As we continue as a community to work on this community, I wanted to hear from new and returning members. We'd also love to hear from the lurkers... but how can we? Maybe create an account

What's stopping you new members from participating or being active? Same goes for old returning members, whats stopping you from being active?

What can we do to increase your willingness to be active?

And why were you lurking instead of signing up?

For me, I was a lurker for many years for 2 reasons.

1) I didn't feel the need to contribute. The forum was so active that I felt my contribution would be lost easily.
2) NeoGAF can be somewhat intimidating imo. Global Community with many different opinions.

I just want to hear from you so we as a community can get the feedback necessary to improve and fix the reasons you hesitate to participate.

I would ask that the feedback be respectful. Nothing hateful or trollish.

Well this account is a new one about 2 years after my old one was banned for "vilifying a game journalist". I signed up again because I felt as though I could express my opinion after the split. It's true, I can act like a pissant and I take my licks when I act out of line, but I didn't like the old mentality of "you have the wrong opinion therefore banned". I can still be a pissant but at least other users can call me out or argue with me without fear of reprisal. Before they just sicced the mods on people they didn't like.

I didnt post for a number of reason before. Mods where to aggressive with stapping out anyone that did not go with the flow, Now i can actually talk with people without the fear of getting banned (well that is if i do something dumb)

Also I didnt post a lot cause most of my posting comes from my phone, and I got big sausage fingers. It is a pain in the ass to reply on moble. I have fixed this problem though and you all are fucked now cause i got a wireless keyboard, and plan to post more often.

I never really left, but took a break a year ago when things got heated and re-evaluated my internet use and what a forum does for me (and vice versa).

So I don't post regularly any more, though I still visit. I guess also part of it is that the communities I was active in largely moved on. And I didn't move with them.

Temp banned at Era for BS so I said fuck them this is Gaf all over again. I was banned during Gamergate for making fun of Revolution 60. Came back after my Era ban because I heard the place was cleaning itself up a bit. It's much nicer here now.

Well thats the society we live in, people are guilty from any accusation even if it eventually is proven false, people still hang onto that accusation forever. The old Gaf mods wouldnt have even let you point it out that an accusation COULD be false from a woman. But i agree, I think we should have those stickied along with the unbanning thread

As a returning member, I originally left in 2017 during the meltdown, I followed the migration of most posters I knew, via Discords. GAF was down, a new place was up, posters were there. Truth to be told, I was ready for a new place, with a fresh start. The moderation on GAF had become increasingly hostile in the last few years, and I had started to feel like I was always walking on eggshells when posting on GAF. Remember, back in then there was no warning system in place so an unpopular opinion could land a ban very easily.

Why I came back was that upon an extended lurking evening I noticed that during the year, GAF itself had become the fresh start that GAF needed. Moderation seemed now to resemble the GAF I participated in 2002-2008, OT was restored, activity was growing - quite the turnaround. It was nice that I was able to spot some familiar names I had interacted with for over a decade.

I hadn’t returned earlier because I had heard GAF was dead / ghost town / alt right haven. Once I had a look myself, I felt that those assessments seemed dishonest and that this could be a chill place to post again.

From about 2013 (beginning of the end according to The Coddling of the American Mind) to the ResetEra split, NeoGAF must've banned... one million or so posters. I have to assume that this may have turned off a fair many people, and whatever improvements have been made since the crazies opened their own asylum may not be enough to win back that trust. For instance, I've had several people insinuate (and flat out say) that I may be a secret Nazi (including one mod), and boy doesn't that feel like a healthy discussion environment. BUT! I didn't get banned despite being presumed a secret Nazi, so I can definitely say that GAF has improved in at least that way.

Personally, I'm not interesting in getting my old account back, but there is a worry that if I even admitted that I had one, my new account would get banned for ban evasion. If that's not the case, maybe this should be more clearly communicated to people on the fence. And if it is the case, well, I guess I just made a big mistake. If you don't see me again, so long and thanks for all the likes.

Hopefully there isn't any truth to the fear. It would be extremely petty if either Community was punishing their members for posting at another site.

I think the community is working on that. We need to have more respect for each other even when completely disagree. Give us time to get this right. I truly believe that we will have many leaders step up and lead by example. I sincerely hope we can show you this.

Completely understand. It felt like a head ache coming here months before Oct. 2017. At least for me. I went back to lurking. Walked back in here after Oct. 2017 like I just came out the Fallout Vault lol.

I just never could bring myself to leave this place behind. This place really has done so much for so many people over the years. I truly believe it is worth investing in as a community and is a second family for me. I don't have much family. My Mother is died, my Father is a shithead, only 1 grand parent left. NeoGAF is my favorite thing in my daily life behind my family and Baseball lol.

What goes on at any other site is meaningless to me imo. We have to give Gaffers a reason to come here. And I believe that continuing to build this awesome community, the incredible staff, the well designed and working site will be what brings people here and keeps them here. And it is my belief that there are tons of people who want to contribute, but aren't willing to skip the first rock.

