once this comes out.

Does it fix bugs like randomly freezing when using Arumat's Dragon Roar? Not going to buy this tho.. too many missables and most of Battle Trophies are extremely annoying. And you need to do 50 % of them for each character if you want to have all characters' level cap raised.

If you are a story person when it comes to JRPGs, switching to japanese voice acting only fixes half of the problem. The story was bad to begin with. Edge Maverick is a not particularly competent captain/party leader who almost all of the supporting cast spend the entire game slobbering over.

If you are a gameplay person when it comes to JRPGs, the battle system is pretty fun. I disliked the story and characters of SO4, but was still entertained enough to spend the 40 hours finishing it.

Might pick this up later, I only played the 360 version and the dub plus backwards disc swapping later in the game to return to previous areas were a huge pain in the ass.

My only complaint was those annoying backtracking attempting to extend the life of the game, or at least that is what it felt for me.
I did finish it 3 times for the platinum. (proof)

lol oof, I'm glad these days it's relatively common for completing the harder difficulty to give you the trophies for the difficulty levels beneath it.
