reading comprehension: "compared to microsoft". Google it, you'd be surprised how much microsft dwarfs sony.

Yeah but thts irrelevant as Sony has been in the console business way longer than Micro and has more experience in tht department. Also how big a company is when thru are multi million or billion dollar companies doesn't really matter when each division is run their own way, with their own money, budget, etc...

Not really because if the higher bandwidth is coming from having PCIe 4 or 5 the USB port & CFexpress /SDexpress card slots will also benefit from the upgrade

these new cards are basically removable SSDs

CFexpress type C even has 4 PCIe lanes so on PCIe 4 controller it could reach 8GB/s & 16GB/s on PCIe 5

USB should be around 5GB/s on PCIe 4 & 10GB/s on PCIe 5

So you are saying it's possible that the PS5 will be able to play games off of a USB HDD and still take advantage of these fast speeds if it's all connected to a PCI 4 controller on the mother board?

You can't base the cost off of retail pricing for the NVMe drive, Sony gets pricing on components waaaay cheaper than what a regular consumer does. Heck, you can get a 1TB NVMe drive on Newegg for $109.99 right now:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167462

So if Sony were buying these in bulk at a distributor's cost they would be getting a really sweet deal on them...

That drive is low-end and slow, A Samsung 970 is twice as fast and costs more than double that. Seeing how Sony is saying that their new SSD tech is much faster than current SSD tech for loading game data, it's most like custom which means it will cost more initially than using an existing part. Also profit margins on electronics, be it for the manufcturer or the retailer, are extremely thin and OEMs such as Sony don't get products that much cheaper than retail (usually 10-20% off). One of my first jobs was manager of an electronics department of a large retail store and we only made $3.96 profit on consoles. It's why retailers are threatening that they won't carry console hardware anymore if Sony, MS and Nintendo stop making physical software. All the profit a store makes on gaming is on the software, it's not worth taking up shelf-space for big console boxes to make only 4 bucks a pop off of them.

It doesn't matter what it is or isn't, but how it will be:

Absolute madlads. This is why I love PlayStation more than any other platform because it brings the passion of gaming out of everybody with it's wonderfully curated titles such as Uncharted 4, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, Knack 2, Infamous Second Son, Dreams, and so much more. PlayStation 4 out now in stores near you.

Sounds very good. But I have to wonder, why release this info now and why release it like this?

Typically we'd hear about a PS5, then hear the specs way, way, wayyyyyyyyy later. Like after it launches almost for some of the final touches. Here we seem to be getting some pretty specific info right off the bat.

Doesn't this put them at risk of tipping off the competition? From what I understand, Sony and MS were changing the specs of the PS4/Xbox One up until the last minute to outdo each other. Here, Sony seems to just be broadcasting their whole plan for others to copy or one up. What is the strategic benefit of this?

And why release this in Wired first? Has that ever happened for a console ever? Is this a response to Google? Does Sony know MS is not launching a typical console at all, so they are free to throw out details like this without fear of being copied?

I honestly cannot figure out what the tactics of this release are. And why release this NOW, when they don't even have an E3 this year? All this stuff could have been big individual announcements, but it's just buried in a magazine article instead. What the fuck.

As far as tipping off the competition, industrial espionage is a real thing. MS knows. And form mobile, which iterates the fastest, it is a minimum of 18 months from first silicon to store shelves. A holiday 2020 ps5/xb means first tape out has already happened for both. Nothing important will change.

As for the strategy, I am not sure but I am guessing that they know that now that the dev kits are being widely disseminated, leaks are inevitable so this is them getting out in front of it. But they aren't ready for an actual reveal as it is too soon and they have no cool games to show + they have one more ps4 holiday. So this is them giving some details of the ps5 in a vague general way.

I know. I just find it silly that Sony and MS are touting ray tracing and 8K, when 4K 60 really hasn't become a reality yet.

Maybe they are just making sure the systems support it in some form. Even if they have some slighter version of RT....them having it at all helps everyone, it means next gen when its all said and done, 100 plus million systems are sold with that tech that only helps its ten fold. For all we know, PS5 and XBX support 1080p, 4K and 8K based on how DEMANDING a title happens to be. Nothing wrong with that if they are seeking to make better for the future. 4K 60fps btw is more so a developer thing as Sony and MS can't just force every developer to use dated assets or old engines or anything like that to hit those numbers. So 4K 60 is a reality.....for the few developers that care enough to alter their games to hit that. If ALL developers wanted that, they don't need to really do much, just used dated engines, lessor assets etc.

