Spiderman or Tomb Raider?

Got some Amazon vouchers that I haven't spent which means I can buy one game.

Out of everything that's being released, these are the two that interest me more - Spiderman and TR.

Thing is, both of them have disappointed me in the past.

Spiderman games last gen weren't great and I'm worried that they will follow modern design features for open world games which I'm very tired of (Ass creed, Saints Row, , Watchdogs, Witcher, Just Cause, Far Cry et al). So I'm worried I'll get bored in a few hours.

TR I can usually make last for longer but the current reboot series is quite far from what I want from a TR game and I've become bored with the Uncharted linear corridor, play-replay till you beat the area design.

What would you go for?

The known gameplay of TR that will last longer but likely disappoint in the long run?
or
The unkown of Spiderman that could bore me after a handful of hours?

Decisions, decisions......

If you are already afraid that you will get bored rather quickly due to disappointing previous games, maybe you should get neither.

Nothing I've seen on Spiderman so far got me down of my hype horse.

TR on the other hand doesn't seem like it's bringing anything new for the table.

I can't say I'm super hyped for either but I prefer Spiderman. I was thinking that the game would be more like a infamous second son in open world type of game than the suggestions you mentioned which I actually liked and was hoping would have a sequel for. The Tomb Raider game like someone said earlier will probably be discounted by quite a bit later this year.

most Gaffers will suggest Spiderman for obvious reasons, but since you were disappointed by both games in the past, i suggest you skip both and save the money for October games

Well, good luck getting spider man on amazon unless you buy digital currency. But I would vote spider man. Mostly because we have had two tomb raider games that are pretty much the same thing. I don’t expect the third to be any different. Not saying it will be a bad game. Just more of the same.

The Spider-Man game is most likely going to be the definitive Spidey game. Think arkham series level of quality.

I‘d go with Spidey and grab TR during a sale 3 months after launch.

If you can only buy one and are unsure, then I would just wait to see how GAF and other sources you like react.

When are the reviews dropping? If before release date, you could just see the general response to Spiderman and then decide whether or not to buy it and if not, go for Tomb Raider.

If the previous Tomb Raider games didn't do it for you, then why bother the new one will be more of the same game that didn't do it for you?

Past Spider-Man games have nothing to do with this one. This is made by Insomniac Games, and is an entirely different beast.

You're not worried about TR following modern design trends? That's the entire reason I avoid that game, it looks like a paint by numbers Third Person shooter I've seen a trillion times before. Stealth mechanics, a bow, cover shooting, I mean it looks like Uncharted with very little differentiating them in my mind. I couldn't care less.

At least Spider-Man has the potential to be a stand-out superhero game, it's been a long time since we had a great Spidey game and this looks quite good.

I like the Tomb Raider games a lot so I would get the new one myself. I’m not sure what to expect from Spider-Man yet. It looks like it could be good and probably fits the OP better.

I'd go for Spidey, because it's a fresh take on the series by a new developer who has a lot on the line, so your previous disappointment doesn't really apply*. Your previous "meh" response to Tomb Raider does apply, though, because it's the same developer, and it will be more of the same. At least with Spidey, you've got a chance to be surprised.

*except for the open-world mechanics part. I agree with you that it's becoming a little monotonous at this point. I hope we don't have to collect a bunch of stuff to craft different types of weapons and ammo.

Not hyped about either but I am definitely more curious about Spidey. Rise of the Tomb Raider was pretty disappointing.

Tomb Raider is a B franchise. I am playing the second one now (Rise? Blue box cover). Forgettable characters and story, too much Ubisoft filler, good graphics and decent combat. It's like a poor mans Uncharted IMO. Get Spiderman.

To be fair here. How long will it take spiderman to get on a high spot/building etc? Like 4 seconds?^^

Spider-man, it’s not an activision game puked out in a year. Insomniac put real love into their games.

This is my own hope as well. We're long overdue a great Marvel game & based upon what we've seen, Insomniac appear to have nailed it.

