So over the years, since Xbox introduced a system implemented Achievement system, Sony brought in Trophies, which at first were garbage but now are pretty good the last several years and are enjoyed by many. Nintendo with the Wii U, introduced accomplishments.

Xbox chgned things up so you can get gear and free games through it's system and Sony has implemented a more visual dashboard and a Platinum to reward you for getting all objectives finished. Nintendo also has a system called Accomplishments.

Pretty much all of the Achievements and Trophies are in mostly all games on their respective platforms making them integrate with one another, and making them not seem arbitrary. Nintendo had a system in some of their games, they call this system Accomplishments.

So the question is which system do you prefer? Please tell us why in a post you picked your answer.

None of them really anything. I think WoW came the closest to making those in game things worthwhile by rewarding with titles but even that didn't go far enough.

I'm okay with trophies on PS4 still, however I don't really care about that stuff on PC these days since I use like 5 different apps for games. Battle.net, Steam, Origin, Windows Store, Epic.

I cant say I love a single one. The rarity info has gotten me to spend more doing platinums than I did during the ps3 days though.

As for accomplishments I actually liked being able to use miiverse as a diary as I documented my progress to 100% more than the accomplishments themselves. Nintendo's achievement/accomplishment design being garbage has a lot to do with that.

I still don't care lol. But I do read what they are usually because there are often some funny jokes or interesting trophy names or something. Like the No Man's Sky trophies had a lot of references to old sci-fi books, I thought those were cool. But I never really care to get them.

Troooophiiiiies. I measure how much I liked a game by how driven I feel to get the platinum. I also hate when they put online/mp only trophies in games that are single player driven (Looking at you RDR2). Not going to lie, this single thing is going to make me wait to get the game until I can get it at a good discount, as I don't buy any games at full price unless I feel confident I'll like it enough to go for the plat!

Matter of fact I'm we brought up this topic because I'd like to know how much development time is spent on this because all that time can be cut out.

I could'nt care less if they exist or not and I've never chased them at all.......but I do enjoy the ping of a trophy.

they changed my life. all those cheevos made me a better man, made me move out of my mom's basement and buy a hyundai sonata

but nah i was always a little puzzled why it was "a thing", even with games i'm super into. it's even kind of a mild annoyance really, but it's there and not super intrusive so whatever

I like the one big number with Xbox. All the different trophy numbers seem weird to me. I have Switch and don’t even know what Accomplishments are.

Agreed. Trophies are pretty lame. Not that the Achievements are all that great, but the gamer score tells a much better story, IMO.

are in a big trouble
Can't remember what game it was but when you put the disk in it gave you an achievement as a joke obviously.

For me personally don't care about them. If a game is good enough were I want to complete it and do all the extras I will however I don't go looking to see what I need to do to unlock a trophy/achievement.

I like both but I prefer achievments. I do wish we could get something for doing a base game 100% like a platinum trophy though. Maybe next gen. It sucks when you get 1000/ 1000 then dlc comes out and it 1000/1350. With Sony u get platinum trophy for base game but for ps it sucks there is no plat for dlc at same time

Achievements were a big thing to me back when I started playing Xbox 360. Nowadays I care less about them, I'm tired of doing crazy shit just to unlock some achievement.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I kinda like them all, honestly.

For PC players there are also Steam achievements (though it's just a "number of unlocked achievements" without a score or ranking so it's pretty basic) as well as GOG achievements as the big players.
For retro enthusiasts I definitely recommend RetroAchievements.org which is now integrated into RetroArch on several platforms. RA adds achievements to retro video games (Atari 2600 - N64) and the sets are made and voted on by the community.

I like Trophies but it's mainly because I started collecting them back in 2008 with the PS3. I can see how both arguments for and against them can have valid points.

For me I like them because I feel like I get more bang for my buck for certain games. For example, back in 2008 I played Bioshock (the PS3 port) and came away impressed by the narrative and visual story telling but I felt that the gameplay felt flat. One of the trophies in order to get the platinum was to finish the game on the hardest difficulty with Vita chambers off.

That trophy run completely changed my view on the gameplay of that game. I was forced to use all of my plasmids at my disposal and be crafty instead of just running and gunning like I did in my prior playthrough.

I don't chase down "easy" trophies but I always do look at the list before starting a game I've bought and consider factors such as how much I like the game and how much time I have to go for it. Some games I just need that shiny platinum so I will chase down or invest the time needed.

Pokemon Go has a god tier achievement system. Doing the Achievement tasks gets you *stuff* which helps you gets *stuff* that is needed to get better Pokemon which gives you more XP. So good

For me, it is Trophies. I loved achievements when they first came out on Xbox and was confused by how Sony Handled it. However, as time went on I grew to enjoy the trophies more and more. Being able to clearly separate DLC and the "base" game's Trophies were fantastic and something I still wish Microsoft would do.