Put it this way, The Last Of Us 1 on PS4 runs native 4K, I don't think Naughty Dog want to lower the quality of The Last Of Us 2 to a PS3 game to hit those numbers. They will do what they can, they won't alter every thing just to hit that. So its just up to the developer on that one.

To be fair, it wouldn't surprise me if when a MS rep visits a third party game studio they just ask what's in the PS5 dev kit and a dev will tell them and vice versa.
They might sell you patches. I mean I wouldn't mind paying 5 bucks a pop for some 60fps patches for PS4 games.

So in the end next generation both Sony and Microsoft will release machines that will push thier limits to the extremes and 95 percent of the gaming public wont care or be able to even tell the difference between them graphically and the 5 percent of us here will compare the 2 as if our preferred console is filet mignon and the other is alpo.

LOL! Nah. The PS5 is reading like a console that's a true gen leap. Similar to the PS3 -> PS4.

People, and you, have been touting the same exact thing since 720p. And FullHD. And 2K. And 4K.

But unless you either sit up super close to your TV or have a massive screen you are not going to benefit from 8K, most consumers probably sit around the 10-12ft range, so even 4K is almost borderline at that point...

Agree, but I looked at the fact that they compared it to a PS4 Pro which has a Hitachi model: HTS541010A9E680 hard drive inside, and the sequential read speed on that drive is around 100.4MB/s, which on the demo it loaded that scene 18.75x faster than the PS4 Pro, so you take 100.4MB x 18.75 = 1,882.5MB/s, which puts it right in line with that NVMe drive I listed. Now I know the current dev kits probably aren't running at full speed, so I would imagine the final hardware being even faster. I don't know if you ever looked at the BOM when the PS3 and PS4 came out, but I was pretty floored how cheap they got certain components for their systems, I mean look at what was in the PS4 at launch and even at that $399 price they weren't losing money day 1. If they sell the PS5 at $499 and take a small hit on the cost and sell at negative margins at launch I can definitely see them pulling off an amazing system!

It was same bs tht was being touted during Xbox one initial release and ps4 and ppl trying to downplay the resolution difference in games. Trust me BF at 900 p on Xbox one was a big difference from BF on PS4 at 1080p.

I agree with this. Like this gen, I belive the only major differential will be what exclusives each company can push out. Sony already has a proven track record.

Don't forget VR too. Every PS4 VR game and the PSVR headset, Moves, and camera will be backwards compatible with the PS5. I assume by Fall 2020, PSVR will cost $99. Imagine only needing to spend $99 on a VR headset combo to go with your PS5.

And I imagine the PS5 will allow those games to look super clean too.

I consider myself a pretty hard core gamer and stopped at a Frys and looked at an 8K TV.

It was 75" and sitting next to a 77" 4K OLED and honestly once me and my family backed up 3 or 4 feet we couldnt really see a difference.

My adult son who is 30 who is also a hard core gamer said he couldn't see any difference either.

When I hear 8K support anyhow I more think of watching 8K videos not so much game related.

MS game devs will have to support low end PCs and their cheap next gen console, so the only company making games from the ground up and exclusively for cutting edge ss storage will be sony. We’ve never had that before. Shame they don't make giant open world games.
This is actually a really interesting point. If Microsofts strategy is to get their games on as many platforms as possible, there is no way they can design games to fundamentally utilize SSD speeds as part of the game engine/design. Sure they will at least have fast loading on the Xbox console version that has SSD, but we dont even know what game possibilities even exist yet when you are designing specifically to use that crazy bandwidth... Who knows what kind of design and tech gulf between the two that will present.

Really excited to see what the PS5's Uncharted 4 E3 demo moment will be.

Agreed. I think Sony and MS actually are ok and expecting each other to know. They want to gauge what developers want the most and each other doing it is very important to adding a feature. ie if Sony states they want some crazy SSD, MS might look at that and ask how developer really feel and then add it to be on the same page. So I'm 100% ok with this and this is likely what they've been doing for generations.

I suppose it's possible but then it would pretty much require SSDs if you wanted to upgrade game storage and you won't get that much space for your buck. I mean right now on my PS4 I have a 2TB internal drive and a 4TB external drive and all that space is probably up to 75% full and I own lots of games I haven't even installed yet, granted it's the end of the gen though. But think about backwards compatibility for a second, I already need a shitload of space for all my PS4 games if I want to install them on PS5, let alone install PS5 games. Hopefully they'll at least let you install PS4 games on a mechanical drive.

