Apex Legends hits 10 million players in 72 hours

It's nice to use this as a marketing term, but ultimately this is meaningless. The game is free, so obviously a lot of people are going to try it out, but the real question is, how many are going to stick with the game? Can it establish itself as a 3rd BR pillar beneath fortnite and pubg? I don't know, but even Black Ops4 failed to live up to the two juggernauts of the genre.

I'm calling it; assuming ongoing support, Apex is going to maintain a massive user base. It's free to get in, but you stay for the great game.

Maybe I need to give it a try. Apex is nice to watch on streams, but I myself never managed to really get into the br genre.

Developers paying off twitch/youtube streamers + the game is free?

All Devs do this, they pay them to play it, but they are free to express criticism of the game, the truth is this has been one of the most smooth and impressive launches I've ever seen of this type of game, it's a fantastic BR that plays like a dream and has brought some of the biggest innovations to the genre that everyone should copy. It's a fantastic game that costs absolutely nothing to enjoy and if we can actually complain about that we can complain about anything. Paying a high profile streamer to play your game just makes your money go further than running ads, 100% of the audience is your target audience.

The complete test case for the reduction of traditional media. The Buzfeed and Vice style cuts are coming to the gaming press very soon.

Marketing is a huge part of the budget. This is how the publishers claw some expenses back and keep next gen at $60.

It'll be interesting to see how long Apex stays a top Twitch mountain. Certain streamers have been reaping the benefits of this game launching. Clearly more in the wheelhouse of former CoD & PuBG players than Fortnite.

The thing about Blackout is that it could have been the third pillar. Everybody involved knows why it isn't. They didn't tune it properly after release and didn't provide regular content updates. As much as people hate on GAAS, a modern BR has to be run that way to succeed. You have to constantly tweak the balance, refine the gameplay and provide new content or regardless of how good your game is at release you'll fall behind afterwards and if you fall behind you're halfway to being dead.

Exactly the same thing will happen to Apex if Respawn/EA don't continually tweak/update it.

Update: Just went back to Blackout after a solid diet of Apex. Here’s my awakening; the similarities start and end with both being “FPS” and share a game mode. The execution and overall approach are miles apart. The games are different, and to a good degree. But quality is high in both, (apart from the texture streaming bug in BO)

It’s funny, because COD BR is not the arcade king! Apex cranks it to 11 and then some.

Both games need to co-exist, and justly should.

I really don't like the characters design, any of them. (the robot is fine). I don't know if is the artstyle in general that just don't do it for me.

It's the art style that kills me. Its like a bad mixture of Reboot and Road Runner.

Well deserved. Game is fun and runs well.
Now it all comes down to how well they support it. If they can give it the same level of support as Fortine is getting with changes to the map, big world events, new weapons and features, etc being added on a regular basis I see it sticking around

It's the first BR I'm enjoying but yeah, the character design is really bad.
Usually in these sort of games with predefined characters (be it something like Overwatch, or Mobas or a Fighting game, etc) there's at least 1-2 characters I want to try out just based on looks. Not here

I had a similar reaction. The way I addressed it is to look at it as a Fighting game. E.g Street Fighter with its Hadukens etc. and art style . Except in a BR FPS.

Yeah, for me that is the biggest negative with Apex (I am mostly happy with the rest of the game). I really like the art style of the environment and am fine with the guns but the character models are really ugly. I think this could really impact the sales potential of the cosmetics. If you are finding it difficult to get attached to the characters then you are going to give less shits about how they look and spend less money on them. Thankfully when you are running around the map you don't tend to see much detail the character models so its not so obvious. If you look at the characters in Apex side by side with say Overwatch there is a massive gulf between them in quality

They also need to really look at their pricing policy. The skins are way too expensive (Fortnite gets away with it because most people get free V-bucks from Save the World, typically lowering the cost of skins to under $10 - and also the $5 "starter packs" which come with skins is an exceptionally easy deal to justify). It seems like the store isn't really their focus, and that they are putting their hopes on the loot boxes (you get those for leveling up, not store cash), but I don't think a lot of people are going to pay real money for a 1 in 30 chance of getting a legendary item which also kind of sucks. Loot boxes only work when you are happy to unwrap the toys.

