Ex PlayStation America Boss Says Sony Is Well Positioned for Next-Gen but Will Face Exponentially Greater Competition

Sony officially made the first step towards the next-generation of consoles a few weeks ago when it unveiled a few key specifications of the upcoming PlayStation 5 (we’re pretty much sure it will be called that even though Sony didn’t actually reference it with this name yet). We know it will feature an eight-core 7nm CPU based on AMD’s Zen2 architecture, a custom GPU based on AMD’s Navi architecture with hardware support for raytracing, a dedicated unit for 3D audio and a custom SSD that’s supposed to make loading screens relics of the past.

We expect Microsoft to make its own big announcement during the E3 Media Briefing (Sunday, June 9th, 1 PM Pacific Time), perhaps going into even greater detail of what its next-generation Xbox will be able to do. Regardless, even though these devices won’t launch this year, the race is on.

It is therefore interesting to read the opinion of Jack Tretton, who’s been an executive at Sony for almost thirty years, the last eight of which he spent as the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). In an interview posted yesterday by GamesBeat, he said Sony as the market leader is obviously well positioned but he also expects them to face exponentially greater competition than the last time.

I think they’re very well-positioned. The leader of the prior generation is always in a good position going into the new generation. From what I’ve read about the specs of PlayStation 5, it sounds impressive. Their business model obviously worked well for them the last time around, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to deviate from that. They’ll be well-positioned. But I do think they’ll face exponentially more competition than they did the last time around.
Microsoft should give them a better run for their money, and Stadia is a new wrinkle in the market that didn’t exist in 2013. Nintendo is more relevant this time around. It’s going to be a much more competitive market. There are new players. But they’ve learned some valuable lessons in this generation. It should be great for everyone in the business, whether you’re a developer or a gamer. It’s going to keep everyone on their toes.

You talking about Shawn Layden? Shawn is fine for me honestly, at first I didn't like him but he grew on me later. I also miss Andrew House, he was awesome.

I told you who I don't miss Phil Harrison. Fuck that guy.
I was talking about Jim Ryan.

I agree. But the future is not now or possibly not even the next 10 years as our infrastructure isn’t ready for it on a global scale.

I get what you mean, but I think 10 years is stretching it a bit. I'd say 5 at the most. Can't wait for Project xCloud to kick off too see what and how it will actually being going down. While you definitely have to consider your connection speeds, ISPs, bandwidth limits and so on it will be interesting too see how it will all start off and progress from there.

Actually I would say they should both 69 each other. I would watch that.

Makes sense, it’s a lot more competitive market, Nintendo no longer has to worry about the WiiU and the Switch is a homerun, Microsoft seems to have learned its lesson from Xbox One Launch and has been investing, plus Google enters the fray. Should be interesting times.

We've never had a console generation where the Big Three were firing on all cylinders. One of them was going through a fuck-up. Be it PS3, Gamecube/wiiU, Saturn, Xbone.

Should be good to see three companies going hell for leather.

He's not wrong. Sony doesn't have the luxury of capitalizing on a floundering Nintendo and Microsoft this time, so they do need to be careful not to get cocky. I think they can pull it off, but I like to keep my options open, so we'll see what happens.
As long as all 3 find success next gen, then that should be all that matters for gamers. We have Google Amazon, and god knows who else trying to take over gaming, we should stick together for the coming war. Anyone bothered about who 'wins' is a fanboy.

This, wanting the big 3 to fail because the streaming options from new companies are the new hotness isn't really a solution that helps anybody. I feel its important to wish all companies succeed so that gaming itself can succeed.

All 3 had great 6th gen machines GameCube being the best to me despite its sales

True, true. GC Xbox and Ps2 were sweet, I suppose you could throw DC in there as well? Microsoft were still new though, Nintendo were...well who knows and Sony was just coasting.

To see all three come into a generation on a high note is going to be interesting to be a part of.

He probably still has a lot friends at Sony, and you know they probably hang out and talk about things.

