The details of Microsoft's plans for Scarlett are still a bit foggy but one thing seems certain, it will support USB-C

I don't see what you mean USB-C is more secure as USB2.0/3.0 is now got a unpatchable hardware vuln on it.

I think he means USB-C was inevitable.

Take the following with a grain of salt.

From Wccftech:

According to Brad Sams at Thurrott [...], Microsoft is working on no less than four new Xbox SKUs, all of which have their own codenames.

Scarlett is the umbrella codename for all of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox projects. It doesn’t refer to any one specific console.

1. One, codenamed Anaconda, is the next-gen equivalent of the Xbox One X – a powerful machine for enthusiasts

2. The other Scarlett console is codenamed Lockhart, and it’s designed to be the equivalent of the Xbox One S – a less-expensive option for the more mainstream gamer.

3. Microsoft is planning to release a disc-less streaming-only console codenamed Maverick.

4. Finally, Microsoft is also prepping another revision of the Xbox One S – this version of the console will be redesigned to reduce manufacturing costs and be focused largely on xCloud streaming, but it will still have a traditional disc drive. Expect it in 2019.

Both Anaconda and Lockhart are expected to launch sometime in 2020. Maverick may arrive as soon as Spring of 2019, although plans may change.

I am not against this by far but if the console makers are going to release "new" versions of the console every other year why not just get a PC? I can understand slightly for the Playstation due to exclusives but all Xbox exclusives come to PC anyway.

I like the choice, I cant lie. I'm going with X equivalent and cloud if it really works.

This doesn't seem like a smart move from MS in my opinion. The thing that made the Xbox One X great is that it didn't and "couldn't" have been released in 2013. Literally, the feature set that it has didn't exist then. And if it had, the box would have cost like $800+ lol.

Is it possible MS is just trying to do every option, just to make sure they don't miss? And then whatever is the most popular, is the console they'll focus on the most?

I actually like what MS is proposing. They are going to have the super low end (x1\streaming), low end (Lockheart 1080p) and high end (Anaconda 4K) covered all at the same time. This will get the Scarlett base price lower than PS5. The CPU for Scarlett will obviously be using Ryzen for both consoles which makes a huge difference for Lockheart. It won't just be a rebranded X1X. A Ryzen CPU has a much higher IPC than Jaguar about (8 times).

Not everybody wants 4K. I still game at 1080p with my pc (i7 8700, 16gb, gtx 1080) and prefer higher framerates.

IIRC, i read some where about a rumor that Lockhart will match or exceed Xbox One X in terms of power and Anaconda will be much more powerful.

I think Lockheart will exceed Xbox One X as far as cpu power especially with Ryzen as a base. However, I imagine the gpu will be similar as far as TF. Also, AMD has a very scalable architecture.

So my theory is:

Lockheart:
8 core Ryzen 3.2Ghz
16GB Ram
6-8 TF GPU based on Navi
1080p, 1440p/4k (CBR) for Scarlett Games
4K for Xbox One games

Anaconda:
8 core Ryzen 3.2Ghz
24GB Ram
10-12 TF GPU based on Navi
4K for Scarlett games
4-8K (?)for Xbox One games

Yes the CPU will be the biggest, most noticeable difference next gen, but I don't think 1080p resolution will be acceptable for even Lockhart this time around. That seems to be where Maverick comes into play, streaming at 1080p. 1440p is the bare minimum for Lockhart to succeed IMO.

I think 1440p is definitely achievable either natively or using CBR (checkerboard rendering/upscaling techniques). However, MS could also enable 4KCBR for Lockheart as well. I just put 1080p for the base since a lot of people still have 1080p tvs and 1440p monitors are mainly for PC.

I love the idea of offering more options out of the gate, but in my mind if they are offering the X2 at launch, is there really a choice?

Do they even need a console dedicated to streaming ? Wouldn't a regular Xbox One be able to handle it, since all the stress is on the server (and internet connection) ?

I think the old Xbox One and X will be repurosed as a classic console streaming box. It keeps everybody together.

Yes, the difference will probably be 4Kcb and 4K native(and beyond) between the two dedicated consoles.

XboxOne X will probably be forwards compatible for the first few years of next gen but with lower framerates. Xbox One S/OG, I'm not so sure they'll make the transition at all.

Maverick is such a Trojan horse. "Hey guys buy this console and pre-pay for our service and when you see those $5 disc games, kick yourself. And when you want to sell your console, good for us you pre-paid!"

I don't mind sheeple being conned, but if enough people do this the whole industry will move to this shitty future.

Giveing people options is great. Still gonna be the most high end console and with all the new studios makeing great exclusives microsoft is gonna kill it next gen

I doubt they mean the premium version launching at the same time as the base model, just that they are looking into it i would of thought.

Not sure that launching with 4 SKUs is the greatest of ideas.

They are heading towards Sega land.

I doubt that they will be launching at the same time. The Discless Xbox One will probably launch next year. The Scarlett ones will probably launch at the same time to compete with PS5. The cloud versions will be compatible with all consoles and will be released when ready. Obviously, the X1 cloud will be available earlier than scarlett.

According to the leak, they will be launching with 2 SKU's in 2020, codename Anaconda and Lockhart. Maverick and Xbox One S revision will launch in 2019, so not during the next gen launch.

Still a recipe for confused marketing.

Most likely the average retail shop(Costco, Best Buy, Walmart) will not have all the SKUs, but the most popular ones like the discless 'S' and the X successor. If you want to buy the other stuff, you go online.

Nah they will release the “standard” s model first, then start the discussion about the more “enthusiast” model about a year later.

Why get enthusiasts to only buy one console when you can get them to buy two.

I understand the first 3, but the last one is pointless. If people are only interested in streaming then they get the 3rd option. If they still want the disc then they get Lockhart, which should be able to stream of course.

I think the upcoming discless 'S' will be very popular due to the tiny size. People love tiny consoles.

People love buying, trading and borrowing discs too. If this sells, it will only be because MS is going to subsidize it to lock people into the ecosystem. Losing the ability to play discs at the same cost to the end user is lunacy.

But the premium one is the only one from that list that is more powerful than the X is now. There is no way Microsoft is launching against the PS5 with a rebadged One X.

Lockhart is NOT a repackaged X1X. It has a Ryzen CPU!!!! Ryzen is 8 times faster than Jaguar. The GPU itself may be slightly better than the X1X (6-8TF), but the CPU alone is light years better and makes a huge difference.

I think they may go with a trickle down approach when it comes to quality. Make all games for the top end console, then dumb it down for the lower consoles. Holiday 2020 is gonna be a clusterfuck of parents trying to understand what their kids want. I know that much.

Ok but the PS5 will have Ryzen too and more than 6tf so there is no way Microsoft will go with only that. Everyone who bought a One X because its the bestest most powerful console would have to buy a PS5 and I dont know why MS would go that route.

That's the reason why they are offering 2 models: The entry level Lockheart and the 10-12TF monster that is Anaconda which will most likely be more powerful than PS5.

So my theory is that MS will have both low and high end. An entry level price at $300 could possibly take teh wind of of PS5 sales if it's $400.

MS Lockheart: 6-8TF $300
PS5: 8-10TF $400
MS Anaconda: 10-12TF $500