Unfortunately, my 10 year old daughter loves this game because the first free loot box she opened had a legendary skin it, so now she thinks she's lucky and that the system isn't rigged. I absolutely refuse to let her spend any money on loot boxes (on this or Overwatch), while she spends a small fortune on Fortnite stuff. So, if they want to make money, exploiting 10 year old little girls' gambling addictions probably won't get them far if their parents are paying attention. Also, exploiting 10 year old little girls' gambling addictions is like a super dick move.

It's the first BR I'm enjoying but yeah, the character design is really bad.

My problem is that, for the most part, they don't have really unique silhouettes and their colors are sort of muted browns, so if you see one halfway across the map, you can't tell who they are. You can usually tell the robot and the big guy, but that's it. In Fortnite, everybody is the same, so it doesn't matter. But how you approach a team with the guy who can track enemies is going to be different than how you attack whatever character can rain bombs everywhere.

It's a bit generic at times, but I do like Lifeline. She's the sort who you could see joining Doctors Without Borders if she were real.

Wow. How does a game get 10 million players out of the blue? Good job.
It helps that 1. Alot of big influencers got paid to promote it.
2. Most importantly. People did not care they al got paid to promote it! As they got to try it out instantly themselfs and saw it was actually really fun!

Get a nice scope on your weapon. Problem solved.

I'd add that those influencers (namely skilled streamers like Shroud and DrDisrespect) also helped tweak the gameplay, so it's kind of a win-win. EA and Respawn get their shrewd marketing and create a more satisfying game in the process.

In what way did shroud and dr influence them to tweak the gameplay? I dont believe that for a second as the first time they played the game was last week.

So well deserved, I'm loving the game, so is my younget brother, so its nice to play or watch him play and vice-versa.

The only issue I've been getting, is a crash, and has been occuring quite often, sometimes 3-4 times in a row, I hope they fix it asap.

Doc and Shroud and presumably a bunch of other people have been playtesting this for months.

If it is a CTD that happens randomly during matches and produces no errors *and* you're using usb audio you might try updating the driver for whatever that usb audio device and/or switch to onboard if you have it. Seems to be an issue with some USB audio devices.

Incredible numbers, hope it mashes fortnite.... if only to eliminate Ali-A from youtube.
But Apex feels excellent and has some excellent strategic combat. Need to find a dependable squad to play regular.

Downloaded it last night and haven't had a chance to play a game yet. Will jump in tonight. The whole class system + possibility of respawn + squads has my interest.

Don't have much experience with any BR games. Played a bit of fortnite when that first launched but didn't stick around too long.

Does EA have some campaign going on? Because I'm seeing this being shilled every where I go.

It's not shilling, it's organic. It's a well put together BR game and that's the king of the genre Hill at the moment. I don't care of BR games but it's enjoyable.

Not being shilled. First day there were sponsored streams on Twitch. Everything else has been word of mouth, the word of mouth you get when you release a great game that you don't have to wait years for them to maybe finish it. A large element is that not only is it a solid, feature-complete game, it is free to play too while not being p2w.

In the case of the streamers they have been bored to tears by PUBG/Fortnite/Blackout by now, this is a cool glass of water in the middle of a desert.

That's EA's fault. If the game was released the following Spring or Summer it would have sold well.
EA truly aren’t the brightest. The sales were cannablizied by not just cod but by their own publisher’s battlefront 2. The game even had the good will of being a competitive shooter with free dlc.

Good job Respawn. I don't have the internet to download the 31 GBs necessary to play it, so I'll stick to good ole Titanfall 2's Frontier Defense mode.

So you’re one of the 12 people

Im kidding. I LOVE Frontier Defense and wish it had launched with the game

It's the only game mode I've ever played where I haven't had a bad teammate. I've had teammates that aren't good (myself included), but everybody seems to be on the same page in regards to not goofing around and trying to protect the thingy.

Looking forward to Apex Legends when I bring my xbox to a place that has fast internet. I've seen people complaining about the lack of wall running and titans, but if the shooting and world is cool, then I'm in.

I’m really surprised at the views on twitch, I’m not familiar with non fgc streamers, but it’s kinda wild seeing the views at number one for more than a day or 2. This game is really good