I don't doubt for a moment that you could tell the difference between those, I could too and going to 4K you are going to probably see a big improvement as well, but I really think anything over 4K you start entering into the land of diminishing returns...unless you have a massive TV and the vision of a bald eagle...

Exactly my point, but if that screen was 150" then you would totally notice a difference, but most people don't have a screen that size. I think it is great they are thinking on 8K future-proofing, but it will be for video only, I really don't see anyone doing any 8K games, it's already taxing on the current hardware to pull off high fidelity native 4K at good framerates

The only thing I don't like is the inclusion of ray tracing.... Like... we can't even do proper 4k releases yet and they want to hop on ray tracing? Don't get me wrong, I love my 2080 but I never use ray tracing on this thing.

Think about it this way. There maybe a game that comes out that uses Raytracing, not open world, and runs at a solid 30 fps at 1440 resolution. It wouldn't surprise me if that same game is the best looking game of the year because of those decisions.

Everything doesn't have to be 4K.

That's kind of my dilemma too, but I know going forward having a faster drive like that is going to be necessary, otherwise the load times are going to be ridiculous and the games are going to become crippled, I hope Microsoft is planning on doing a NVMe as well, I really think that is why the NVMe pricing dropped so hard, because both Sony and Microsoft put in their orders to the components which caused the price to drop which is an awesome thing because it also benefits PC gamers/users as well. I have a Samsung 950 Pro in my current PC and it only does 2500MB/s (fastest I could get at the time) and even at that speed playing games and just doing general computer stuff is simply amazing at those speeds and after having it I could never imagine going back to a mechanical or regular SSD. Just give it time too, chips are getting more dense and prices continue to drop so eventually you are going to see waaay larger drives on the NVMe front than you could with a 2.5" mechanical drive.

The 8K set was more than likely not even running an 8K single or video, just upscaling a 1080p or 4K that everything else was.

Just keep that in mind.

The guy at Frys said it was running native 8k video but wouldnt say how.

Once we got close it was sharper then the 4k sitting beside it.

It was running its own video compared to all the other displays and it was all nature stuff.

But when it was zoomed in on a slow motion video of a hummingbird the details in the feathers were amazing when I was within about a foot away from the screen.

Yes, but this early, they are not supposed to share it with anyone outside the select people in the know there. Let alone even show them off, especially to some other company rep.

Been down that road just before the Vita rumors (PSP2) at the time were buzzing. We knew it existed, but were never allowed to see it, or knew anything about it spec wise.

Still funny, but I got completely what you mean.

Semi OT, but I got Cyberpunk 2077 pre ordered from Amazon when they still had the 20% off thing when I heard the rumor of them getting rid of it lol

Its worked for DMC5, RE2 remake and a few other titles. Too bad Spiderman, Days Gone and other games I wanted didn't have a pre-order option at the time. So Cyberpunk....when ever it comes, I'm getting that 20% discount and Amazon GONE PAY WHAT THEY OWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still no native 8k content for the market I guess. Most of the job are made by 8k upscaler and TV processor. Happens in the same way when 4k was. Fastshop saying 'hey this is 4k content', but its not after all. Only our old buddy PR.

I totally hear you on that. I do not game 4k. I play 1440p but it seems that the 2080 is just barely enough for that(in my eyes obviously cause some people ludicrously suggest a 1070 which I upgraded from is good for 1440p).

I wonder if this thing can hit the 14 TF range

My guess is going to be in the 14.2 to 14.7 TF range, but only time will tell!

People, and you, have been touting the same exact thing since 720p. And FullHD. And 2K. And 4K.

Okay... have it your way... when did I say that? (I'll wait your response)

There will be no noticeable difference for 8k for sub 100 inch screens, I doubt most people will even notice even at 120 inches, marginal at best. Its a waste of processing especially considering processing is entering the end of Moore's Law. There could be some use for VR at 8k, but even that is probably the end of the road there. Most people are not going to notice because they don't game or watch TV on 200 inch screens, I'm the exception to this as I game on front projector - usually 100-120 inch screen. Best to use processing for framerate, and possibly raytracing, etc. instead of 8k, generally speaking. People are going to be shocked over the next 15-20 years when graphics barely move up..... baby steps from now on... on the hardware processing side and probably on the ability for developers to spend more money to even fill it up.

Generally speaking, 8k is a waste other than maybe (I'll hedge a little here) VR for the foreseeable future, if there is a big change in processor design (Moore's Law) than 8k is it could make more sense, until than mostly a waste of cycles.

So you are saying it's possible that the PS5 will be able to play games off of a USB HDD and still take advantage of these fast speeds if it's all connected to a PCI 4 controller on the mother board?

