GamesIndustry - UK Charts: Days Gone defeats Mortal Kombat 11 to claim No.1

I wasn’t going to bother with this, not because of reviews written by pillocks but because I’m a bit zombied out atm. Quite a lot of peeps seem to be enjoying it though so I might actually give it a go. After it drops in price a bit.

Just because something sells well does not make your critical opinion of it invalid.

I agree. Keeping Up with the Kardashians was highly rated (viewership), although everyone knows its junk TV. So, sales/ratings doesn't mean its "good" as a piece of media necessarily. I would say that even the people that watch the Kardashians think its junk. All I know is Days Gone is a good game by my tastes, there are a few things technical issues that could be improved, as far as game play and what they have built - they owe nobody an apology.

I'm enjoying this game more than Horizon and Red Dead Redemption 2, so how does one score that? (and I thought those games were good)

Is this a short term trend? Or are we due for some articles about how sexist gamers are since those who know better couldn't sway the masses to ensure cleavage lacking loot box Kombat outsells that damn misogynistic biker game?

US sales are going to be really good as well. It's even sold out where I live, AAA games are almost never sold out where I live.

Funny how MK dropped to 50 bucks a few days later. On amazon they don't even let you see the price until you add it to your cart :messenger_tears_of_joy:

"Tired of zombie themes. So boring and overdone."

(hopefully not to far from the topic)

That is what confuses me the most, "generic", "overused", etc. I mean other than robot dinosaurs, exactly what type of theme hasn't been overused? If its worth exploring, most probably many games came out before it doing nearly the same thing. I love space marine games, some of them have good designs, some of them not so much. There is a market for overused themes (see Madden), the choice is on the developer to make it their own and to make it good.

Best zombie game since Left 4 Dead for me, and I like it better than The Last of Us. What is funny is nobody says "overused" when the 15th billionth Mario game comes out.

Congrats but the Mortal Kombat split on ps vs xbox is crazy

like yo..72% on PS4? Daym...

Xbox people lost interest with MK or what?

Maybe because there are probably much more ps4 owners than xbox outside of US, while UK is "strong" market for xbox, could be still this.

I literally dont know anyone whom owns xbox here at Finland. Stores sell 70-75% ps4 games and then there are small section for xbox/switch

I like days of gone, would give it 9/10

And why's that? Many customers don't care about the review scores no matter if they're low or high. Also the reviewer shouldn't be afraid to give the game a low score (if it's justified by the review) because of it potentially hurting its sales.
I recommend watching Dunkey's video on game critics. Even though it's close to being 2 years old, the problems of game reviews he mentions still applies today.

So critics of Justin Beiber are wrong and not strong enough "influencers"

Are you illiterate or just stupid? This doesn't make any sense, stop speaking to me out of your ass and putting words in my mouth. Where did I say the critics were wrong? In fact I said it doesn't speak to the invalidity of their opinion. Where in that statement did your tiny brain read "critics were wrong." Can you point it out to me?

Perhaps you've been drinking and you're not really this dumb, but sadly I suspect this is you at your best.

You know what, I'm gonna do you a favor, I will make my statement again. Perhaps a second reading will bring you more clarity. Read slower this time, as not to hurt yourself.

It doesn't speak to the invalidity of your opinion if you give something a poor critique and don't recommend it, yet everyone buys it anyway, it speaks to the paucity of your influence.

True, people overestimate the strength of the xbox in europe. I wouldn't be surprised if the sales ratio on continental europe would be even further in favor of the ps4.

We have data already, just not the data you like.

That MK11 was the most successful launch in the franchise history? That according to benji sales twitter who observed the strong sales of Days Gone before this piece broke that MK11 physical skus combined are "much higher" than Days Gone? Why wouldnt I like that data? Lol

It will sell ok for the first couple of weeks because it’s had massive advertising and is a lowest common denominator game which any old bloke will buy for the sake of it as there’s nothing else out at the moment. Game looks terrible, simply a mix of Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us with a rip-off of that biker from the walking dead as the lead. simply a stop gap game to get something on the shelves as TLoU2 is taking way longer than Sony Expected.

