Dolby responds to Sony's PS5 3D audio claims

isn't atmos proprietary ?

It's licensed tech. Sony's Tempest engine will never be. There is no valid reason for Sony to have wasted R&D on their custom 3D audio engine, they could have instead used that cash to improve the cooling system so the Playstation doesn't sound like a jet engine.

Opportunity costs, something Sony needs to learn and HARD. Microsoft seems to know how to pick battles, Sony doesn't. They're doing things out of pride rather than rationality.

i can hear the argument .
but as a whole company sony do that kind of R&D for other products, why not use it ?

Dolby supports more audio sources and they're the gold standard. I'd rather devs target Dolby Atmos. This is typical Sony/Apple bullshit putting in proprietary tech.

No this is Sony being Sony, you know one of the pioneers and innovators in bluray, console vr, etc. Just because Dolby is deep in it doesn't mean other companies should stay stagnant and can't do better. More competition and pushing innovation breeds new and better methods.

You know what the PS5’s cooling solution is and sounds like?

Money is always the bottom line.

Sony saw they could save a buck, so they did. Quality has nothing to do with it.

It's called business.

Where else will their 3D audio engine be used? Sony mobile phones are dead, Sony laptops dead. What?
You do know that Sony Music Entertainment exists right? Also you have no idea what their new tech brings, maybe they have new features that aren’t available on Dolby Atmos, or they want to compete with them. I guess you would have told them not to bother with Blu-ray either, I mean DVD was a thing. I really don’t understand what you’re crying about, this isn’t something Sony just threw together for the PS5 to avoid paying licensing fees. They are actually heavily invested in the Audio business.

With Sony's acquisition of AudioKinetic, company behind Wwise, Tempest 3D audio SDK will likely be integrated into that. Many studios utilize Wwise and injecting Tempest 3D audio for developers to play with is a no brainer.

Tempest Engine is a PS5 hardware feature, right? I wonder if the headset will connect/pair directly to PS5 or it will connect/pair to DS5?
I am really looking forward to PS5 teardown to be held soon enough, so we can learn more about the console ins and outs. I am guessing this will happen after The Last of US Part 2 is released or GoT in june.

Also the inventor of high priced Proprietary storage formats. With everyone good Sony does, they end up doing something dumb.

Hey since you've heard the ps5's cooling set up in action can you share a pic of the unit that you snapped? Or were you not able to grab one?

Seriously though what makes you think both options arent possible?

Why is it ok for Dolby to have proprietary tech but not Sony? 🤷‍♂️

Because xbox fanboys are so childish that they cant see tech as tech, they HAVE TO bash anything related to Sony to feel like they won some imaginary battle

I see this Sony solution as wise move. They get what they want, can modify it and it is made for games, not for movies(mainly) like atmos

I have atmos setup and honestly it isnt anything special. But if Sony can offer real 3D audio with this, it is epic

Maybe dolby could too, but why the fuck Sony cant use their solution if they want?

Oh, I forgot! Because xbox uses dolby so it must "win" because of dipshits and their fragile egos

Mind telling us what the cooling solution is like on PS5 since you're in a position to make such claims?

Also, LOL What???

I'm personally happy that the XBox Series X supports Dolby Atmos. Dolby stands for the worldwide leading high quality audio technology.

Never heard something before of the 3D Tempest Engine, and I actually don't care, sorry :)
Way to encourage innovation!

Must admit I feel like a bit of a second class citizen to Sony at the moment audio wise. I've got a 5.1.2 Atmos Setup.

Sony are saying they are focusing on Headphones, then tv speakers and then finally those with surround sound systems.

Way to deprioritise those that care about immersive sound quality most lol.
