Next-gen Racing Graphics Face-off | (Next-gen means current-gen)

driveclub was always one of the most impressive looking racers
Disagree there, there are points where driveclub looks amazing and there are points where driveclub looks awful. There are much better looking racing games on both systems now. Driveclub was good at the time

How can you say that that is the best looking game while it looks like that and all the detail is missing compared to Forza Horizon 4 wich is a open world game wich makes it even more impressive. And those are just in sunny normal day lighting

Because those are cherrypicked static shots of the less impressive moments of the game. Again: lowest lows on the lowest hardware.
The cherrypicked good stuff looks better to me than FH4, despite the vast time and hardware advantages of FH4. And yeah, yeah, "low res gifs" whatever, I'm talking lighting, materials/shaders, effects, the overall feel in motion, ... not scrutinizing a static shot to death:

I haven't seen these little realistic details like droplets running on the surfaces in other games:

Not just the sense of speed, but motion in cockpit, the detailed cockpits with realistic materials:

And not yet even talking about the weather, which is still the best, 5 years later.

I mean, look at this. 2018 FH4 at 4K, on one of the signature races:

Yes, sharpest 4K resolution is great but the game itself in cockpit view and the effects look like ass. It looks horribly flat and "videogamey" in comparision.

Now, you can cherrypick another dozen bad shots and put those against a dozen PC FH4 ones, but if you don't capture amazing moments like the ones above it's not because the game doesn't have them in it, and you simply prefer to be exclusively centered on cherrypicking only the best of FH4.

If the game looks really good, there is no need to hide this beauty in tiny compressed gifs with hardly visible details, materials structure, assets quality.
There's plenty of videos posted too that show Driveclub's graphics

This could almost pass as a PS5 game if the resolution was 4K

You know they had this discussion like a million times here right?

It's the light engine that makes it look so good. And that weather... ooof

compressed youtube vids can't convey the truly beauty of games. png screenshots do it better, but for some reason almost no one want to post DC gameplay screenshots.
I can do this for one time...

Yes, the game looks good in motion...lighting is amazing(except the night, where the rear light's bloom looks really aweful) but you can notice the interesting fact - these 1080p photos look pretty close to tiny gif in terms of details and image quality(low quality blur, badly detailed asphalt because of low anisotropy, overall dirty look while watching these shot on fullscreen).

Photomode is another story. It has really impressive visual quality while watching this at fullscreen(that's how I prefer to play games,). I easilly can believe these shoots are from nextgen launch title. Sadly, it is just photomode and the real gameplay looks uncomparable worse. "Lighting bla bla" The lighting is nothing without details. No one want to have 20/200 vision and excuse himself "I can see lighting, though". We all want to see images sharply and with no render defects. I really satisfy while watching photo mode shots because I can see tiny motionblur fibers. In gameplay it looks just like the dirt on my screen. And same is actual for other aspects of DC graphics. Lightings is the only one part of the visual. shape, assets, details are another part.

And again tons of small low rez gifs with all of them smeared with motion blur wich 10 of them contain rain as usual and a compressed Forza video from motogamestv. And half of those gis are from pre release footage from the dev with the clouds.
And then there's the usual cherrypicked static photomode shots Forza fans love so much.

Of course HDR would be amazing too. Thinking some good implementation like GTS one (sorry, but Forza's HDR is mediocre at best) would put the game even on another level.
But even without HDR, its light engine is so realistic it still can look bonkers:

Lol i haven't posted photomode shots when i compared what are you on. And the photomode in DC upgrades the graphics in every way possible, unlike FH4 photomode where you can add just dof and supersample with motion blur if you want. But nice try, only screenshots you post are from photomode and pre release footage wich says enough. And lol that first screenshot is from Project Cars :messenger_tears_of_joy:. Instead of just spamming with gifs and photomode pictures and overlooking other games pcitures, just show me some real gameplay pictures. But hey then it wouldn't look good right? And saying this is how it would look on pc is just the same as saying zebras would look like giraffes if they had long necks. Lighting is one of the most important parts of visuals though 🤷‍♂️ if you have flat lighting then the visuals fall apart

And I hugely disagree about a YouTube video not being able to convey the beauty in a game. Did you watch the video? Even compressed it looks amazing

Also check the comments while you're at it. Everyone can't be wrong about the graphics

I also find it funny whenever someone calls Forza gamey looking, they literally made it as close as possible to the real thing wich some of you call fake. And since you guys like gifs to "show the real lighting" here you go, and again is real life not real enough?

