Chip and water are just something else. You stated your opinions which is fine, but now you're constantly countering everyone else's and coming back for more, even going off topic posting another competing game into this thread. SMDH!

I'm enjoying the game but playing mostly solo it does seem a bit bare, seems like a game that would be a lot more fun with a group to play with and things to do.

Yes they are, but if you want to play a good naval battle game now, Blackwake is really good. They just introduced several different ships and fort invasions in a recent update.

We don't know that yet. The game is not finished, and Ubisoft is usually good with updating. The game is based on Assassin's Creed engine, so they have the tools to make land gameplay happen. It would be more accurate to say that it probably won't be an open water free roaming game, at least from what we've seen.

They already said it wasn't. You don't even control a character, your "ship" is your character. There's no land based gameplay, no getting off a ship going into taverns, exploring land or anything.

It's basically like World of Warships but set in earlier times, which is disappointing since most people that wanted a sailing game from Ubi after Black Flag wanted an actual....full-fledged golden age of sailing game, being able to choose to sail under different flags (IE France, Spain, England), be a privateer, pirate, merchant. Find people to join your crew with their own stats, etc and growing them as you play the game. Having a storyline with quests/sidequests and things.

This is probably the reviewer I trust most. He pays for his games regardless of whether he gets a copy from the publisher. He plays them extensively and he has the courtesy of putting as much time into a game as he chooses. Really glad I didn't buy in and I can't help but laugh at the people who swore that the game had more to offer than the gameplay loop seen in the beta.

What the fuck were the doing with all of that development time? Just making sure the water looked fucking awesome?
This seems to be an ongoing trend in AAA gaming at the moment. "Where the fuck did the time and budget go towards this thing?"

Not even Monster Hunter held strong for too long and that game features both masterclass gameplay, progression and compelling social gameplay whereas I don’t expect Sea of thieves to survive the week. It’s not fortnite or PUBG.

Yea, I’m starting to think it’s time Rare really does close up shop.

Off topic but you know MHWorld just celebrated 7+million copies sold the other week. Its the best selling Mohun game ever. Even compared to the record shattering psp games.

If you watch the reveal trailer from e3 2015 it looks like the final game, actually some features shown were stripped. Really don't understand what they did over the last 3 years.

Not the point. It sold well but doesn’t seem to have retained as many players as you’d think. 90% of the day one players that took over my friends list dropped to 2-3 players within 3 weeks. And that’s a game with the right loot hooks, chase and compelling cooperative gameplay encounters.

Point is... what do you expect a game with none of that to do?

Hard facts vs anecdotal evidence from your friends list. Hard to argue with that...

I think that happens with most Triple A games. It comes out>people beat it>there's an update>people either move on or wait for more content. There's always that peak of players during that initial launch because everyone takes a bite. Everyone wants in on it.

It's sad when I think about Monster Hunter 3 and 4. Just because I thought they lasted longer. I might be wrong about MHW, but it's also streamlined it for people who wanted a lot smoother experience. It's also great to look at and it's fun. You can also get a Monster Hunter expert to join your game and slay a beast in a few short minutes.

I almost dread an SOS because I'll get shown up. I haven't finished MHW yet and I'm ok with that. I did solo until I SOS a creature and he was a MHW expert if you ask me. Everything he did was grade A level stuff. I don't normally feel this way, but the new charm feeling wore off.

Sea of Thieves though needs something. It's cool to think about hopping on XBox Live at night and joining people. Hell, I had a similar experience with the FFXI beta on 360. There will be Sea of Thieves streams and everyone will mention it in their Twitter stream for a week or two. Then what, Far Cry 5 and then God of War...

I hope this games does well, but who knows. The trend for games like this need something to hold its player base otherwise it's a discussion for a month and then everyone moves on. I've been trying to follow the discussion of this game. I was hyped about it, but I'm getting FC5 this month and God of War the next.

