Jason Reitman "My Version Of ‘Ghostbusters’ Will “Hand The Movie Back To The Fans”

“This is going to be a love letter to ‘Ghostbusters,’ said Reitman. “I love this franchise. I grew up watching it. I consider myself the first ‘Ghostbusters’ fan. I was like seven years old when that movie came out and I love it. I want to make a movie for my fellow ‘Ghostbusters’ fans.”

He continued by discussing the amount of work that went into creating the short teaser that was released earlier this year. He said, “We went back to the work files for the sound of the proton pack. And we went back to the stems of Elmer Berstein’s score. Just for where it says, in the teaser, ‘Sumer 2020,’ we went back and found the original physical vinyl letters they used to create the ‘Ghostbusters’ poster in 1984. Rescanned them and then our titles guys reprinted them. We filmed the titles. Not like in a computer. We shot physical titles with a light and smoke effect because that’s how they would have done it back in the day.”

“We are, in every way, trying to go back to the original technique and hand the movie back to the fans,’ the director concluded.

I'm still concerned about the cast supposedly being young kids but so far everything else is sounding great.

I think you need a replacement but the movie should tell this story. Like being trained or taught by the old guys for example.

This is their last shot. I imagine they'll center the story around the old Ghostbusters passing the reigns to a new generation, but we'll see. Don't forget that Ghostbusters used to have a ton of merchandising including TV shows (strangely enough) and so if they can successfully pass it to a new cast we might see more from this IP.

Pretty bold decision make a franchise sequel that tries to evoke elements of the most beloved entries in the series, and to write it with the fans who love the existing characters and plot elements in mind.

That is so fucking awesome, and shows a real love for the original work.

I wonder if this is going to be based on Ghostbusters: Alive Again that Ivan Reitman talked about in 2013.

Or the half dozen other Ghostbusters 3 scripts that have floated around for the past decade.

haha of course media is already angry especially blue verified twitter. They have become an angry hate mob just like the ones they accused of back in 2016

God, all they whine about is how this is done to appeal to white people. It's not that 2016 was shockingly unfunny or anything and that is why "the fans" hate it.

I honestly hope the new team is made decently diverse just to spite them, but also because it should not make a difference in the writing. Normal people aren't "straight" or "gay" or "black" or "white" - they are just people. The original thrived on that, like most good media does, and 2016 based itself on the opposite. There could be a great statement made by this movie towards that.

Apparently feminists are angry about this. Women have the right to have their "girl power" version. The "female empowerment" edition, or whatever. But a more faithful version for the old fans? Oh, no, you can't have that, it's forbidden.

They are probably salty because everything that panders to them turns out shit.

I hope they stay angry. Fucking cry babies. Quality speaks for itself.

Eh it’s a simple matter of economics. GB 2016 wasn’t really a critical or financial hit.

Far better movies never saw sequels (looking at you, Dredd, such a shame)

Yeah, he said this on the Bill Burr podcast. I was listening to it today.

My call from another thread of Bill Burr being in this movie is still alive.

Fun facts:
- Jason Reitman & Bill Burr are friends
- Bill Burr just featured in Reitman’s movie The Frontrunner
- Jason Reitman said the OP’s quote on the Bill Burr podcast
- Bill Burr is perfect for a Ghostbusters movie

The dream is still alive.

I doubt it's all feminists. I wouldn't paint them all with the same brush.
Every group has their extreme types. You get this with dickhead vegans, dickhead trans people, dickhead animal rights activists etc

But on those feminists complaining about this:
The last Ghostbusters would have been just as shit if the women were men in the film.
I know there was a small few people who complained about the film because there were women as the lead roles.
But from the very first teaser, it looked awful MEN or WOMEN.

It's only natural that they would want to get away from everything the last film was.

By feminists I assume we actually mean bullshit white knight men posing as feminists .

Everyone outside of shill critics who’s seen the reboot knows that was a steaming pile.

Now let’s get George Lucas to reboot the sequel trilogy with Garrett Edwards in the director chair.

Can we kickstart a way to buy Star Wars back from the rat?

There will probably be at least one female Ghostbuster in this, I'm sure, it just won't be all female nor make that the crux of the damn movie.

And aren't these people going to feel like idiots when this movie both has a female 'buster and is a far better movie than GB 2016.

Honestly, the worst aspect of the 2016 atrocity was the fact that it was mostly ad-libbed. If this thing has, y'know, a script, it's already 100% better by default.

As long it's a good movie I don't really care whose in it. Hopefully a cameo from the main characters from original.

But both movies had one of the best female lead back then. Or are Alien fans considered male too? Also the secretary was cool too and the villain in the first movie was a woman.

I would like if they somehow acknowledged the existence of the 2016 movie in this one.
Like, maybe have them open up a portal to another universe, looking at the female Ghostbusters through the portal, the 2016 busters seeing them and going "wh- what?" and the new Ghostbusters saying "wow, wrong timeline" and closing the portal.

I don't really get the hate the 2016 movie got. Sure, the trailer was abysmal. It was awful and I was already annoyed by McCarthy and the black lady, but when I saw the actual movie I learned they had put the most annoying moments in the trailer. The black lady was waaaayyy less "sassy" and McCarthy was waaaaayyy less, well, "McCarthy" in the movie. In fact I found the female Egon be the most annoying of them all. Hemsworth was funny - actually funnier than the women too. I didn't get bored with the film. It wasn't anything special but it wasn't bad either.