Yep. Lighting is important, but it is only part of all visual we see. We all see the rays reflected from the objects. So? rays and optical effects are determened as lighting. Assets, materials, geometry are determened as objects. And visibility of assets, its quality scales with resolution very well(which you can sure by looking at photomode shots).

Ok, maybe it wasn't you and were the other guys that have been posting FH4 shots here from photomode with DOF and supersampled motion blur. And maybe the web I took the shots from was wrong labeling that one image as Driveclub's and its not (it's not the best either). No problem.

Now, you can cherrypick another dozen bad shots

I wonder why I saw your post coming... :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Again, all cherrypicked shots with the worst possible lighting you could set.

This is how FH4 plays:

And even forget about the "fancy particles"... does reducing this to gif resolution and quality makes it more amazing? more similar in realism to these Driveclub ones? 🤔

If you don't capture amazing moments like these ones or the others in my previous post it's not because the game doesn't have them in it, but because you simply prefer to be exclusively cherrypicking only the best from FH4 and the worst from Driveclub.

I haven't even played a lot of Driveclub and have found a lot of great moments like these gifs and videos. I have played a lot more FH4, and even being on PC and even on 3D I haven't found such jawdropping moments like those above.

I've seen your FH4 shots here and at the other general screenshot thread, and they look great. But I wonder, what's really the best you can take from Driveclub? because clearly that's not what you've been posting here...

But all of you spammed the shit out of this thread and the discussion kept going :messenger_tears_of_joy:. But right now im gonna sleep (5h before waking up for work). Cool. I don't think I have even half of your hours in the game.
I honestly would love for you to capture some clips (not just screenshots) where you can be comfortably saying "these are the best quality moments/shots I can take out of this game".

What engine was drive club using?

I ask as codemasters employ the developers nowadays I think, I'm curious if they could repeat the quality of the graphics on the ego engine and with the next generation of console and hopefully pc version, it would be interesting to see proper shadows, more than 30fps etc to see if the game could be the absolute best looking driving game.

It's the general consensus that DC is the best looking racer this generation. I didn't even know this was really disputed until I came to this thread

That hasn't been the general consensus for years now. DC was a great looking game for what it was, but it's limitations are many, and well known.

Driveclub certainly has it's moments. In a close race in the rain, and that lightning cracks in the distance... The chaotic environment with hectic racing through a narrowed section of the track... It creates an environment at times that's tough to beat.

The issue when it comes to this debate however, is that those moments are in only very very specific portions of the game. While it does its best, the framerate being only 30 is noticeable. While the rain effects are excellent... They're hiding and diffusing shortfalls elsewhere. (There's a reason DC fans post 99% of videos in the rain as proof.)

Comparing DC to a game like FH4 really isn't fair. FH4 had a bigger and more established dev team. It's on a far larger scale. On a game like DC, everything a certain distance from the track is merely a canvas that's been painted. A 2D portrait that uses simple effects to create a rotation effect as you move past it. FH4 isnt doing that, because you actually have to be able to drive there, so it all has to be 3D, with draw distance taken into account as you approach it.

While it's not really fair to compare more recent games to DC, to suggest that DC looks better, or is more graphically impressive is bonkers. It's good for what it is, but let's come back to reality for a bit... It's an arcade racer, with few tracks, few cars, 30 fps, at a lower resolution, and average effects outside of rainy conditions.

I was going to ask if Driveclub has Forza Horizon 4’s volumetric occlusion where a car can cast color onto a nearby building. But what would be the point? You never get that close to buildings in DC.

