Original trilogy, despecialized, this is important.
I cannot emphasise this enough. Watch the OT despecialized, see how it goes, then maybe the prequels. Beware though, as much as some "fans" love them they're pretty boring dull movies. Then watch the ST just so you can go and watch The Rise of Skywalker at the old ciné together.

Just watch the movies like any normal person would.

I don't know how normal people see Star Wars. I Imagine them thinking "oh black evil dude saying edgy stuff, light swords going wiiing wiiing zooom, so retarded, so stupid" and makes me hate them a lot.

Fuck normies.

Release order.

For anything, ever (except maybe Yakuza).
This.

Any franchise, ALWAYS release order (ie the intended order). By watching it in chronological order you ruin "I am your father" and a bunch of other jokes/references that you'd only understand by watching them in release order. Eg Obi-Wan saying "Why do I get the feeling you'll be the death of me one day"?

Original trilogy.

prequels.

Then start the good shit with Clone Wars in Chronological order. After that if she isn't hooked it's lost. I got hooked on this franchise with Clone Wars.

Old movies from the 70s and 80s.

Just make sure to tell her it's cheesy with some plastic budget models.

Most of these movies are cookie cutter anyway, so it probably comes down to style/budget.

If she won't mind sci-fi with goofy costumes and ewoks, go with older movies. If she likes modern gritty realistic sci-fi flicks, the recent SW movies are better for that.

How do Star Wars nerds do it? How the fuck do they even get to have a GF? Serious question, bois.

Don’t worry too much. This is probably OP’s girlfriend.

1) Develop better taste and recognize the very first Star Wars is kino
2) PM me if you want and I'll get you the Despecialized trilogy + two separate 35mm scans of the first film + a 35mm scan of Return of the Jedi. Don't touch those special editions.

Start with Star Wars.
Then Empire.
ROTJ.

That is all.

I'd just go with release order.
I agree that A New Hope isn't that exciting by today's standards, but still, if you start with Empire Strikes Back she might have a lot of questions during the film.
4 > 5 > 6 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 7 > 8 > 9
Rogue One > Solo

Then if she happens to really dig it, try the Clone Wars series.

I had one of my students, a 56 year old stay at home mom, watch them. She had vague memories of watching the OT back in the 1980s in S Korea.

Despite my advice to watch in release order, she didn't listen to me and ended up not liking the OT as much. She said the CGI looked bad.

At the time, TLJ was in theaters and I showed her a webclam clip of Luke tossing the lightsaber. It took me awhile to convince her that it was real. She thought it was a blooper or fan edit. That's how awful that scene was. It just felt weird to her after watching the end of TFA that the cliffhanger would lead to that.

Also, watching the PT first makes lightsaber moments in the OT not as special, makes hearing the imperial march for the first time anticlimatic, lessens the impact of the Luke Skywalker/The Force theme in the ot because it was used so much in the PT.

A lot of the magic of the OT was how few Jedi there were and imagining how cool it would be like if there were a bunch of Jedi around, learning what the force is and imagining what kind of cool things one could do with the force.

My gf and I watched Rogue One in theaters. she thought it was just mediocre because all the easter eggs and callbacks to ANH went way over her head. She didn't realize Tarkin was CGI because she didn't know who he was. She thought the characters were absolutely dull and lacking in charisma.

Then I showed her TFA, she was surprised at how much she liked it. Since she didn't see ANH it felt original to her. She thought "Wow everything looks so much cooler" referring to the updated designs of the Stormtroopers, spaceships, tie fighters, x-wings, retro 1970s tech, etc. She also loved the Rey character in the first act of the film because she thought the character was very charismatic and likable. She'd probably hate Rey in TLJ because she has a good eye for charisma, ie - she watched Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, then watched Walking Dead after. She told me she was surprised that Shane (Jon Bernthal) was not nearly as charismatic as he was in DD season 2 and commented "I think the actor got a lot better with experience"

I never got to showing her the OT, she didn't wanna watch it. She generally wasn't ever into sci-fi. She far preferred Game of Thrones despite it being too violent for her.

My wife had never seen them before we were married. This is the order we watched:

New Hope
Empire
Revenge of Jedi
Phantom Menace
Attack of Clones
Revenge of Sith

The prequels aren’t worth missing out on the Vader revelation in Empire.

We actually watched my THX VHS copies of the OT, the last version before George messed them up. Download the despecialized versions.

Han shot first.

Release order is the best for any series. Prequel entries are still made with the assumption that people have seen the originals.

That said, the modular nature of this series means u can probably jump in anywhere and it’ll be fine

you can't put a price on sparks
Release order or not at all

Also, somehow not even knowing what a lightsaber was up until “you showed her” is kind of weird. It’s appeared across more than just Star Wars. Gotta wonder what kind of rock you found this girl under lol

Show her the original trilogy then if she asks for the rest gaslight her into believing that there are no other movies, brainwashing could work too. That's the only way she could like the Star Wars franchise if she's has any taste. You're welcome.

She's from an asian country that hasn't been very "in touch" with western culture. She knows what Star Wars is and how "big" and "impactfull" it was but she never heard what "The Force" was or didn't know that we call "Lightsabers" to the swords of light used to fight in star wars. Nor what a Jedi is...what's a deathstar and etc.

Original trilogy. Ignoring the drama of the prequels, the originals are simply much better movies. I recently watched them with my young nephews and niece and the loved them.

Also, even though A New Hope is slow, it's a good way to ease in. Maybe by the time you get to Return, the long lipped cabaret singer won't make her roll her eyes all the way out of the room.

The Machete order is the way to go:

Episode 4
Episode 5
(Leave it on the cliffhanger and then jump to prequels to give a flashback of all the drama between Obiwan and Anakin- plus it preserves the Vader reveal)
Episode 1
Episode 2
Episode 3
Episode 6
Episode 7
Rogue One

There are no other Star Wars movies so you should be good after RO.

NGL I didn't know much about star wars so I watched it 1-6. I didn't know who Vader was, but had a fucking co worker spoil it for me the night I was meant to watch that movie :pie_eyeroll: I get why everyone would say release order but...like....story wise why would you start in the middle? Idk that's just my input

good luck op