Agreed. It's a semi-competent third person shooter with a faux Tomb Raider coat of paint. Even the 'tombs' are linear & created by a dev who believes gamers have moron-tier intelligence. Fuck that.

Now, even if someone likes third person shooters (I actually do), they're going to find the rest (collectathon filler/survival instincts (aka magic vision) boring auto-climbing & bad narrative) really annoying, IMO.

Meh, I say the cinematic experience genre is dying & gamers want something far, far more in-depth. Tomb Raider's sales will reflect this trend.

TR will be like 20 bucks after a year

they all kinda play the same, just get 2013 on a flash sale for like 5 bucks - it is fun.

the new Spiderman actually looks generation defining though.

Both look very good for me. But I think I prefer Tomb Raider.

Anyway, I think I will get both. I hope the games will work correctly just like Uncharted 4.

Spiderman.

Trust me a lot.

Tomb Raider will drop the price more soon than later.

I love the new Tomb Raider games, but this is what I’m doing and why.

Sony first party games tend to stay $60 longer, the Tomb Raider games tend to hit $40 in sales a couple months after launch. I’ll beat Spider-man, sell it off and probably make enough to buy Tomb Raider in a sale.

Meh I don't see it. TR looks like the same boring crap, but I really don't see anything in Spiderman that the Arkham games didn't do just as well gameplay wise with the occasional quicktime event thrown in, which is actually a step backward, really. It looks like a game that'll get tedious to play 30% in honestly.

And what's with the ugly ass spider suit? The white logo looks terrible.

Well unless you want digital and not get that 20% discount then you will need to get Tomb Raider. Sony is pulling their shit with Amazon and hasn't made a physical version of Spiderman available for pre-order. Hence no discount.

Or you still have Best Buy GCU (mine is good through the end of the year).

Well, OP said he had Amazon credit. So, no BB. I'll be getting both though. Just pissed about the lack of availability. I don't want digital and I want the discount. I WAS going to buy Detroit but was never available for a pre-order through Amazon.

TR is day one for me. I really love the rebooted series.

Spiderman unfortunately doesn't appeal to me at all.

Spidey all the way. Not to shit on TR, as I enjoyed the reboot but I'm not in a hurry to play the next one while I can't wait to play Spider-man.

Go for Batman: Arkham City. It looks like a superb superhero game with the city traversal, fluid combat, and ingenious boss battles.

Spiderman will be a good game.

Tomb Raider will be a good game that you have already played 10 times in other games just like it.

I don't disagree about TR, but I don't see Spider-man as anything new either. Just a mix of the Batman Arkham games and Sunset Overdrive/Infamous type games with the fun traversal around a city.

I'm kind of over originality anyway. I'm 40 this year and know what I like and have more fun playing games in my usual genres and often end up disappointed and wasting time/money when I branch out. In this case, I love both these genres and they're my two most anticipated games the rest of the year. :D

There is no hope for you, I mean you are tired of linear action adventure and...open world action adventure?

You sure you like the genre, like, at all?

In any case Spider-Man is a SONY exclusive, it means AAA values. Tomb Raider not so much. And goes cheaper way sooner.

OP sounds like he is forcing himself.

I'd say wait and see OP, the games will come out and you can see what people say.

If you still aren't convinced, save the vouchers for later. If the vouchers expire and you have to pick one I'd pick Spiderman but I love open world games and superheroes.

It all depends on your taste and what you like but on my end, I won't be getting Tomb Raider at all (not a big fan of the games) and will be getting Spiderman day one!!!! It just looks like its going to be so much fun and the open world, traversal, web-slinging just looks like its going to add so much replayability. If a world is done right i never get tired of exploring it.

Also, you just know that there's going to be a Spiderman revision game that they release with the next Marvel movie that actually addresses all the inevitable problems with the first game. The first revisions of games are often the best ones: they're polished but still fresh enough where everything hasn't got completely old.