I could buy this, but I hear there aren't any real story quests. :( is it from the battle royals mindset or the minecraft mindset?

There is no story quests. There's no dialogue either beyond NPC sound effects. It's definitely not Battle Royale, and you can't really get creative like in Minecraft.

I actually compare this more to DayZ but with fetch quests. There's a wild west PVP aspect to it, and you kill each other to loot them, but unlike DayZ, there's no actual item looting or item progression. You're just looting money.

It feels like an 80s console game with modern fit and finish. By that I mean, it's a simple gameplay loop with only cosmetic variations between the different "voyages". I was concerned after the beta that it didn't have enough meat on the bone to give it any legs, but I have to say I'm really surprised that there appears to be nothing more from the last beta I played than snakes, messages in a bottle and a lot of high cost cosmetics to unlock. The NPCs aren't voice acted other than a simple intro line. And the only NPCs are the tavern wench and the faction merchants. No one wandering around the towns, no NPC ships. For enemies, there are only skeletons, snakes, and some tentacles. No evil NPC pirates, no government soldiers (classic pirate trope of outlaw vs the governor's troops), no real mystical element besides the skellies and the same skull that drops every time.

The most fun I had in the game today was playing for an hour with a friend, we ran through a couple of voyages and destroyed someone's ship. The mechanics of the sailing and the ship combat, and the flexibility of being able to do things like sneak on board a ship, leave a gunpowder barrel on the desk, and then destroy it from a distance, is pretty cool. The problem is it requires a good group of friends to play with. Going at it single player is possible, but it's fairly brutal if you come across another ship, and overall kinda boring.

No Man's Sky had more to do at launch. There is no doubt in my mind.

It will be interesting to find out some time what the inside story was on the dev process for this game. Were they constrained on budget? Did they only have a handful of people working on the game over the last few years? Do they just have lack of creative talent on the game system design side? (the art, sound effects and music are typical top-notch whimsical Rare)

Anyway, it's a shame, I was excited for the game and there's some fun in spurts with other players, but overall it has no legs and I'd be surprised if I get more than 15 hours out of it before I move on to something else. The idea of ongoing enhancements and additions to the service is laughable, I don't really have any faith that they can deliver on that, and it's well known these days that first impressions during the launch window is CRITICAL. Many players will never give this game a look based on feedback they are seeing, and players that leave will mostly never come back. Too much competition for people's time out there.

I played for 4 hours so far with a buddy in the small ship. This game is absolutely gorgeous, but I'm not sure if I'm enjoying it all that much.

It was cool learning how to maneuver the ship at first. Once we got it down, the treks just felt long and tedious. I stopped wanting to be the one controlling the wheel. Going to small, empty islands and whacking snakes and skeletons lost its appeal very quickly.

I'm just not sure if a 13,000 gold jacket or 130,000 gold ship skin is enough of a motivator to keep me going. The gameplay loop just doesn't have a strong hook.

Beard of the Forest

The No. 1 cause of forest fires is trees.
Let's keep this discussion Sea of Thieves related at least. Making comparisons to other games and sharing your impressions is fine, but derailing the thread with comments solely pertaining to another game is not. Feel free to create an appropriate thread for discussion of a separate game if one does not already exist.

From what I seen, you get to control your captain. Remember, a large part of AC4's ship battle was boarding. Also, we have really seen that much, so we'll hold out until E3 before we can really say what's what.

It would be nice to have such a game, but that's ways off, and Sea of Thieves is certainly not that game. We're pretty much hoping for a Star Citizen of pirate ships.

There's no boarding, you can initiate a boarding action against ships, but the combat is "auto resolved," you don't actually see the fight or get to engage in melee combat.

As far as the captain goes, well yeah you have a captain (not really the captain though, a ships captain doesn't usually steer it, that's the helmsman, which is something that the AC games, and many others, get wrong). However it's just a visual thing, since you never leave the ship.

