Putting aside Github leak (which was spot on for XSX, Renoir and M100), MS seems to be flexing muscles as far as power goes ever since December.
They announced XSX right infront of Mark Cerny on VGAs. The entire message since then has been "power power power".
They then showed massive die shot right before Sony's CES press conference, and just when you thought Sony will have PS meeting by the end of February, they post blog on XSX specs confirming 12TF of RDNA2.
They gone so far to put dictionary definition for TF on their official twitter.
To me, putting power and TFs in spotlight before your competitor announces its console + before pre orders start only means :
A) they are pretty sure they have higher TF number
B) they are idiots and they can land flat on their face before gen even starts.
Therefore, going by MS message and Sony's silence, I am pretty sure AMDs deleted internal repo containing tests for XSX and PS5 are indeed correct (who would have thought it really?).
Pretty much says what need be said. MS and Sony are more in-the-know on each other's systems than we could ever hope to be, and the messaging from MS so far (and Sony's for that matter) can only really imply one thing.
My question now is how much of a gulf is there. If it's 1TF or less, then they are virtually identical in output and that'd be less than a 10% differential. That's part of the reason I've been speculating 11.04 as PS5's high end, but even that hinges on some other evidence surfacing. OTOH say that other evidence does surface but due to thermal concerns hits lower clocks, something like 10.4 would still be very powerful (and beat the pants off Stadia), but obviously a more notable gulf between 10.4 and 12.
If things hold as they are, we're
potentially looking at a pretty large gulf between the two (, but people should keep in mind that even in such a case you're still looking at a PS5 that outclasses Stadia, could potentially come in at $399 or $450, and could have RT somewhat better than XSX (if they go with PowerVR implementation which is possibly more efficient) and maybe the faster SSD. Tho tbf, those last two are based on rumors and, like those leaks, are missing their own context or going off older specifications.
No matter what happens in terms of specs I hope people can keep their tempers cool and heads on straight. But what am I kidding, it's gonna be a circus of epic proportions.
Retail Ps5 will be between 8.3 and 8.7 TF
That's 2x Ps4 Pro
36CU at 1800MHz is 8.3TF
That's a higher frequency than Xbox Series X will use.
I think that'd be bad. IF they had to downclock, better to turn on the full chip and set it to 1.7.
But that's an absolute worst-case and also would mean no upcoming Oberon steppings or revision pops up within the next two months showing a fuller picture of the chip and more CUs. Which I think is
still very likely to happen, tho admittedly I'm being very hopeful on that one moreso for the mental health of people who are going to lose their shit if a worst-case scenario actually ends up happening.