Isn't it literally "console split"? Aren't there twice as many PS4 owners, as XBO owners?
In UK? No... no where close to 2:1... more like 1.5:1.

Last data had PS4 over 6 million and XB1 close to 5 million... the difference is around 1.5 million.

Expecting Days Gone to pass Sekiro (PS4 version) in week #2 as far as total sales for 2019, probably another week to pass Resident Evil 2 (PS4 version) based on Amazon charting. Long way to go to catch-up to Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-man and Kingdom Hearts (PS4). Should be 2m-ish units in a month and 4-7m within a year.

My favorite game this cycle right after Bloodborne, and I'm not even close to being done.

I want to hear the mental gymnastics when Last of Us 2 releases, why the zombies aren't tiring and overdone.

Something not zombies something something shroomies something brave new direction for the genre something something Citizen Kane something deep emotional impact something 110 out of 100! Something something GOAT!

Something.

I was judging by this:

Qcxm3z6.png
But that is WW estimates (and wrong because Sony released data that deny most PS data in that chart... PS2 for example shipped a bit more than 155m units)... not UK.

The ratio posted in the news is UK only.

Mckmaster uses MasterCard to buy Slave drives
  1. DAYS GONE (SONY) / RESIDENT EVIL 2 (CAPCOM) ~ 70k
  2. KINGDOM HEARTS III (SQUARE ENIX EUROPE) ~ 66k
  3. TOM CLANCY'S THE DIVISION 2 (UBISOFT) ~ 55k
  4. ANTHEM (ELECTRONIC ARTS) ~ 45k
  5. SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE (ACTIVISION BLIZZARD) ~ 30k
  6. NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. U DELUXE (NINTENDO)
  7. FAR CRY NEW DAWN (UBISOFT)
  8. DEVIL MAY CRY 5 (CAPCOM) ~ 21k
  9. METRO EXODUS (DEEP SILVER)
  10. YOSHI'S CRAFTED WORLD (NINTENDO)
  11. Crackdown 3 (MICROSOFT) ~4k

Days Gone, Resident Evil 2 Remake, Kingdom Hearts III, The Division 2, Anthem, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, Devil May Cry 5 & Crackdown 3 : They all launched on a friday.

With 70K Days Gone is the biggest launch of the year in the United Kingdom with RE2 Remake (physical only).

I think with the digital Days Gone should not be far from the 90~100K minimum

This is INSANE!!! WOW!

Well, I did my part, but that was a digital purchase. I rather suspect that digital sales were strong on this one...

That only applied to Halo though, a digital tour de force that..

I remember that quote from one of the days gone threads...... Surely there's no game pass to save this game, what ever will they do.....?

That was me! :messenger_tears_of_joy:
I saw the review scores and felt like a Sony gamepass could get people to at least try the game. I was worried the 75% score would stop people from even trying it out.

Dang MK11. A $10 price drop in week one? And still not selling out in stores. Weird.

Isn't it literally "console split"? Aren't there twice as many PS4 owners, as XBO owners?

But Days Gone came out the same week as MK11. No way should that many more people have bought MK11 on the PS4, than the Xbox One.

Sales splits like this are not a new phenomenon in the UK, Xboxs second strongest market. Most western third party games see splits from 60-70 percent while Japanese games are 85 percent plus. And the gap keeps growing wider. Fighting games have performed better on playstation even back in the ps3 days, but for MK to sell this well the same week as a big PS4 exclusive, well what you can say?

I dont think people realize how underwater Microsoft is outside of the US. Thats why these "xbox ready to dominate next gen" and "ready for a comeback" articles we see all the time are pure fantasy. The only way that happens is if sony let Microsoft comeback. MS has all the money in the world true, but xbox is a business not a charity, at some point it cant keep bleeding money and some point they cant keep burning billions of dollars. Xbox will do better next gen of course, it couldnt do worse than it is now.