That's the purpose of the Volunteers program. I hope it's successful because 1) I care about his community 2) I want to be able to disband it and retire from it lol. It's been a lot of work, but very fulfilling.

I will say however that while we can see some "good" coming from it, its been Evilore that has had to go through all the drama. I imagine it's incredibly hurtful to go through what he did. Many of the people that trashed him and still trash him regularly were people he called friends. Its crazy to think so many people who swear they are compassionate and all about feelings can have zero for someone that gave them so much.

It's incredibly easy to make a website and run a community where you are the protected group. Where your group is the most oppressed on the planet and also protected group in the community you build. Like me running a forum for only Washington Nationals fans as a fan myself. That's incredibly self serving.

But when you have a community where you allow oppressed groups protection and a place to call home, while allowing your group to be public enemy #1... thats pretty selfless.

The irony of the whole thing is the people who consider him the enemy has done less for the oppressed groups they are part of or trying to help compared to him.

And that was a huge problem with NeoGAF and the internet overall imo. We have forgot that everyone is... a person. I know people come back here wanting to know what he said, its already posted here but asking him to continue to repeat everything can wear a person done. We need to remember that everyone is a human being and treat them as such.

This of course is all my opinion and thought and only represents myself.

ERA was predicable. It was going to be mostly old GAF.

I still think this community needs to move on from the ERA stuff. The quarantine thread a la The Bore is fine. But I don't think there should be this supervillian obsession with ERA.

GAF is miles better than it’s been for years and I am really enjoying my time here right now. There are so many wonderful people that I have gotten to know and we can converse like adults. It’s refreshing. In comparison, oldGAF just felt like noise. A million people trying to out scream eachother to ultimately no end.

Lurkers out there, do yourselves a favour. Dip a toe. The water’s great.

Believe me, as a former ERA member that fear is real. It is one of the few forums that mindspeak to you. I see it as a huge experimentation venture to mess the human mind. Damage is irreversible. If the catechism fails, you are pushed aside or banned.

I also don't agree that the place is too slow, a criticism I see leveled every now and again. Before the unpleasantness, it was a chore trying to keep track of a discussion. I like the current activity rate.

Yeah, it must require pretty extraordinary mental resilience to pull through being breaking news on the likes of Rolling Stone. I probably would have vanished from public eye altogether. I am quite astonished that here we are here, on an incresingly lively and reborn GAF, discussing this.

I think the circumstances created as much a perfect storm as there can be. The escalating moderating actions and dog piling of members on members with “wrong opinions’ had started to annoy many posters, at least myself. The downwards spiral started from the European migration “crisis”, and all hell was let loose with Trump becoming POTUS.

When the 'incident' was broadcasted, it made all that recent virtue posturing feel hypocritical, and people got to let out all that pent up steam by giving the finger. That's what most of the account suicide threads were here, in my opinion. For many members, it didn’t probably even matter whether the incident was true, false, or ambiguous.

For that reason, I think many members will find their way back here, like I did.

Remember, back in then there was no warning system in place so an unpopular opinion could land a ban very easily.

Why I came back was that upon an extended lurking evening I noticed that during the year, GAF itself had become the fresh start that GAF needed. Moderation seemed now to resemble the GAF I participated in 2002-2008, OT was restored, activity was growing - quite the turnaround. It was nice that I was able to spot some familiar names I had interacted with for over a decade.

I hadn’t returned earlier because I had heard GAF was dead / ghost town / alt right haven. Once I had a look myself, I felt that those assessments seemed dishonest and that this could be a chill place to post again.

Out of curiosity, how do you think it gained that alt right haven reputation?

Some returning members were used to and frankly liked the previous moderation. That moderation shut down speech that didn’t mirror the agenda. Some people like their agreement boards.

In certain circles around the internet, anything right of left is Alt Right. Makes you wonder what the Alt even means if it’s all Alt Right lol. Wouldn’t it just be Right?

Just like everyone left of right is NPC.

The truth is Alt Right is a reputation of NeoGAF that isn’t true. But is a result of the reputation that was true of NeoGAF... ridiculous agenda driven moderation. Silencing opposition, in this case, leads to the wild spreading of lies. It’s easy to consider anyone who disagrees with you as the enemy. Especially if they can’t defend themselves against the attacks.

I've said this before, but it's not a matter of censoring anyone's ideas and beliefs, but upholding some basic civilizational ideals and achievements, like women's rights, black rights and lgbt rights. You know, everyone's right to have basic rights. Just basic stuff to keep the forum healthy. I'm sure the usual crowd will start screaming for proof or send pms calling me an sjw or some shit like that. I know how it works.

I am currently getting my oldest from school. Then haircuts for 2 of them. But when I get back home, I’ll give you my time and proper response.

But I would like to understand how current GAF is not giving anyone their basic rights. Imo that was old GAF restricting basic rights.
