Marvel's 'Spider-Man' sold a record 3.3 million copies in the first three days of its release

Spider-Man is an extremely popular IP that was destined to succeed. First of all, the developers put Easter eggs on purpose to generate buzz about the game. Second of all, everyone you know and their grandmother knows about Spider-Man. Compare that to God of War, which isn’t too popular. Third of all, Insomniac put effort into the game and it was obvious they cared for the game.

Sony’s limits for games are extremely high, which is why most of their exclusive games are well produced. It draws in people who hate Sony for anti-consumerism. I buy each and every one of their consoles because of games like Spider-Man. Sony, as much as I hate them for cross-play and backwards compatibility, wants to stop EA’s attacks on the gaming industry for saying “Multiplayer is the only money maker Sony”. I enjoy good games, but Spider-Man hits best for me. There’s Easter eggs for me to discover, I know what Spider-Man is, and it evokes a feeling of enjoyment throughout the game.

Great news. It did better than God of War. I have only played the game for few hours but I have liked it so far.

The game was amazing. Definitely deserved the sales. I had 3 day rental through Redbox and had to fly through it. Will buy it on black Friday most likely with God of war. I need to get the platinum on both games

That's like 3x what Sunset Overdrive sold in it's lifetime ;)

Spider-Man, Spider-Sells,
It's the home where money dwells
Spins a web, sales arise,
Pushes records to new heights
Look Out!
Here comes the Spider-Man.

Maybe studio growth and two teams now?
I'm not betting on this unfortunately. They are nor first party nor owners of the license...I would love them to grow and do some more Ratchet and Sunset Overdrive but I'm betting on them to focus on the next Spidey...

Normal because is Spiderman, everyone like Spiderman.

Good for Insomniac!!

This is going to be the hugest game on PS4. Spiderman is everywhere. Bingo for Sony!

Not for me.

Gravity rush 1 and 2 are the best game of PS4, Spiderman is 2nd best game of PS4.

Amazing game, well deserved sales.

I wonder which superhero MS will make exclusive.

I bet Xbox players wish they had supported Sunset Overdrive this well. Now it looks like Insomniac will become synonymous with PlayStation again.

Very deserving, with the city already built maybe they can put a bit more work into the missions/story for the enxt game

To be fair, Sunset Overdrive was a new IP, compared to a game featuring one of the most popular superheroes out there, and Overdrive came out less than a year after the Xbox One was released, while Spider-Man's potential audience was ~80 million.

Insomniac deserved a big success. Despite a few misses, it's an amazing studio. I still remember when they were able to turn out one quality game a year (and with a 60fps target). Spider-Man is no doubt their best game yet.

I vaguely remember rumors about a Sony acquisition from back then. I wonder if there is a high chance this could happen now.

I am shocked it didn't sell better than it did. I found Sunset Overdrive to be a fantastic game. I bet you are right though. I can see Insomniac sticking with Sony for awhile. They might even be purchased by Sony. If I were in charge of studio purchases for Sony I would definitely try to get Insomniac.

Sony might like that, but they're not for sale, especially now. They're smarter than selling out.

Maybe you should have supported Sunset Overdrive? I did and it's a fantastic early gen game.

Congrats to Insomniac, it's well deserved.

...lacks reading comprehension.
Sold or shipped? Cause lately we have only been getting shipped numbers, which us why games like God of War "sell" 3 million in the first days and 5 million in the first two months. It's all about pretending you have a record to get the actual sales going.

holy crap. congrats to all parties involved

yes it took batman to get to this point, but this MIGHT be the catalyst to kickstart a ton of other AAA development of comic (and other media) IPs.

just like the superhero trend in movies...i'm better we're gonna see more AAA games using already established franchises and less original.

good bye Ryse/Sunset Overdrive hello Superman/Xmen

I'm interested as to how they think this is first party? ...
This ia a 3rd party game yeah?
I get that it's published by sony... but by that logic Bayonetta is first party nintendo, and Street fighter 5 is 1st party to sony... Did sony buy Insomniac overnight?

These distinctions were always a bit fuzzy. (Remember "second party"?) But I see what you're getting at. The coupling seems even a little tighter than Bayonetta-Nintendo here.

It is good to know that the game was success, but I wish it was more polished.
The glitches were very funny to watch, but it isn't cool to sell an unfinished product and fix the bugs later with patches.
The bloopers in movies are shown during the closing credits not during the movie. The video games standards have never been lower... why it isn't a gold standard for games too?

This was supposed to be a niche game, right?

After all, who in hell knows and loves the most popular superhero ever?(Yes, including Bats and Sups)

Congrats to Insomniac who made a great game, with compelling story, excellent combat and traversal and that botched only the rinse and repeat of most side stuff.
I have 100%ed the game, and still have two hidden "items" to unlock.

Probably haven't gone too far into the story (I'm at 30% complete but I'm exploring a ton, I already have 40+ backpacks already for example) but this game is a blast so far. I think at least at this point God of War is still GOTY for me but Spider-man is a strong #2 for now.

If they have enough plans for a sequel that warrants it, go for it. Certainly I would love to play the option of Miles and/or Spider-Gwen (note: if this actually does happen later in the first game, please do not spoil. Thank you). Obviously there's plenty of other Marvel characters they could tackle (heck, 10 years ago a AAA Black Panther or Guardians of the Galaxy game would seem impossible, now with the box office results it just screams for somebody to make it happen) but I don't mind them sticking with Spidey for a little while longer.