This is information that was posted early on the forums after the E3 reveal and talked about. It's basically a ship combat game not a fully fledged golden age of piracy simulator (which is what many of us wanted).

Unless that changed between then and now.

edit - just saw the mod post, I'm sorry I didn't see that post until after I replied to this message from my notifications, won't post anymore about Skull and Bones in this thread.

The Man With The Golden Dong
Game is a choppy, boring, bare-bones mess. I literally haven’t played a game with this much screen tearing and frame drops since the early PS3 days, it’s a very sad state of affairs.

I’m just relieved I tried it on a $5 month in Gamepass. Really a bizarre shame, this product, and it breaks my heart.

Insofar as reviews go, there’s ole ty of 4/10, and 5/10’s floating around out there, they’re just either not up on Metacritic yet, or they’re from smaller sites and won’t be.

Just watched the stream (just found a random one that was just starting, was Joe with some friends, first of his I've ever watched) to see the game in action. The lack of content and variety when it comes to the main game and the quests was pretty amazing (seems like Joe said one of them had did all the main stuff before the stream in just 3 hours, damn), and had them massively disappointed. As Joe put it, "The game's beautiful, it looks Rare, it plays Rare, and then it's over."

On the flip side after that they decided just to create there own fun for people watching the stream, they started having a good time that way, just trying to make each other laugh, role paying, and just trying to find other players to start shit with (along with trying to get the Kraken to spawn) while they sail.

Seems like it's a get that gamepass, get a bunch of friends online at the same time that likes pirates, just dick around creating your own fun until the repetition and long waiting while sailing reaches its limit, and then cancel pass.

You sort of have to wonder how much longer Microsoft is going to keep Rare around, consider the company's burn-it-down strategy with game studios in general.

Metacritic is officially showing a score now for Sea of Thieves.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-one/sea-of-thieves

It's currently at 67 right now

o_O
TBH that's only based on four reviews right now, not exactly the largest sample size.

But I have to concur with some other posters, I rate AGC very high as a reviewer (I may not always agree with him, but I always see where he's coming from which I appreciate), and that was pretty scathing.

I have been so hooked on this game since release. I haven't played with random people online using voice chat in years! Maybe since back when XBL launched on OG XBOX (ahhh memories of MotoGP & Ghost Recon). Sea of Thieves has me itching to get online with a great crew and just have fun. I prefer a 2 man sloop at the moment, mainly due to it being quicker doing everything involving the sailing aspect, although I have had more laughs in a 4 man Galleon with a full crew on chat.

I have only played the game for about 30 hours, but in that time I have tons of stories with many different people. I cant wait to get back and seek out more treasure. The potential this game has in the years to come to add more and more has me frothing at the mouth.

One complaint I have at the moment aside from server issues, If your on a sloop alone then you should be captain and have privileges to brig any trolls who joins just to annoy you with crashing the ship, dropping anchor constantly or dumping your treasure before leaving your game. Has happened a couple of times.

Apparently this is Rob Beddall, he linked his website in his comments. Some more quotes:

After each organised playtest session we were encouraged to give feedback on the experience. we would play for around 45 minutes to an hour each time. perhaps once a week. after the first few sessions, people in our barn ( Rare is split into 4 wings of offices they call Barns) were finding any excuse not to play... because we weren't bug hunting and such, but expected to play the game as a average player would, it just got very boring very quickly. admittedly, the first few sessions were hilarious... but the experience wore thin very quickly. I always thought that the initial Unity prototype that was developed along side the unreal version at the beginning was more fun.

I'm not sure if they made it into the final game but in the prototype you could steal other players ships, and you could set ships on fire ... often accidentally by trying to cook food. it was a blast.

