Wonder where PS4 will end it’s sales? 130-135 million? Anyway amazing gen for Sony.
It'll all be down to the PS5's price.

$400 and we'll probably see sales drop off quickly, especially will backwards compatibility. Even then, I'd still expect PS4 to at least manage another 5-10m, especially if the price comes down further.

$500 and the PS4 will continue to dominate the low end of the market and could start approaching PS2 numbers.

Has the PS4 even ever had a price cut? I remember the PS3's price was getting slashed like every 2 years but I can't even recall hearing about a PS4 price drop. Maybe when the Pro came out the base became cheaper?

I don't know, but it seems to only get a temporary one during the Black Friday season.

Only imbeciles care whether one product happens to be selling more than another or not.

What matters is whether a product is worth owning on its own merits, and with a games machine that ultimately means what games does it have that set it apart from the competition.

On that front, MS are probably in the best position they have been since 7th gen, but ultimately the proof will be a pudding.

Even should PS5 end up selling 10 times as many systems, if MS can come up with an exclusives library that makes owning an XSX worthwhile, then it scarcely matters.
I think indirectly it affects people. They care because sales mean more software support (games) and more niche hardware support (VR).

It's the same with anything. iOS gets a lot of app support due to its popularity Windows phone wasn't a bad platform but its apps were shit because the hardware sales weren't there.

This comment is just 🤦‍♂️. An imbecile is one that doesn't understand why ppl would care for sales. What a company does in the future and it's endeavors is directly tied to profit and how much they sell. Budgets are a real thing. Games and even dev teams get disbanded or canceled if a company doesn't sell well or a game tanks, these are facts. I want Sony to sell a trillion because that means thyll have enough profit to push more games I like and hardware. You sell little and companies go under.

People have preferences not just only based on fanboy unhealthy brand loyalty but because guess what? They genuinely enjoy the quality of or specific things a company offers.

That attach rate is great, also good to see that 66% is downloaded digitally

Insane results although the rise in digital sales in the last few months was obviously due to the pandemic and i don't expect it to continue (as much as it did these last months) once things get back to normal.

With results like that it's no wonder Sony is in no rush to enter next gen (unlike MS).

Do you think believe will go back to buying retail? I would think that once they've noticed how much easier it is to buy digitally they might keep doing that. Although there will always be the price difference.

Well i had to pay 70€ for the digital version os FFVIIR where if things were normal i would have bought it physical for 53€ . As crazy as it sounds physical is still a lot less expensive than digital (even on day 1 prices) and also requires less space on the Hard Drive than a full digital install so i think that the people who were buying physical before will continue to do so once things get back to normal.

Pure and only and based on nothing this gen speculation. You hear it? The sound of wind...

This kind of news puts the whole "something is wrong with sony and ps5, it can't be good" narrative in a different perspective. Although diehards will still hold on to their negative point of view. Sony is killing it and doesn't need the ps5 to step in and save the PlayStation brand.
The only issue Sony will face with PS5 is that they won't have enough units to all day one buyers no matter how many they produce.
I'm really waiting the preorders open to assegure one.

Y’all can talk about game pass all you want but the third party content there trumps ps now. When FF VII-FFXV is on there.... and there isn’t a single FF game on ps now?

66% of the buyers in 2019 dont care about that .0001% chance of having their license taken away for doing stupid shit.

I for one welcome our digital overlords.

If they don't share it, then it's not good enough to compare with Game Pass
Hold on now, this ain't a contest! Oh wait...

But serious, I feel gamepass is a really big part of the buissenes model of Xbox coming of one x to series x. They shout it from the roofs and practically giving away subs to build momentum. It's really nice...

Psnow is not even remotely marketed the same way as gamepass. Psnow seems more like a way of bringing backward compatibility to ps4. As of late they are releasing newer games on it but the main business model seems totally different. And totally logical that gamepass has more members.

I predicted the PS4 would sell more than the PS1 but less than the PS2. Considering that it looks like there will be quite a lot of software for the PS4 even after the PS5 releases (BC and all that), I'm starting to wonder if it can actually beat the PS2.

The numbers in OP lacks some quarters... it is around 1.3b software sales already (at least 100% over 1.2b).
So more one or two quarters will make it over PS2 software sales.

At that point it is 100% certain unless the world ends before it :D.

Very impressive numbers. PS4 is worthy of its success. It has an incredible library of games, it has probably been the best gen for me since the original PSX. Sony has great momentum and confidence now so I'm excited for the reveal of the PS5 in June.

It's crazy that these numbers are before 2 big new AAA games that will sell greatly
Coronavirus happened.

I saw this trend on GTS number of profiles that doubled and peaked at triple of what we have per day before the virus (7k to 15-20k).

People at home are increasing both the games sales and the digital ratio.
