Gamestop closing stores?!

Well I went into my local Gamestop last night and wanted to pre-order Ace Combat 7 to pick up Friday. Walking in I notice 'closing' flyers on the door. They informed me that the store is closing this Sunday and they just found out this week. It all seemed a bit sudden and fishy since Gamestop may be sold off soon. I wonder if this has been happening with other stores in preparation for the buyout.

It IS a small store stuck in the front of a grocery store. Maybe they are shuttering small or underperforming stores.

Why would anyone celebrate somebody losing their job? I've found several good deals at GameStop through the years and have enjoyed talking to more than a few employees. No, they haven't been perfect but I would prefer more options than less.

Is there another location nearby that does more volume?

My town had 2 GameStop’s within eyesight of each other and eventually just closed the slower store.

Gamers applauding on their way into the walled garden where companies can charge whatever they want and take away the games from you without any consequences. Celebrate the downfall of physical media. You know, changing discs was to cumbersome anyway.

I love going in to EB and buying physical copies of older games for like 10 to 20ish bucks. I've played so many games in my life purely because I have been able to go buy cheap ass used copies. It's going to be harder to be a well versed gamer when you have to purchase everything brand new or wait for sales for any kind of discount.

I never had any issue with My local EBGames. I hope this not true, we already had too many stores closed down in Canada.

Removing competition for physical media stinks

Just means the market is evolving more to that digital age.

More options for consumers? Naw, I look forward to the future where I have to buy everything from Jeff Bezos.

I know many, many people hate GameStop; but I've always had some affection for them. It's fun to walk in and be surrounded by shelves of games, kiosks showing what's current and upcoming, and yes, even stacks of merch.

The employees I've chatted with usually have good taste in games, too.

I buy new as rule, but I have nothing against trading in my old games for a little (or a lot) of eShop credit; and GameStop is just great for that.

Recently purchased by *checks thread* AT-ST.

I imagine that means some downsizing. You've said it's a small store. Are you rural?

I dont get the actual hate either. If you dont like shopping there, dont. But how does a game retailer going out of business make anyone’s life better?

Like I understand hating casinos or sweatshops or Philip Morris or big pharma...but Gamestop?

Agreed. I do not shop at or even like gamestop and buy my games at a smaller local retailer.
But I hate the thought of any physical retailer dying.

Lowest trade in credit, higher used game prices, very shady tactics, paying employees nothing,

Yeah, fuck them.

While I understand that gamestop is the evil corporation. I do celebrate the fact that I can come across a diverse library that is often times cheaper or catches my attention more than a digital storefront which gets paid off to give you information from the highest bidder.

I personally do because you honestly don’t trust online stores to deliver my games in release day.

Yeah I've heard a few stories of shipping mishaps for preorders, the old 'walk into the store to pick up my pre-order' has yet to fail me.

How are they evil? They sell a product that I like to purchase, and I've never really had any problems with them.

I always seemed to want to buy the 'last copy'. They pull the disc out of the drawer and put in the case and sell it as new. If I opened a game and never played it and tried to return it, they would deem it used. Never understood how there was never some sort of class action lawsuit over that. Shady selling tactics.

I thought we got rid of the outrage culture who enjoy celebrating the suffering of others in the name of their own self-righteousness.

I'm not a fan of their trade-in policies or used game prices, either. I don't use those. I'll usually only go to GameStop when I want a more niche game I cant find at places like Best Buy. But, either way, I don't see the purpose of celebrating businesses shutting down and the lives affected by that.

I just recently went to the official site one of my favorite bands and under “merchandise” sits their latest album. Can’t help but think is this what music has become now? Will video games be the same? Will physical games only be for the diehards? It certainly looks that way.

Are you excited to see the end of physical games?

How so? There's still plenty of ways to buy physical without Gamestop. You defenders are pretty delusional.

Yep, always happened to me too. Pretty much every single time I'd shop there. And in multiple locations as well as multiple states.

Personally, I would wish for them to improve in that area, rather than want them to be driven into the ground.

Why would they change when people still mindlessly support them with interest free loans and pennies on the dollar for their used items.

GameStop just announced they were bought by at&t
No receipts, get this shit out of here.

On another note, if they don't transfer all their inventory to a different store, you can get great deals. It'll probably be for high margin items like toys, shirts, figures, accessories, but not games. I hope the employees can get transferred to a different store.

That has nothing to do with how they treat their employees. It’s obvious not many people are supporting them anymore

Can't wait for gamestop to close so ebay prices and other local chain prices can skyrocket on used games. GS sucks but they served a purpose..

When you are a college gamer on a budget it’s not too bad. Big problem for them is now we are seeing a lot of great discounts on the MS and PS store. GameStop just can’t compete.