Funny anecdote , even after working on it for 2 years or so.. there were still a lot of people who were working on it that wouldn't have been able to tell you what the actual game was. .. or was going to be. It never seemed like a solid idea.
The original idea was that it was a buddy adventure. Like the kids movies the devs grew up with. Where 4 friends or so would be pulled out of their ordinary life and go on some wild adventure. It think that initial idea was awesome and had so much potential. We were even taken on an outing near the beginning of the project to watch The Goonies at a privately rented cinema with free beer to get a feel for what the game had to FEEL like when you played it. I absolutely believe that they had all the best intentions of making a truly awesome game. I personally just feel that they spent too much time on the tiny details rather than adding content.

I'm not sure how melee works for example coz when I left a year ago, there was still no melee combat in the game, or enemies. which is a bit crazy when you think about it. leaving major gameplay issues til almost the end of production.
They were really anal about every detail of the game. Ranging from things like getting the characters hands to place exactly on the anchor wheel, climbing ladders with treasure chests had to look believable and I personally had a piece of work returned with the feedback.... the thumb needs to be rotated about 10 degress... when referring to the hand on the balustrade of the ghost ship.. if it's still even there.

I have never worked on a game that was developed so slowly.
All I can say is that the plans and ideas for the game were bigger than what was released but there were never any solid plans on extra game mechanics. For instance there were originally 7 different zones I think but that was cut down to 3. The main game loop has always been the same though. Personally i was hoping for dungeons and raids and such but that has never been a thing. My worry would be that it's taken them 4 years or so to produce what's there. Which isn't a lot in terms of variety. The main pirate ship was constantly being worked on the whole time I was there. That's 2 years for 1 asset. It became a bit of a joke among us. Personally i think they need to be a bit more relaxed and not be so anal about perfection if they're going to release DLC. Otherwise there's just not going to be enough content.

I'm surprised people actually expected anything different. If you look at Rare's track record, what have they released in the last 10 years that wasn't wafer thin on content and was actually any good? It's like the Rare fanboys forgot about the recent games and were expecting the same calibre of games from yesteryear... but it's not the same devs working there any more. There may be one or 2 but it's a very different studio from what it was when the good games were being made.

I don't know if [microtransactions] made it into the final release. At one point that was definitely how they planned to fund the game. I'm also seeing people say that the game cost $60. So a full price game. Their intention was to release at £20 from what I remember. I have no idea what changed.
The core game loop hadn't been solidly defined at that point, other than get chest, return chest, get gold and buy ship upgrades. (Which weren't in the UE4 version of the game at that time ). We always thought there would be more... but then there never was 'more' . Seriously, while all the interns and juniors were running around just being happy to be working at Rare, being featured in video blogs in 'look how hip and happening Rare is' PR stunts, many experienced devs were just looking at each other with the shared opinion that 'this isn't a game'. It was bizarre.

It's surprising that this guy seems out of the loop for some aspects of the game that have been public knowledge for months/years.
Anyway I do agree with the general opinion that selling the game for $60 doesn't make much sense. I wouldn't have bought it at this price (I'm not entirely in the target audience anyway, but still). Low/free entry cost + microtransaction makes more sense, but with only cosmetic content I'm not sure how viable it is (I wouldn't have spent much on it either, but then it seems to work for Fortnite BR so what do I know...).
In the end the game pass model makes the most sense, and I suppose that's how most people will be playing the game, at least for the first months (maybe the amount of content or the time spent will make it worth a full purchase later on).

Also I can understand how even in the dev team some people may disagree with the design choices that were made, but that doesn't make them wrong. Some people want a loot game but I'm quite happy that the game isn't a Destiny like. Some may find all the attention to details on the boat and general interaction nitpicking, but it really is at the core of the experience, it gives the game its peculiar charm.

Ok, so I previously said some things, which I now can say differently. Its not a 180 by any means, but more of a... Lets say a 90?

Anyway, after playing for a lot more hours with friends they knew what they were doing, with mics, it opened up a lot. It was a lot of fun. But it was a lot of fun, because we were pratting around while doing what needed to be done. We were messing around, getting chests, laughing at getting rare chests that fill your boat up with water so you have to keep getting the bucket out, laughing at trying to find obvious chest locations that just did not want to play ball... I had a lot of fun.