Man i loved me some Gamecube, but better than PS2?, you could even argue the orig Xbox was better game wise.
GameCube had it all, best ergonomic controller, sturdiest hardware, no disc read errors, best games. Ps2 had the most good games in quantity terms I would say

Xbox was the weakest game wise but had quite a few gems and overall better multiplat support than cube

I loved them all

Microsoft is the only competition. Nintendo is doing well but in their own bubble as usual. Look at the current gen third party for example MK11 on the Switch. Night and day difference. That will be even more apparent once next gen PS and Xbox arrive. Switch is selling well but is also a 2 year old console.

There is absolutely nothing for a user to go to Switch when the next gen rolls out. Its a successful Nintendo console but has no place or chance with the two titans about to arrive. The big hits are already out....zelda, mario, smash bros, yoshi...its gonna be a nice and cheap system to get on the side but i see no obvious option for it to take out a piece of the sales cake for MS and SONY or pose any threat.

Best games PS2 wins hands down
The GC was the best HW of the gen, the best designed console that gen by far, its only "flaw" was the disc with small capacity compared to DVDs. Kinda wish GC HW was in the PS2

I agree its not a direct competitor but its still competing for your gaming time.

How many gamers with psplus are going to switch to xbox and a new ecosystem? I really cannot see Microsoft catching sony up unless they get exclusives like grand theft auto, which won’t happen.

Its sonys to lose imo and if they get arrogant it could happen, but I think the ps3 taught them a lesson. I don’t believe the ps5 will be sold as a premium console at £500, that would be the end, unless Microsoft follow a similar strategy. Maybe a launch standard and pro model is the way to go to satisfy the hardcore?

how many 360 users with xboxlive accounts switched to ps4 this gen?
It can happen if they get to comfortable and fuck with something that shouldn't had been fucked with

Its definitely going to be an interesting competition because this time both Sony And MS had their "dud" moment (PS3/Xbox1). You'd have to be an idiot to make the same mistake again.

Me personally I'll be going with Sony as usual. As long as they keep providing quality titles as this gen.

SonGoku SonGoku technically Xbox was most powerful but it couldn't reach its full potential due to lack of memory bandwidth and slow front side bus.

GameCube had the better looking exclusives overall except Xbox had better image quality, due to GameCube only having 2mb for its framebuffer ; games have a slightly dithered look.

Games wise we can sit here and argue all day but the superior RE4, thousand year door, f zero gx (best racing game ever), metroid prime and echoes, twilight princess, luigis mansion - those were just a few I could mention and ill never get tired of playing them

Chozofication_ Chozofication_ I agree Xbox was the most powerful but it was badly designed relied on brute force too much and had bottlenecks that kept it from reaching it potential
The GC on the other hand was an elegantly designed machine that gave Xbox a run for its money all the while costing much less, consuming less power and being tiny without any slim revision.

I agree those games you listed are gems but ps2 had equally good gems and more quantinity in other words quality and quantity.

I definitely give ps2 the win in quantity but personally I even like xboxs library better. Great Sega games, ninja gaiden voodoo Vince crimson skies I loved its exclusives.

Ps2 has a lot of critical darlings I suppose but personally I don't rank them too high. Except Dmc3 and klonoa 2.

God of war, okami, jak, sly, GTA, mgs all meh. I liked ico and shadow but they don't actually play wel. (Shadow on ps4 does tho). The multis that cube didn't get, you could just get on Xbox.

I guess I don't like ps2 that much after all xD but still it had tons to play overall.

He's right. The turn around from the beginning of last gen to the end of this one is incredible. Remember when "PS3 haz no gamez" was the number 1 console meme?"

And now once again they're on the cusp of losing it all again. Wtf happened to the "To Michael" campaign, Sony? I'm so angry I can't see straight.

The inclusion of 3d sound makes me happy I purchased the Platinum PS4 Headphone 7.1/3d audio headphones. Also I read that while you compute ray tracing you can take that data and make more realistic sound echos. So ray tracing is also gonna improve our audio in games which is pretty cool.

What was sonys competition doing at the beginning of this gen? Nintendo pushing a console/tablet hybrid nobody wanted and microsoft shooting its own foot with the whole DRM debacle. I'd say less competition then this gen is almost impossible. Of course Nintendo and Microsoft won't make the same mistakes twice and of course Google's Stadia will make a splash.
