I do get that people believe that if you support somoene that has views or said things that goes against people that you believe they are wrong and are supporting the same ideas, I totally get it.

I don't think the idea is completely far fetched but there are just so many people out there that you can't easily label half the country as bad just cause they support trump. People do not have the same views, idea, history, culture so it isn't that easy to say they are what you feel they are.

Gaf seems to get it when the discussion is about science. They know how little value someone who espouses creationist myths brings to a discussion on the history of the earth and evolutionary biology, for instance.

So why, when the topic shifts to diversity in video games we're meant offer a seat at the table to people who suggest those who are pro-diversity "don't actually play games" and have ulterior motives? Or people who fall back to "artistic integrity" defenses when questioned? What value is there in hearing these people out when time could be better spent furthering the discussion rather than bringing you up to speed?

So if someone were to tell you that your portrayal of conservative people as inherently bigoted is itself bigoted, would you reflect on that, or would you feel that they are missing your point? I suspect the latter. Without letting this spiral into a drawn out hypothetical argument, the point I'm trying to make is to hold a mirror up so that you can imagine how upsetting it feels to be spoken to with hostility even in service of something you believe is right and just. Humans are humans, and vitriol is more effective at rallying people with whom you already agree than it is at changing hearts.

I don't think you and I have had an prior interactions so this might be our initial discussion. I want you to know that I've noticed two things in reading your post here.

1) You are intelligent and capable of articulating yourself well.
2) I can feel your disappointment over recent events. I am very sorry.

I don't know exactly how NeoGaf will adapt to these changes in the coming weeks and beyond, but I am optimistic. I think there is a genuine opportunity for things to change in a good way.

There is a pivotal line of reasoning in your post with which I agree wholeheartedly. That is, that we should bear our beliefs always, no matter the climate in which we find ourselves. To do anything but is as you said, cowardly. I'd venture a guess that in hostile environments (at least, hostile toward our belief set) it is especially important to be candid about those beliefs.

Having said that I would, as gently and diplomatically as I can, suggest that while it is good to be brave enough to enunciate our ideas no matter what, it is also good to have an atmosphere that permits and even fosters the exchange of ideas. And NeoGaf is now much more balanced than it was in days past.

You mentioned having spines. This is my third account. I have been banned twice, not because my arguments were picked apart but rather because they were silenced. And that is not a good environment. Take a look at some of the posts here in the last few pages and you will see the "picking apart" is really just a series of snide remarks, ctrl-V'ing LOL and exaggerating incredulity. That is what I was subjected to, shortly before my access was revoked, both times.

It appears that this dynamic is no longer in place, and that can be nothing but good. I think that if you and I were to find something in which we disagree we could exchange ideas, and if one or both of us was wrong we would consider carefully what we had learned from each other.

I for one hope you stay. I don't want you to go because you seem to be a valuable member of this community.

And I've no doubt that there are indeed some spineless and thoughtless people lurking here. Maybe you can help them.

This is where the issue of not having the OT open from the start also creates board issues, these threads should be locked or moved for sure.