HOWEVER...

This game is the classic bare bones (no pun intended) example of what not to do. Yes. I had fun. But has that fun got sea legs? No... I can say with certainty it hasn't. Unlike some games, lets Say The Division, you are not in control for 90% of the time. You have a boat, and that means most of your time is spent sailing to the next destination. Which is, quite frankly, boring. Yes it can be funny when your friend gets the sails wrong, catches the wind, and makes you circle the island 8 times. But... And? I mean... And what? What else? Locking up people in the brig? Throwing up on deck? Its just wasted, on so many levels.

The enemy variety is something Rare need to be hung for. One mob? ONE? Oh sorry, sometimes they wear a bandana, or a hat, or have a gun... Wow.... That's... What? That's awful? You're telling me, in a game that looks this good, with designs this good, you don't have huge spiders, crazy wildlife, monsters, tribes and all sorts... you have... skeletons... And not just any skeletons. Dumb, easy to kill skeletons that don't really do anything? That's very poor.

The actual gameplay itself has a solid foundation, but man, there are zero features to it. There's nothing. I disagree completely with the lack of progression. Sure they want everybody to be "the same", but hell, not even a viewable pirate rank? I can't upgrade my weapons once I pay the quite frankly stupid gold for them?

And the gold...? What the hell? It would take you hours upon hours to buy just lets say half a dozen things. The game simply doesn't have that much gameplay time in it. So its a chicken and egg situation there. There's not enough to do, so you don't get enough gold.

My suggestions, from what I've played, which may go against what they want. But they are suggestions none the less:

- Viewable player rank next to name take as a culmination of your 3 main stats.
- Lower prices of, well, everything.
- Make more exotic loot, something you can find on an island, something rare. It could be very good, very powerful, very accurate, but also temporary. Maybe a weapon you can collect, however you can chose to store it on your ship and use it later? Lets say you are being boarded, well, head to the captains cabin and pull your flaking sword of souls off the wall and take them on.
- Ditch that good awful character selection process, and allow you to change visual appearance at will ingame at any stage.
- Allow a way for newbies to play their own mode with fast travel. However, limit fast travel to one location, and don't allow chests to be transported over.
- Give players a way to hold, or buy, a map. A holdable map, that will be at a set zoom level of the local area.
- The quest maps? left trigger flips the page, that's great. But 99% of maps have nothing on the back. Switch this so that it brings the map up to your face nice and close. I play on a 4k 65" tv and i struggle to see the details.
- Add more things for single players to do. As in... anything. Add some random NPC questlines. Add some ghost ships that have skeletons on them, that have loot. Random things in the world to keep you engaged.
- Fix the performance on the X. Seriously. The screen tearing is some of the worst, and the frame rate in some cases chugs along. That's not a good showcase for the X.
- Just add more content!!

Do some of these and you will help give it legs a lot more. But sadly, i don't think this is the type of game rare want. I think they want to give you a sandbox to just have fun in... The problem is, the sandbox is 90% covered in water, so I can't really do anything other than get eaten by sharks...

Sounds like management screwed up. 4 years to make a 1st party game is a lot of money, someone is getting fired.

I'm sure some people will heavily disagree, but I wish they had taken the crafting approach with this game. Skeleton bones, snake skins, spider sacs, chicken eggs, ect, could be drops that get crafted into other items. That would at least make you feel like there was some reason to actually be interacting with these creatures on the islands.

As of now, the only reason to ever kill a skeleton is because it's annoying when you're digging up a chest. The only reason to kill a snake is if it's on a stairway and you just physically can't avoid it. There's just no reason to actually engage with anything so the islands might as well just be lifeless.