I also hated how Microsoft handled the achievements in the Xbox One. Gone were the days of a clean, easy to get to, and simple design and instead we got these ugly, massive Xbox Wallpaper... things and them being buried underneath multiple menus (especially near the launch of the console).

Still wish Nintendo would add an account-bound achievement/trophy system. Always loved them and they add longevity and new ways to play games that I probably wouldn't have done (as well as some nice challenges). But fuck multiplayer trophies.

I prefer the Xbox achievements. I just wish more games came with unique backgrounds rather than copy and paste with a different symbol.

I don't actually strive to get trophies, but I do like the chime a lot. I wish PS4's chime was as loud as PS3's though.

It's not much st all. The backend is fully taken care by of MS.

You literally just design the achievements list, a coder puts the hooks in code so they trigger. Then they need testing of course.

In my experience the most time was just testing them, putting them in was nigh on painless.

Of course it might be different if you're trying to do something particularly different or hard with them, but otherwise, little cost to an overall project in my experience at least.

I prefer Trophies as the number of platinums in your profile gives a better indication of how many games you've totally completed compared to Xbox gamerscore which indicates very little e.g. 100,000 could be 100 completed games, or thousands of partially completed games.

Not that any of this really matters of course :messenger_grinning:

I used to love achievements from Xbox but I think MS ruined them a bit by allowing devs to add so many additional cheevos. Yes, they can do that on Playstation as well but there you kinda have this overarching Platinum trophy.

That said, after loosing steam for the whole system I really got back into it at the end of 2016 and have had super fun with it ever since. Because unlike the achievement boosting I used to do all the time, I only do it for very specific games now. So every time I buy a new game now I'll check out the tophies and how hard they are attainable. If they're easy and fun, I get the game for PS4. If not, I get the game for PC. That way I can play all the games I want and even get more out of the ones that I buy for PS4 because the trophy hunt always spices it up a bit for me.

And I also play loads of older games without any trophies whatsoever on older systems (PS2, PSone, GC etc.) so I don't get stuck in that trophy circle. So yeah, moderation was the key for me. Back in the 360 days I used to go like: Boost one game to 100% and then move to the next. Even play shitty games to get all the cheevos. Never again.

Trophies.

Proud of my 83 plats.

Voted I don't care.

They're fun but not something I'll aim for unless I'm really enjoying the game.

Indeed. If I really dig a game then I might go for 100% achievement, but its gotta be a really charming game. I think sometimes there's not a lot of respect for players time sewn into achievements also, and that for me is a real negative. Sure, they're not necessarily supposed to be easy, but they also shouldn't require several counter-intuitive playthroughs to get them all either. Especially in games that are lengthy already.

I used to truly love trophies. I spent time researching and planning out a game before starting. I have 64 plats now and 9500 trophies overall. I think I'm going to detach from them, though. I'm not fond of Sony now and that sort of breaks the value of trophies, especially since I play the type of games that are being censored which incentivizes me to get the games on another platform. I still love them but I don't want to get too attached to them should they change in the future or go away entirely. For now I'll only go after them if I love the game enough.

Achievements for me. The original, the best.

However I do think we need a re-think of these next generation. I was really hoping Nintendo would actually do something here with the switch. Adding a Miiverse to Switch, with games having their own achievements, but each unlocking a sticker to use, was such an obviously easy and Nintendo thing... but they cocked it up. They cocked it all up.

Hopefully next gen all platforms get something new and expanded. I have 150k gamer points, but unlike the 360 days, nobody really even sees that. Microsoft added leader boards and things but it’s not an actual part of your dashboard. I guess that’s my issue with all three consoles this gen... there’s nothing there in your face. I loved the 360 days of having my avatar on screen when i boot up, with my achievements etc right there. Made me feel like a gamer. Now everything is so buried and hidden away, it’s all pointless.

Trophies are achievements, but better and more meaningful mostly because of the Platinum trophy.

You can easily and visibly tell the number of times a player has 100% the trophy list. You can't with achievements because you just see a number, which doesn't tell which achievements have been 100% completed.

Trophies suck, when you reach a certain trophy level your level progression basically halts because bronze and silver trophies are worthless at some point. Achievements are way better, 300 achievement points are always worth 300 points, wether you have 1000 or 10.000 achievement points in total.

I didn't know nintendo had a achievements system, seems like they are finally doing some homework.

Ninten-dont have one. Sorry couldn’t resist the cheese.

It’s a shame they didn’t do a system wide thing. But like everything Nintendo does, they are a generation or two behind the times. So expect them next gen.
