Since they're going for the most well known characters usually it's probably either Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui or Haohmaru.

Bogard or Haohmaru. Mai is probably a bit too sexy for Nintendo. Haohmaru would make sense, since the new Samurai Showdown game is on Switch, too.

Metal Slug is still as great as it's always been
The old KoF games prior to 2000 are still awesome
Garou: MotW to this day is great and impressive
KoF XIII still has some of the best sprites and backgrounds I've ever seen on a FG
Arcades were already dead in my teens, but I played lots of SNK games on consoles anyways. They were never meh quality.

If anything then I'd say they were pretty bad last generation. KOF 14 and the new SS are really good. I hope they are going to make a new Metal Slug. I'd like to see what they would do with it.

Taito is owned by Square-Enix and the only connection you can make is SNK tried to sue SE for Hi-Score Girls use of KoF.

DLC characters have to be known to the masses, or they'd sell like shit
And I think she's unknown to 90% of the Smash players

It's either Terry ( not so known too, but the most known SNK one for sure, with the metal slug guys) or the metal slug characters

If Sakurai can't figure out a way to make Bomber Man into a character what makes you think he would give the bubble lizards a chance? They should be easy to make assist trophies however.

Bomberman, Shovel Knight, Waluigi, and many others are a terrible waste as a DLC
Gray Fox too could have been a funny character to use

Agreed on Shovel Knight and Waluigi but Bomberman absolutely deserves a spot. Tons of moveset possibilities, his stage could be nuts with the sudden death and revive mechanics and Hudson absolutely deserves proper representation. Hell, one could possibly make the argument that Smash wouldnt even exist without Bomberman's brand of 4 player free for all shenanigans.

Also, Bomberman is too much of an icon for videogames, I consider it on par with what Sonic, Mario and Pacman means
Is as popular as Pacman, even today ( with this I mean less than Mario, Snake, but more than basically everyone else)

But Smash is sadly notorious for wasting potential
Shantae, the characters I put in the previous post, the samurai guy who was discarded, Takamaru, and Mach Rider who could both make a great revival for long lost characters
Captain Toad, Boo, King Boo, Toad, Sylux
Also on the pokémon department, they could vary a lot, just put away every pokémon playable now apart from Pikachu, and substitute Greninja, Mewtwo, Pichu, pokémon trainer, Jigglypuff with whole new units

I'd change one of them picked at random for every shitty Fire Emblem useless dlc
