Halo Reach PC Insider Flighting Beta Phase has been launched, official 4K/60fps video showcase released

Microsoft and 343 Industries have announced that the first insider flighting beta phase for the first Halo game that will be released on the PC via the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Halo Reach, has been launched. In order to celebrate this announcement, the teams have also released a new official video from the PC version of Halo Reach that you can find below.

This latest official video sports 17 minutes of gameplay footage, showcasing the Halo: Reach campaign mission “Tip of the Spear” running on the PC in 4K resolution with 60fps.

As 343 Industries noted, this is just the beginning and this initial flight is very small. In other words, don’t be disappointed if you have not received any email invite yet as new flights will be commenced at a later date.

The first MCC PC flight is an updated version of the build 343 Industries brought to E3 earlier this month which includes the Halo: Reach campaign mission “Tip of the Spear” and nothing more.

The primary goal of this first flight is to help the team validate the process and pipelines to get a build out to Insiders on Steam at a larger scale. A secondary goal will be to get player feedback on the current state of mouse and keyboard controls and how the game “feels” on PC.

So now my thoughts. Bit disappointing. I know it's an old game and their primary objective is just to get it on Steam so PC players can play it, but it is showing its age now. The textures are so low-res that 4K doesn't really bring anything to the table except crisper text on the HUD. Still, I'd rather play in 4K than 720p. The LOD pop-in really grates, too. To see the shrubbery appearing before your eyes, eek.

what do you expect? native 4K textures everywhere? Well, you should be disappointed by any PS4 Pro game then, because almost nothing is native 4K lol

I'm just griping because it's not a remaster. It wouldn't have been my choice to make it just a port. I'd want the game to get some extra love with texture improvements at the minimum. And the modding community will do that work for free. (Which is maybe why Microsoft and its teams aren't bothering.)

You also have to remember it’s a super old engine. They can only do so much. For what it is, it looks decent. And, I’m glad PC gamers get to enjoy this finally!

I don't know anything about coding but when you see old games getting user-created texture enhancements, like Mass Effect 2, I just presumed it could be done to any game.

I’m sure the modders will have a field day with this game when it comes out. For example, the texture mods for Witcher 3 on PC are amazing.

The main selling points are M&K controls and high framerates. Resolution is a big plus but it does make problems of older games more visible.

Why are people complaining about the graphics? The only next gen upgrade in the collection was for 2. It's gonna be a couple of years before they get to a Reach remaster if they ever plan on doing it since a 3 remaster still needs to happen first. Who knows if that will even happen since they missed the 10 year mark. See you in 2027 maybe? Actually that does sound pretty good for a next next gen system launch title.

Um it's a PC port of a Halo game for $10. Why go crazy remastering the title?

The intention is to get people playing, thinking and talking about Halo so it will be a big deal when the actual shiny new Halo comes out.

Remastering it would demand more than a $10 price, and take away from the marginal improvement when Infinite drops.

Eh, if you’ve ever tried modding HaloCE you will see it’s possible, but also a pain in the ass. Each map has its own asset pack that has all the textures and modes for that map. This includes all armor and what not. It’s not really all that modular.

Men this looks rough
It looks exactly like it used to, but in 4k

Man the auto-exposure control for the HDR here is all out of whack compared to the original game. Looks really bad.
Hope they can improve the draw distances and the UI elements by release. (Not that I liked Reach much anyway. Bungie made sure to really make it in a way that would sour the franchise for those that had spent the previous decade following the lore.)

Reminds me of EDF4.1 on PC, at 4k the auto-exposure is so broken that it gives me a headache so I have to play at a lower resolution so when in bright areas it's not constantly flickering back and forth between normal and super bright constantly.

The frame rate is the big deal here. OG Reach hardly hit 30fps consistently (at a sub 720p resolution to boot.)

Even for a game released in 2010 the graphics are shit. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has way better graphics and it came out the same year.

Jeez, I wonder which game had a larger budget, marketing, and fanbase.

**EDIT**

and Battlefield 3 only came out a year later.

Art style matters. Bad company 2 didn't age nearly as well. Realistic art styles from the 360 gen look like dookie today but to each his own.

There is such a thing as a subjective interpretation of things people. Just because something looks good to you doesn't mean it looks good to someone else.

There's no point in debating about these sort of things, geez.