Just checked Amazon and its true, price already down 50. Also saw a gamspot article from last week listing a slew of retailers who had dropped the price in week 1. Here's something else I found interesting. Multiple outlets, as of last week, required you to add it to the cart to see the price. I wonder why that is. I know that's a tactic sometimes used to suggest the price will be really good, but for a product that launched only days ago that seems odd to me. Do you think there is a contractual clause not to advertise reduced prices before a certain date, or just retailer gimmicks to drive up interest?

As for why it dropped 10 in a week, that seems rather obvious. They went overboard on micro transactions from what I have read, and they also changed something that long time fans were used to, and then gave a stupid explanation as to why. Basically, they created a perfect storm for themselves. Shocking really that they did not learn from Dice's mistake and just say they chose a new art direction, and hope fans enjoy it. They still would have gotten micro transaction backlash, but would have most likely avoided the second controversy that way.

It's so laughable when I hear reasonable podcasters like Jeff Cannata and Greg Miller talk about Xbox Next Gen as almost built in dominaince due to Game Pass and Project Xcloud. And it's funny because Game Pass is here today and look what it's doing for the Xbox brand in Europe and Project Xcloud may not even release in most European countries at launch.

No need to look at Amazon. Look at this pic that's on this page. Look at the price for MK11 in Walmart last week. Days Gone is $59.99, while MK11 is $49.99 in this picture lol.

I too checked amazon but for days gone placements instead. Days Gone is number between 1-3 in the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. Number 12 in the US but the top selling ps4 game. I know amazon isnt the end all be all of sale estimates but it is interesting none the less.

People reporting on reddit that 1.06 might cause some freezing issues, you maybe hold off on the update.

Update: Crap, wrong thread, sorry about that.

Pretty much most top multi's in the UK have such splits.....Actually , there are quite a few games which are much higher ratios in favor of PS4.....You should check out....Dragon Ballz, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Ace Combat, kindom Hearts, Monster Hunter and so many more.......

Maybe Gamepass is killing retail sales.
How is that possible......Phil said gamepass was actually boosting retail sales and not killing it.....He never gave figures though, but I trust Phil........

This is INSANE!!! WOW!

Days gone is an excellent game.......What I've noticed is that PS owners don't just talk about games that looks good to them, they support the games they know they will enjoy......So whatever reviewers say, they test for themselves......I know what games I like more than reviewers, some of these guys don't even finish the games or know how to put a PS4 on......So reviews have never detracted me from a game that always looked like my Jive and it's looking like this rings true with most PS gamers here.......If you follow, I was stoked for this game from day 1.........In truth, I'd really not want a service like gamepass to deter anyone from giving these devs the $60 they so fairly deserve.....

I posted in the OT that estimates in Japan are around 80k units, which would put it higher than God of War but less than Horizon. I turned on Playstation Live the other day and I swear about 90% of the people playing were Japanese. Apparently, Japanese people like American white guys more than American white women. :messenger_tears_of_joy: The game actually appears to be selling better outside the United States.

I bet those reviewers who gave it less than a 7 must feel really stupid now. The game will sell good lifetime and I’m positive there will be a sequel.
Huh? What is this statement even trying to say?

Reviews are opinions pieces. The popularity of something has no correlation with its quality - plenty of good things sell poorly, and plenty of bad things sell well. Why would this affect any reviewers opinion on a product?

Consumers lost interest in the Xbox One.

Because it has nothing to do with an opinion, and more to do with either an agenda or not knowing what the fuck they are talking about. When someone says slo mo shooting on a bike doesn't make sense they don't even know enough about modern game mechanics to really have a discussion with or to even listen to their opinion. (Mean while, the game designer over at Take Two is laughing their damn asses off)
