This Lockhart thing ain't it.
Well, I agree. I am not happy about this news obviously...

Report me if I continue to console war
4tf should be able to do about 1/2 the resolution of the PS5.

Pretty good idea considering PS5/XSX are rumoured to be $449/499

Considering
Air quotes, jokes and the likes aside, different uArch so you can't compare it though it's very close.
If Lockhart will see the light of day then it should be as cheap as possible, no SSD, just pure/entry 1080/60 machine.
Other consoles cost $449 - 499? then Lockhart should be -$200 of that, it's been good news from Microsoft's camp but I expect this won't go down well.

There's the PS5

Anyway I voted it's amazing - in the way it has so many people that have ZERO interest in buying an Xbox so concerned about it's existence.

I did not vote as I wont buy a lockart.

However, I do think a base and pro versions of consoles are a good idea for both MS and Sony.

I do not like Sonys one size fits all approach.

Lockart must have an SSD, otherwise some next gen games might not run on it if assets and textures are streamed.

If true, this is just a complete waste of a release. I guess some people will buy it, but this is not even next gen.

Games like The Orange Box came out on PC first and were ported to the weaker Xbox just fine. I don't see how all of a sudden that isn't possible anymore.

  1. We don't get as many PC exclusive games as we used to, especially not ones that target high end PC parts. Crysis was probably the last one we got.
  2. Half Life 2 originally released at a time when only the original Xbox and PS2 were available, it targeted higher end PC hardware at the time of release. It was later ported to next generation consoles that didn't exist at it's time of release. The next gen consoles it was ported to were in line with the requirements HL2 had at the time of its release.

Must is a big word and nothing a console must have, except a controller.
Microsoft has a bigger problem on their hands, current stock lying around all over the world and the price cuts puts them at a certain price.
It wouldn't be much of steal in the eyes of consumers if they can be an One X for cheaper, new or second hand - this console has to be as cheap and profitable as possible or it adds nothing.

"tech stuff that will define the next-generation"

*sees SSD listed*

*Sees no mention of Teraflops*

So is the lack of power gonna be made up by the cloud? Or just more if a 1080p focused machine?

I like that they're giving gamers options although I'm not so keen on them fragmenting things like this.

Having their 1st party games run on XB1, Lockhart, and Series X seems like it would limit the potential of more ambitious developers.
Having to wait a minimum of 2 years just to see any Series X exclusives confirms games will be limited to some extent.

You know this time the Cloud might be used to augment. When/if Xcloud gets sleds based on SEX (current are XboneS) it could be be used to stream games that otherwise wouldn’t run on Lockhart. Of course then you bring bandwidth and latency into the equation so it’s not a perfect replacement, but streaming a 1080 image and up scaling.... just might be ok.

Hopefully its got the same CPU, SSD and comparable RAM to Series X. Or its going to have unpleasant implications for third party and Xbox first party games.

Yea and probably no raytracing . I just hope the ssd stays the same as xsx
It should be able to do Ray Tracing at lower levels of course.

You mean no ray tracing at all.
It should be capable of RT.

Calling it: $399 Lockhart, $599 Xbox Series X, $499 PS5
This was my original estimate over a year ago but after hearing Phil talk I think it will be $500 XSX and $500 PS5 with LH hitting $300.

I didn't think they'd kill off the One X that quickly. Really leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
MS will fully support XB1X until at least 2021 but most likely 2022. The more subscribers on GP the better for the division. Leaving behind millions of people doesn't make sense especially since 99% of all games easily scale.

Meh, XSES doesn't sound as cool as XSEX.

But even without the naming mess a lot of people will be confused why they should get Lockhart instead of XONEX if the latter is the one with more teraflops.
IMO this will be the hardest thing for MS to communicate. People will look at XB1X and see 6TF's and then look at XSS and see 4TF's then think that XB1X is better.
IMO, best way to do it is say XSX is our Next Gen 4K UHD console, the most powerful console money can buy and XSS is our Next Gen HD console.

38% of ps5 resolution not 50%

4/10.3=0.38

Yea its a good idea if it has same ssd and cpu imo

XSS will have 33% of the TF's of XSX but only need to produce 25% of its pixels.
I think XSS will be fine for the same games at 1080P.

Lockhart rumors all stated 12GBs of Ram not 8.

Sony fans, there is your XBox to dump on!

Everybody loses!

But seriously, why are folks glossing over the reduced RT hardware? Yeah devs can “turn it off” for games developed around current gen hardware, but what do you get when you turn off RT on Minecraft RTX?

Unless some games aren’t compatible with Lockhart, the. this is going to severely limit the scope of RT next gen.

Smart business move and consumer friendly, but it’s disappointing to me that we likely won’t get a huge investment in RT next gen (or at least games built around path tracing).

Probably best to get 1X out of the store before lockhart is stocked.

MS, just cancel Lockhart. It's redundant. There's no genuine purpose for it. XSX and Xcloud are enough. If people want to get in on next-gen cheaply, literally just let them use Xcloud streaming on their One X/XBO or Samsung phone.

Just focus on XSX and price it right, because the more I hear about Lockhart (especially in light of the already great Xcloud and Gamepass services), the more I dislike it. The whole thing is feeling like a stopgap and a constant road bump to a smooth next-gen with XSX, Xcloud and Gamepass.

Hearing it could have critical next-gen features cut back just makes it sound even worst. Put that Lockhart production budget towards XSX, more software development or securing 3rd-party deals (or even a VR/AR headset). All of those would be better use of that Lockhart money, IMHO.

Game design will not be affected since the GPU is mostly used for graphics. It literally is toggling which graphics are enabled and which aren't. Gamplay on the other hand is more CPU heavy.

But that's the thing; GPU isn't just for graphics. Asynchronous compute will be a massive thing for next gen, arguably more than the SSDs IMHO, and while non-graphical features of games are very scalable these days, there's a point to where you scale down so much it becomes a completely different gaming experience.

Just my opinion, but the whole thing with Lockhart feels very 32X-ish. A potential long-term anchor solution for a short-term problem (recession and casuals not able or willing to jump in @$450/$500). It just feels redundant now thanks to stuff like Xcloud streaming.

Maybe the ONLY way I could see Lockhart being justified is IF it's a streaming device, perhaps they could get it to $199. In that case, I can see it being of some value and not have any big impacts on XSX. But you don't need 4TF for a streaming device IMO....not even for 4K60 I would assume.
