I don't follow the whole Sonic homebrew scene too closely, so maybe this is old news, but it certainly came as a nice surprise to me. Given the success of Mario Kart on the SNES, I always expected a Sonic Kart to come to my beloved Mega CD (with its superior scaling chips), but unfortunately it never happened. Well, this is the next best thing. In the developers' own words:
"SRB2Kart is a classic styled kart racer, complete with beautiful courses, and wacky items. Of course, because it’s SRB2Kart, it has a Sonic twist that really shows the classic charm that a lot of us know and love from the good old days™.
We have 100 jam-packed maps for you to bump, explode, and sparkle your way through, from luscious beaches, to Eggman’s dance floor, to England on a good day. All lovingly crafted by many different people. You’ll notice almost every aspect of the game has an immense love and inspiration from the classic sonic games. From the items such as Ballhog, which literally throws bouncey explodey balls at people, to the maps which are bursting with that Sonic feel."
Trailer:
I've been messing about with it for the past half an hour and, despite not be able to get it working with my USB controller, it plays really well. I only have a regular laptop with integrated Intel HD graphics and it runs perfectly. Given there are over 100 tracks, some are obviously better than others, but the overall quality is pretty good. I particularly like the Green Hill and Mountain Top zones.
You can download it here.
With Sonic Team Racing being delayed until next year, hopefully this can tide people over until then.