It's interesting to hear the behind the scenes development stuff, and you can tell it rings true when playing the game. I think Gavin Stevens Gavin Stevens pretty much nailed it in this thread. It's pretty and it can be fun, insanely fun and funny at time, but also bare bones and lacking. There's so much here that could be done, it's really surprising they missed the boat [pun] as it were to all of the gameplay possibilities they apparently passed up on. I can literally think of 100 things that would make it better. :/

But, at the same time, like I said, there is fun to be had here with a gaggle of laughs. So, for $20 for 3 months of Game Pass, I would recommend it. $60, definitely not.

p.s. THE WATER omg

I think some gameplay elements can be fun if you play with friends, atleast for a while. However, there seem to be some major flaws and plain laziness when it comes to the worldbuilding. I'm sure that it works just fine if you want to mess around for a couple of hours but I don't think this is the console seller Microsoft was hoping for.

Unless he's bound by an NDA (in which case, utter stupidity), it's perfectly OK legally to do this.

Now professionally, especially if he's ever thinking about working in the industry (in any major studio), it pretty much is a career suicide. But who knows, perhaps he found something else to do he likes more.

Count me in on your 90 degrees...I said some things too but...

The thin content, zero progression and thread bare multiplayer options are killing this fast for me.

After watching Black Sails and all of the "Pirates" films I can only sit back and try to understand how such great lore, deep traditions and crazy tech of that time period were left out of this game...There are more missed opportunities in this game than any other I can recently remember.

-You could have 20 different ship types at least with upgrade-able parts
-A hundred + different weapons in classes
-Pirate classes
-Gear that matters...Armor, multi gun rigs, improved compasses, better shovels etc
-NPCs with meaningful side quests that are voiced
-Roving Skeleton Pirate ships
-Ghosts, Gypsies, Dead Men, Sirens, White Whales etc...
-Raid Ships and Dungeon-like islands
-Multiplayer that would allow for more than 4 people co-op across multiple ships
-Player driven Factions and clans
-Other modes of play-Ship battles, base siege, capture the chicken etc...
-The British or a military armada roaming around
-Nassau like ports
-UUUUUUGH!!!!!!

This game had expectations that were very high from almost everyone, and the core game play is fun with friends, but ultimately, what a letdown it is. I trust ACG and Dreamcast guy and I also tend to agree with them at this point. The Reddit post from the ex developer throws gas on the fire too...How can Rare add to and make this game more meaningful at this point? They obviously had trouble even getting it to where it is and without adding some very serious content, I fear this game is dead in the water..

I'm starting to think maybe Fable Legends would have been more feature complete than this if the studio shutter had been the other way around.

If there was a deep single player with this multi aspect added on then I dont think people would have much of a reason to complain as it would be an after thought

This really does feel empty even with the little bit I played. I loved Viva Piñata and it kept me really busy, what happened with this? This game also has a nice family appeal to it but so far it's a missed opportunity. I can't help feel this is another Destiny or Man's Sky, lots of potential held back by lack of content.

I find the game charming but extremely shallow and I feel like an idiot paying a full $60 for this. It really sparks my imagination in regards to what this game could become. I feel like if there was an actual game with cities, moving NPC's, a storyline, etc and the game that is currently Sea of Thieves was built into that, it would be amazing. I love the universe they have created here but as it is now, I don't see myself playing much beyond maybe 10 more hours and logging in occasionally to see any updates.

I have a lot of respect for RARE but I do not see how this game took them 4 years to make with the size of their staff. I truly WANT to like this game, same as I did with No Man's Sky, but in its current state I just can't defend or argue against any of these negative scores it is receiving.

100% this. in a year it will be all patched up (ala no man's sky) but the world will have moved on.

Its table scraps. a beautiful fun framework with nothing to hang on it.

Unfortunately, that's not how corporations work. They worry about money more than their players. If the game doesn't do well, Microsoft won't be interested in continuing support for it.

They'll put a skeleton crew on it and ride out the game in its current state. No Man's Sky is indie, and they have integrity, so they supported their game despite the negativity at launch.