“This is a volumetric occlusion technique that lets a car cast its shade of colour onto nearby buildings. There's a subtle bounce effect as you drive close to objects, and that applies regardless of machine.”

Every game has limitations but the overall package of Driveclub hasn't been surpassed yet

The best lighting
The most detailed cars at 260,000 polys and many materials
The best weather
The best visual damage using a shader procedural damage system

Also distant landscapes are fully modeled, not painted on

Check out the 1st race in this video, there's no rain and it looks better than any racer out there

That is just your opinion, to me GTS looks way more natural and realistic thanks to his lighting, material shaders and the way how they reflect the light . FH maybe it can look better on a static image thanks to the more sharper image since it is running on a more powerful hardware (on xbox one x it is locked to 30fps at 4k mode) but that's it
I can honestly tell you it has nothing to do with hardware. Before my OG Xbox died I was incredibly impressed with how it looked. I still can't believe it ran looking like that.

One thing I have noticed is that when comparing Forza Horizon, only the stock version is shown vs DC. Never fortune island or storm island, or Hot wheels or Lego.

But its always DC with its weather update and bikes update etc.

The Hot wheels pack looks ridiculous visually and that was FH3. The lego pack
in FH4 with the amount of bricks and physics being thrown around is incredible.

This Kraken race is from Fortune Island. It's not a cherrypicked bad moment of FH4, it's a signature race, and that cockpit view looks a lot less realistic than Driveclub's.
The outside view looks better but not comparable in realism to the Driveclub moments below. Driveclub has its shortcomings in resolution, AA, LOD, etc. but lighting and effects wise looks better. Reducing the FH4 video to similar resolution of those gifs doesn't make it look any better.

This is how FH4 plays:

There's no need for exaggeration. Driveclub's rain, storms and snow are clearly still the better 5 years later, and that's why there are so many videos with them. But it's not like those are the only impressive moments you can see in Driveclub.
None of these are rain/snow, and still look amazing:

Then yes, I agree it has its limitations, its shortcoming from being a 2014 title on a 1.8Tflops base PS4, but when the game shows it's better face it still can show the better moments you can see/play on a racer.
I have played a lot more FH4 on a top PC than Driveclub on a PS4 and I haven't found such jawdropping moments as those above, which I found many.

Yeah lets post the same gifs again and again....on the same freakin page lol.

There's a lot totally new, not the same. The ones that are the same you already have on your cache, but anyway I put them all inside a Spoiler.

The same "Driveclub only has good rain" "just some fancy particles" "99% of videos/images are rain" arguments keep coming up so...

The outside view looks better but not comparable in realism to the Driveclub moments below. Driveclub has its shortcomings in resolution, AA, LOD, etc. but lighting and effects wise looks better. Reducing the FH4 video to similar resolution of those gifs doesn't make it look any better.

Bro, what have you done! You've killed the Driveclub only looks good during the rain narrative 😄

That particular video has a completely overcast sky. No sun at all. And you wonder why it looks a little flat? That’s just what happens to lighting when you remove all point sources. It's totally a cherry pick.

Be sure to check out the dynamic shadows being cast by fences, etc...

That particular video is a full main race of Fortune Island, not some cherrypicked static shot. And it looks a lot less realistic than the Driveclub's clips of similar overcast weather:

If you can't honestly say that these look a LOT more realistic than the FH4 video...

I guess Driveclub looking much better has a lot to do with the clouds system being volumetric and calculating light properly, and despite being just SDR, having a high range of tonemapping adaptation.

Honestly, even I've seen better videos of FH4, like this one:

and still think the best moments of Driveclub are a lot more realistic than this, despite 5K whatever...

One thing which I think Forza Horizon could definitely learn from Driveclub is sound, it's simply amazing. And weather, but to me it seems pretty overdone, but meh, better than what is in FH for sure.

GTS (possibly even GT6 with its newer cars) and Forza have both surpassed this. IIRC Forza and GT's full-res models (pre-tessellation in GTS' case) are around 500,000.
Yes, older games without tessellation have, but newer Forza games have less poly counts than 260K