If the higher bandwidth is coming from using PCIe 4 & not from stacking ReRAM directly on the SoC you will be able to get that same bandwidth through the PCIe connections if they allow it.

even on PCIe 3 CFexpress type C cards will reach 4GB/s because it's basically a 4 lane SSD in a card , SDexpress & CFexpress type A are 1 lane PCIe & CFexpress type B & USB C is 2 lanes.

But all of that is out of the window if PS5 storage is using 8 or 16 lanes connected directly to the SoC to reach bandwidths that can't be reached without having 8 to 16 lanes. but even then they could use dual NVMe to get 8 lanes.

They might sell you patches. I mean I wouldn't mind paying 5 bucks a pop for some 60fps patches for PS4 games.

Is there anything that could support that? Any sign to that at all?...because to me, selling patches sounds very very unlikely, not to mention not normal and kinda stupid.

If that turns out to be the case then my interest in the PS5 has deflated.

Yeah right lol why would PS3 games be the deciding factor in your interest in a console 2 generations away? The best of the PS3 games have been ported to PS4 or can be played through PS Now.

I loved the PS3 but to say that PS3 BC deflated your interest in the PS5 is plan silly like handicapping your own mind . it don't make any logical sense no matter how much you love a PS3 game.

What PS3 games do you love so much that you don't want a PS5 if it can't play it?

This post might piss you off but I really want to know what PS3 game is making you lock your brain & say I don't care about anything else if PS5 can't play these old games?

Very interesting......now I'm stuck behind two things.

1. I kinda want Sony to use the SSD that's connected directly to the SoC to reach bandwidth levels never seen before (even on $2,500 PCs) just to see 1st party and some 3rd party devs push the console. Because this is the advantage of a console (see PS3).

2. If option 1 happens that means we can't upgrade the hard drive. Or if the HDD fails, you'll have to get a whole new PS5 :( And that would suck. So if it's using PCIe 4, the SSD could still be upgradable with so many different options to do that.

I mean if they have to get staff to work on the game code of old games to insert resolution and framerate options and perhaps more I could see them charging for it. Otherwise why would they bother? It's like a remaster except instead of paying 40 bucks for it, you would pay like 5 bucks provided you already own the game, sounds good to me. They probably won't use the word "patch" though, they'll use the word "upgrade" instead.

On paper it makes sense; adding to a game costs money therefore customers should pay for it. Hard work deserves fair pay, and whatnot. But in reality people would never accept the idea of paying for a patch. The very idea of a patch in the gamer's psyche is that they're always free.

The argument would be that all patches require more work from the devs but they're free, so why would these ones be any different?

They probably won't use the word "patch" though, they'll use the word "upgrade" instead.
I reckon people would see through that.

Doesnt sound good at all. Patches are supposed to add functions, fix bugs, increase perfomance and whatnots. If patches becoming paying stuff with the premise of "more work", there will be nothing to stop them from doing half-ass work games and selling patches with the argument of "its not required".

Also your suggestion sounds more and more like a rip-off then anything. Calling patches an "upgrade"(the same-but-different gif fits here well)? I can't agree more with the scandal just waiting to happen line of thinking, on the same scale as Battlefront.

"Next gen" doesn't really mean much going forward, just like PS Pro 4 and Xbox One X exist with higher specs... they are higher spec machines which will be able to play backwards out of the box. Not sure what the rest of your post is, its like you are having a discussion with yourself, I never implied or said anything you put at the end there.

Developers will continue to target PS4 as the primary target point for many years to come and it has zero bearing on what Microsoft does or doesn't do as far as new hardware.

Sorry mate but your argument doesn't make sense and it is clear you don't know anything about hardware.
XboxOneX or PS4Pro are not "next gen" or even half next gen. They are old hardware with just more juice.
And both of them are effectively limited by same minimums both PS4 and Xbox1 are.

Developers targeting old hardware outside of some yearly sports games never happened in history.
Everyone in idustry wants to move on from crappy PS4 and Xbox1 hardware and PS4Pro and Xbox1X are not huge improvements as they don't fix cpu problem.

Developers already have a stronger console they can target Xbox One X, had basically no visual impact on sales that I can see.

Because it is not next gen console.

Math must be hard for you. Ps4 Pro will be 3 years this year compared to 2 years on the xbox one x so no, not the same.

So another 3 years till PS5 no ? You do realize you make dumb argument ?
XboxPro has nothing to do with release of next gen console.
XboxPro/PS4Pro are just options for standard PS4/Xbox not next gen consoles.