Would love to see the studio recognizing the existence of that movie. Like, really owning it up.

Honestly, this is mostly anecdotal but I'm sure many others could attest the same but most of the women I know who were into nerdy shit loved the OG Ghostbusters and didn't like the 2016 version. It seems like most normie chicks who aren't into sci-fi couldn't give two shits about Ghostbusters regardless if it's all dudes or women.

I'm not speaking for everyone but I think there's a bit of a disconnect between what Hollywood and liberal women's websites think women want and what they actually want.

I mean there's a reason why the Pitch Perfect series made billions of dollars and it sure as shit wasn't from men watching it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

totally agree.

it's amazing how dumbed down and pandering the movie is. the ghost with boobs? Chris Hemsworth as a certified idiot? it is like it was written by a man who thinks women are idiots who need to be talked down to.

Dana Barrett & Janine Melnitz were amazing characters and both were huge parts of the first movies. but no we gotta pretend like it's always been this boy's club no girls allowed, just so our lame movie looks like it is doing something interesting.

it's this history rewriting bullshit all over again. i'm so sick of it.

I picture the plot as being about a few stranger things-esque kids discovering some big ghost event and they seek out RAY who is living as a recluse on his family farm. Winston comes in at the middle, and a cameo from Peter at the end. Ray will be the original ghostbuster that gets the most screen time, in a role much like Harrison Ford's in The Force Awakens. (he will be along for the adventure, not just an extended cameo). I wished that teaser trailer show ray with his face all covered in soot and his hair standing on end saying something like "well, at least it fires". (referring to the proton pack) The movie will be like Ghostbusters 1 crossed with It and Stranger Things.

Queston is, how do you give back to the fans while doing something fresh and new with the franchise? The 2009 Ghostbusters game already did that by bringing back the original cast and giving us the 3rd movie we've always wanted. Jason Reitman has his hands full if he hopes to top that.

Perhaps if he goes back to the core then maybe he's in a good place to start. And what's Ghostbusters really? It's a horror film about 4 blue collar guys fighting the paranormal with a bit of comedy thrown in. Some bits of the first movie are really goddamn scary so as to set the mood and what the stakes are. And what comedy is there is actually pretty low key and clever delivered by these comedians at the peak of their talents.

I'll admit to not seeing the 2016 reboot but judging from the RedLetterMedia review the fillmmakers ignored everything great about the first film and just made a screwball comedy with the Ghostbusters name on it. The ghosts in question are no longer frightening but instead are part of the gag. And these 4 female leads aren't given a script to best use their comedic talents but are forced to adlib in very unfunny ways. This wasn't a film but a marketing tool. And shame on Sony for using whatever faux outrage there was to try and make it a hit.

I wish Jason Reitman all the luck in the world though. If he can stay true to the series roots and ignore the SJW outrage that's sure to follow, maybe he can pull this off.

The most important part is to give the old cast the respect it deserves. You can even do it like the kids are learning from their parents how to catch ghosts.

in 2016 everything out of the old one was ridiculed. The old cast were presented as real assholes,. They made fun of the fans and the óld Ghostbusters logo was not only the final "boss" but they also shot them right into the dick.

I have NEVER seen a reboot or whatever this was being so disrespectful to the original.

It should be not that difficult to make a great sequel by respecting the old movie and the cast. And the teaser alone showed this.

It ended up MORE sexist than anything in the original movie as well. And the perfect example of that is Janine.
Yes, she was a comedic relief, yes she was eccentric.
But both of these things worked and made her exceptionally funny and memorable.
What she never was, was a dumb piece of ass for the audience to oogle at.

Yet, thats exactly what we got with Hemsworths charachter in the 2016 movie. It's like the entire movie staff never even watched the originals and instead went for prejudice.

I used to scoff at the notion that there was an SJW conspiracy to wreck our childhood fandoms.

But after Star Wars, Marvel's comic division, Disney and now Ghostbusters, it's really clear there's a concerted effort to push an agenda of social justice whether people like it or not. Eventually Hollywood will realise that this socially conscious audience they keep trying to attract will not spend the money for this garbage. People are drawn to good stories and characters, no matter what color or gender they are.

The original movie worked because the main cast could be put in any movie and it would of been funny regardless of ghosts...the remake was a shitty horrible attempt where the cast never really felt in tune and the only good part was actually chris hemsworth
i hope the new movie concentrates more on the chemistry of the main cast instead of wonton jokes .......
this sort of chemistry you can sit and watch for hours

As someone who really enjoyed the first 2 Ghosbuster movies when they came out I really dont give a fuck about a new one or the franchise in general.

The originals worked because the special effects were fairly new and they got the cast together at the right time. The CG will be too good as well, taking away the campiness of it.

Lets ask ourselves, which ghostbuster will be in the han solo in force awakens esque role? Peter, Ray, or Winston? I bet it will be Ray.

The main cast was the movie.

Without the main cast the movie could just simple be something completely different like you had with the chick flick.

This next movie is going to bomb just as hard
