I bought my fiancee a Nintendo Switch for Christmas 2017. She owns three games for it. Mario Kart, which the console came with. Zelda Breath of the Wild and Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu. She hasn't got any other games and when we go looking for a game, we never seem to find one we really want to play. This is my issue with Nintendo products really, I don't want ports of last gen games that I've already played but there isn't enough in it's future to really make me want to have it. The lack of power means that developers won't really want to port many of their current titles unless they know there is profit to be made and it's worthwhile. Not to say that it doesn't happen because Mortal Kombat 11 got a port. But Resident Evil 2 didn't and Capcom normally perform well on Nintendo platforms. Monster Hunter World hasn't received a Switch port and yet Capcom put all their Monster Hunter egg's in Nintendo's basket after they ditched PSP, so it's a little odd to see.
I don't think a more powerful Switch is necessarily the answer. We just aren't seeing enough unique games to really make it worthwhile. But in today's market, I can't see titles from existing franchises made for a single platform being worthwhile. Like with the Wii, Nintendo had the Resident Evil Chronicles titles, Dead Space Extraction, House of the Dead Overkill, Silent Hill Shattered Memories etc. All these games ended up being ported to other consoles, even in 2010 SH:SM got a PSP and PS2 port. I just think Nintendo need to re-capture that third party support. Get Capcom making Resident Evil and Devil May Cry games for it that are unique and take advantage of the system, get Namco on it, Square etc. Don't just be the same game with a reasonable visual trade off.
If they do that, we'll buy more games and we'll all be happier. But even the last time I went to GAME, there's two gondola's full of Switch games and there's nothing we want to buy or don't already have in better quality. Crash Bandicoot? Mmm, nah, got it on PS4, don't need it again. Dragon's Dogma? Better on PS4. Skyrim? Sheesh, got it on three other platforms already... I'm surprised there isn't a Fallout game on Switch yet, that supposed Fallout 3 remaster for Switch would have been exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. If they're going to just port older titles to the Switch to fill out the catalogue and test the waters, at least make sure they're the definitive version.