Ahh...The feels. Firefight was great on Reach. The satisfaction of a well placed rocket or grenade on a group of Covenant as they exit a drop ship was great.

When is it going to release though? They promised to have all mcc on PC by the end of the year, but that isn't happening.

i'm sure they said a while back that they wouldn't be able to have them all out by this year now. they might get one game out this year who knows but we're nearly in november now so yeah there's no chance all them are gonna be out by the end of the year.

When did they say that? They said it would be done this year and I remember no update.

I'm actually really disappointed with this. Anyone know where to find this delay? Unless they buried it in a long meandering interview focused on diversity using doublespeak.

I feel it's really more likely they just made a hollow promise and then hoped everyone would forget about it so they don't have to say anything that would make them uncomfortable.

The fuck is this thread become in a heartbeat (at the beginning at least)?

Haters crawling out of their 10-year-old holes to bash Halo.

If you needed to know if Halo is still relevant, there you go.

Been waiting years for Halo on PC, so i can wait a bit longer. I'd rather the games launched right, rather than have a similar situation to MCC when it launched on Xbox.

Played some of the first level of Reach tonight. Buttery smooth, man it's been so long since I've played a Halo game. I just couldn't get very far in 4 it was so bad to me...But 1-3, ODST and Reach are amazing. The sound is a bit muddled or something though. Guns sound super quiet/weak

They NEVER said it was all going to be out this year.

Not once.

Not even said in a way that could make you think that.

Lmfao.

Game should be free (or at nominal cost) for owners of the xbox version to compensate for the legendary fuck up that was the OG release

This slow roll of the pc flighting has been frustrating as well, with constant updates from community managers to be 'on the lookout' for invites with reminders to keep our information updated so they can contact us.

It's a small percentage that have actually been able to get in.

I get it, they're afraid of a repeat performance. But for those paying attention, the hype train has been slowly building for months and months with very little they've actually delivered to most people.

If Reach is awesome on pc, I will of course buy it but dont act like 343 has somehow not screwed this up every goddamned step of the way

If you're not going to use it, I'd love to. PM me the code if you're feeling generous please
Sure just use a time machine to go back a few weeks.

"Please join our Social Matchmaking play session on Saturday, October 5th, during the 5PM – 9PM PT window."
"The Halo: Reach Xbox One multiplayer flight will run through Wednesday, October 9."

If not for that I would have given you something.

My bad. I remember they had said the Xbox One X version was a little behind and they wouldn't be able to flight it as frequently/long. I figured they'd ironed it all out and flights going forward would be open to both (like the one going on now, their 'biggest, most inclusive one yet' which still isn't available to a huge percentage of people trying to get in, despite them posting dev diaries about how well it's going)

I think Halo needs a different studio altogether. 343 has failed totally and fully.

I will praise the lord if they can just port one game right.

I am very close to agreeing with this. I think there are some redeeming qualities of both halo 4 and 5 (I'm one of the few that won't say H4 multiplayer was,t totally irredeemable--big team gametypes actually played pretty well, although, they did butcher the competitive 4v4 aspect of the game).

5 went totally the opposite direction, and the game was designed with WAAAY too much emphasis/feedback on what a handful of pro gamers and youtubers decided were good ideas. Not to mention aspects of both games looked/felt unfinished (looking at you Halo 5 on based Xbox One with hilariously bad textures/resolution).

But you're right, they can't seem to have ANYTHING go off without major hitches. The release of MCC should have been a slam dunk, a celebration and rekindling of all things Halo. Same goes for Reach and MCC PC. And it may still be. But all signs point toward it being another slow moving trainwreck.

I will, of course, still play it, as a diehard (albeit slightly lapsed) Halo fan.

Campaign wise both 4 and 5 completly drop the ball. The new enemies are not fun at all to fight in 4. Some improvements were made in 5. But still the classic enemies are better. Then there is the boring repeating boss fight.

Multi-player wise 4 is actually really fun. But it is horribly balanced so it can't be taken very serious. Some pretty basic things they could have changed that they just never did. Normal settings are awful but without the killstreaks it's fun. Maps aren't bad with a few standouts.

I can see why people enjoy 5. The gameplay is different but not bad. At launch though the maps were horrible. Not one even decent nevermknd good map. For me that made it unplayable.
